The pilots loved it and its combat record is steller. The tomcat was designed as a fleet defence fighter. So of course its going to be more nimble. The only reason the f111 was tried in the navy was because some of the US gov were too tightass to develop 2 different aircraft.
Joint Strike Fighter was the name of the program to design a new fighter than can fulfill the roles of several other aircraft in the US air arsenal.
X-35 was the plane entered in by Lockheed Martin and competed and won against Boeing's X-32. The X-35 prototype was the basis for the F-35s Lightning II's being made today.
@MavZilLa09 I don't think it was designed to compete with the F-22... Keep in mind Chinese Military Doctrine is more about Asymmetric War than going head on to fight anybody. If anything, they'll design Anti-Air Missiles that can take down the Raptor, while designing fighters like the J-20 to be larger (larger engines to be faster, more weapons payload, and more fuel) to basically evade the F-22 and other air defenses and bomb the crap out of it's targets using its supersonic speed and stealth.

Sorry gman, first variable thrust nozzle was the British 'Flying Bedstead' demonstrated at Farnborough in 1970's which then led to the British Harrier VTOL which was bought by US.. Incidentally, Russian aircraft designs can equal, if not excel, US designs. Where they fall down is in their avionics - tho' their technology can't be that bad, it was Russian rockets that rescued the International Space station when the shuttle blew up and now support it full time.

@LLGE1 the J 20 is more manuverable than the F 22 but has weaker missiles and is twice as cheap compared to the F 22. but in the end if you have more planes you can attack multiple areas at once and if you have less you cant. so the j 20 is STRAGITICALLY better than the F 22. Youve also got to see that the US had 45 more years to develop stealth fighters/aircraft than the chinese so of course its better in terms of innovation. thats like comparing a WW2 plane with a 5th generation plane.

The pilots loved it and its combat record is steller. The tomcat was designed as a fleet defence fighter. So of course its going to be more nimble. The only reason the f111 was tried in the navy was because some of the US gov were too tightass to develop 2 different aircraft.

@MavZilLa09 I don't think it was designed to compete with the F-22... Keep in mind Chinese Military Doctrine is more about Asymmetric War than going head on to fight anybody. If anything, they'll design Anti-Air Missiles that can take down the Raptor, while designing fighters like the J-20 to be larger (larger engines to be faster, more weapons payload, and more fuel) to basically evade the F-22 and other air defenses and bomb the crap out of it's targets using its supersonic speed and stealth.

Sorry gman, first variable thrust nozzle was the British 'Flying Bedstead' demonstrated at Farnborough in 1970's which then led to the British Harrier VTOL which was bought by US.. Incidentally, Russian aircraft designs can equal, if not excel, US designs. Where they fall down is in their avionics - tho' their technology can't be that bad, it was Russian rockets that rescued the International Space station when the shuttle blew up and now support it full time.

@LLGE1 the J 20 is more manuverable than the F 22 but has weaker missiles and is twice as cheap compared to the F 22. but in the end if you have more planes you can attack multiple areas at once and if you have less you cant. so the j 20 is STRAGITICALLY better than the F 22. Youve also got to see that the US had 45 more years to develop stealth fighters/aircraft than the chinese so of course its better in terms of innovation. thats like comparing a WW2 plane with a 5th generation plane.

It was confirmed yesterday that a couple of these aircraft have violated Philippine airspace last March 21 2011. The chinese can build any aircraft they want as long as they stay away from my islands(yep, im a fil-am).
