I discovered that you still get the plosives coming through onto recording if you have the pop filter too close to the mic. Someone gave me the tip that you should put your hand behind the pop filter at about the same distance away that the mic is, say a few loudish "B" and "P" sounds. If you feel a burst of air on your hand, it's too close, and you should move the pop filter far enough away for this not to happen any more.

my pop-filter is the nylon mesh in the front but then there is a backing about an inch and a half behind it witch is the metal mesh and in between em is an acrylic rod. this filter keeps "P" and "S" sounds on the low. its excellent for hip hop vocalists and i barley have to use a desser at all....

@dabigjokeoftheday, a handkerchief is step one in the development of such items as these - there would likely be some vibration transfer. Also, it won't be smoothed out if just draped over the screen; therefore the sound would not pass through evenly (frequency-wise)

Can you assist me as to why a mic may have a distorted sound when singing into it at a louder volume, that isn't even that loud when the mic's volume is even down? i have a condensor AKG 200 Perception, can't understand what it is.

@CastleRecordz You could be clipping, check gain? Or even check your recording software or interface for buffer size etc. Don't use a too high sample rate and bit depth if your computer can't handle it :S Also, if you're running loads of effects on many tracks in a project simultaneously and you don't have a quick enough comp then it could get a bit overloaded.

I also have the mixer down as well as the audiobox interface I use and still for some reason when I raise my voice even at a semi louder volume it just seems to clip easily.

FYI4DIY

I used pantyhose for the filter.

An embroidery hoop (sewing supply)

A small 3/4inch x 3/4inch x 3-4 inch long plexiglas (plastics supply)

Very, very heavy gauge electrical wire about 1/4-1/2 inch OD (electric supply)

Drilled some holes and made the fixtures.

It helps to have some tools and machines - looks cheap, but works perfectly.

I'd want a pro-made filter but didn't have the money at the time.

It was a fun little project at the time and is doable.

A pop filter is not a "must".

Your mics have pop filters built in.

They might protect a ribbbon mic from extreme pressure if you're really yelling in it close.

They are somtimes helpful if you are actually getting pops from vocal sibilance. It depends on the singer. I find them most useful for keeping singers from getting too close. Some singers are used to getting real close to a dynamic mic and keep drifting closer and closer to a condenser when they should stay back.

you are right. in fact they are a result of improper mic technique. The old school method (1940s-1950s) back when all the good stuff was being built and used by the masters, the vocal mic was placed up about 10cm higher than the mouth, pointed downward directly toward the mouth. The singer sang aiming straight forward (not aiming up toward the mic) and the spit and plosived blew down below the mic. I use this method since I learned it and it lets the mic have its full fidelity.

Because it looks cool...but it is required only when you have a tube inside and you dont wish it to heat up the capsule...I do min all upside down due to the fact I dont use stands but I suspend from the cieling using desk flanges...Ive never had a mic break because a stand fell over.

The real reason we turn the Condensers upside down is because, after spending long hours in the studio Condensers get hot and produce a lot of heat. Its not good for the mic diaphragm to get hot, therefore we turn the mic upside down because heat rises and keeps the heat off the diaphragm.

But it does look cool. lol

Or, no joke, just use loose cotton weave socks. Place about three over the mic. Then, if you use the hoop and panty hose in conjunction, it works great.
