@MultiPLAYER1991 good grief you idiot.....were you even listening the the beauty of Isaac's play? or were you too busy critiqing his eyeglasses? he's quite old here and of course, his glasses reflect that....shame on you
Shtern means "rock" in German. Abram means "father of a multitude" in Hebrew. He plays this piece like the father of a multitude of rocks. Listen to Hassid (which means "riteous" in Hebrew!)
hakmirchai-Shtern,or stern as it is spelled in German means star and not rock. Stein is rock in German. Josef Hassid is the greatest violinist that ever lived. P.S.-Sorry SergioCQH-I hadn't as yet scrolled down that far,but you are obviously quite right.
marccreate - Yes, the beginning of the first note is not perfect. But that's a very small flaw (there are a couple of others, all unsurprising in a violinist his age) in a fascinating and important performance.
I would like hear Sarah Chang perform this tune on the violin. Nevertheless, Abrahm Shtern does a phenomenal job on his violin. Meditation barely sounds more beautiful than this performance.
I don't know much about music but this sounds like a technically very competent rendition to me. However, I just don't get the tingly feeling that Milstein's version gives me.
great! its really nice to know that people that age are still enjoying themselves with playing music. i think that if you do a little less vibratio and put more emotion in it then it will be absolutely fantastic.
A masterclass in skill and interpretation - the appalling recording quality does not do this great artist the justice he deserves, nor the interfering live audience. Musicians cannot be compared on emotions alone - art must elevate us as well as move us.
Junevi2000.Well my teacher studied with Eugene Ysaye, I was a scholarship student to Eastman School of Music, and have been playing professionally most of my life. What you have accomplished? I don't like to hear foul-mouthed musical illiterates give their amateur opinions. We are talking about violin playing and not trying hurt the feelings of old men. You're the illogical one, you little snot.
The more I listen the worse he gets. No, bowings are not always personal, not when they are so unfaithful to the score. Over generations, artists find out what works and doesn't. He uses too much vibrato, he fails to take advantage of the contrasts in color if he would vary his vibrato and play piano when he is supposed to. Just study the score. The composer maps it all out. Shtern is a very good amateur violinist. I never heard him in his prime, so I won't judge him.
Marccreate, why should you listen more if he gets worse, I don't see any sense or logic in what you are saying. What do you know about vibrato. I'm pretty sure marccreate you wouldn't be able to play "twinkle twinkle little star, or handle the violin properly if given a chance,so you'd better shut up and give the old man (a break) the respect he so rightly deserve.
Junevi2000. As I said, I have played this piece for over 40 years. I went back to this site just to see if you had any more drivel to post. I repeat: My teacher studied with Eugene Ysaye, I was a scholarship student to Eastman School of Music, and have been playing professionally most of my life. What you have accomplished? I don't like to hear foul-mouthed musical illiterates give their amateur opinions.
Let's not get carried away. He's an old man who plays well, but nowhere near in class of people like Elman. His bowings are not the best, or his beat and intonation
Only to a point are bowings personal. You watch the bowings of the best violinists and tell me if they similar or not. Upbeat and downbeats are what this piece is about. You play an upbeat with the bow going toward the frog by playing it up bow. Ah never mind
Now this is absolutely fantastic. The way he plays each note, the firmness of his bowing...he's making the violin practically weep! Thanks for the video!
beautiful (': have to play this for my grade 7, never gonna sound as good as this but il try shah <3

Did you all study with Shtern? What is this? The first note is shaky and out of tune. You can listen to cartloads of fine performances on you tube.

What's your rush, Mr. Peepers? Slow down! Put some music in your playing, and you'll be on your way to becoming a fair musician! Good luck, Honey!
