12 years ago I was sitting at a stoplight, listening to this song, with the only woman I was to ever fall in love with. I told her I'd like to find out what album the song was on. She wasn't a Floyd fan but two days later she gave me a cassette and that night we made love to the the music. Ironically, the title of the album and the words in this song described my life with her. When she left I couldn't listen to this without feeling like I'd swallowed razorblades, until today.
THIS ALBUM KICKS ASS......OK......EVERYONE THAT CLICKS FUCKING DISLIKE UM GONNA KICK YOUR ASS CAUSE THERES NOTHING TO DISLIKE ABOUT THIS YOUR GONNA CHANCE IT GETTING DELETED THINK BEFOR YOU ACT
I have seen both in concert, and can honestly say that David Gilmore is much better in concert. Waters is a little conceited and pretty much sticks to The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon. I actually didn't go to see Waters in Pittsburgh, this past year, and very glad I didn't. They said the concert wasn't that great. Gilmore is much much much better! :)
Theres nothing like it .Met both and they are the smartest peopleo to walk into. Very well educated and not burned out the way people may see them. Far from it Hope you get to see them somehow well worth the memoreys
I'd rather see Gilmour live. I like his playing and what it adds to the music when Roger has people play Floyd songs it just feels like a cover. The notes are there and the playing is almost perfect but it lacks the feel that Gilmour puts in it. Gilmour also changes up his concert setlists and has music from mostly all the albums or at least some stuff from the older ones. Roger just likes to stick to The Wall and don't get me wrong I love that album but for me the combo of-
Rogers and Gilmour on that album was great. Their voices went together and the playing was perfect. I suppose that aside from those things, Gilmour is one of my greatest inspirations in music and seeing him would allow me to die peacefully. Its just a shame that I probably will never see either of them in concert except on DVD's but with that I'm happy.
@HOLEINTHERUBBER Waters seems to have more props but, the actual performance is no where near gilmour. Thats why i would much rather see Gilmour live.
I remember getting this album at my grandmothers house with christmas money she gave to me. I made it tradition that every time I went there I would listen to it once before I left. She passed away this passed summer, I will always think of her when I listen to it.
I love the title...We all have these " momentary lapse of reason " things goin' on...It is a good album...I heard this was a solo effort...one of the guys is oughta the picture now...I believe Roger Waters produced this one on His own
I think that while "The Division Bell" was musically superior than this album, sounding much less studio-sterile, I find "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" to be far better lyrically. 'One Slip' is the best lyrical achievement on the album. As for the rest, even if 'A New Machine' doesn't add anything, 'Learning to Fly' and 'Yet Another Movie' are also great lyrics, 'Sorrow' grimly poetic, and even if the 'The Dogs of War' smacks of novelty, it's still a great listen.
I admit that you could say this really isnt a "Pink Floyd" album and instead just a Gilmour solo album.....but then again, I really like David's work.
At one point in time, Rolling Stone magazine criticized Zeppelin AND Eric Clapton. So, to all you people out there who talk about the critics' opinions on Pink Floyd I've got some news: Their opinions don't count for shit. The only musical critique I care about is my OWN; progressive without being pretentious, energetic without losing control--this is amazing. Don't compare it to the past--there is no comparing because the past is gone. Just listen to the here and now.
And to ANYONE asserting that Waters was the driving force, or most influential member, not just for any LENGTH of time, but at any single god damned POINT in time, you don't know bugger all about them evidently. They probably couldn't have done it all without each member giving their all, but Waters was as close to expendable as anyone in the lineup got. Go listen to the Pulse live version of Dark Side of the Moon for proof.
@willrichtor Really??? Dark Side was partially written by Waters..who cares who plays bass in a live version. Guy Pratt played bass for the Pulse tour, and he is arguably alot better than Roger at bass. I'm, not saying Waters was the driving force, but your reply is just silly.
@Chazzo29 No, it's not. The only time, in Pink Floyd, where he ever had the full creative control over the music that he desired and was willing to back cut the other members for was on the Final Cut, and, while I will credit it for being a good album as far as albums go, it is without doubt the sorriest excuse for a Pink FLOYD record that there is. Listen to what the other members have done without Waters, and listen to what Waters has done without them. Great lyricist, hamstrung by ego.
@willrichtor And what they did WITH Waters in the early-mid 70's, especially the pre Dark Side era was fucking brilliant, nothing comes even remotely close.
@willrichtor Really??? Dark Side was partially written by Waters..who cares who plays bass in a live version. Guy Pratt played bass for the Pulse tour, and he is arguably alot better than Roger at bass. I'm, not saying Waters was the driving force, but your reply is just silly.
People criticizing Floyd, of ALL bands, for not sticking to a formula for a certain sound, makes me sick. You don't get it, and you never will. Go listen to AC/DC, they write great songs without deviating from the norm, you'll be more comfortable there. King Crimson and Pink Floyd evolved their sounds continually over the years so that no two albums sound very similar. Ironic that the thing that made them great would be the same trait that, in later years, would earn them the most criticism.
Pink Floyd has never made a bad album. The Final Cut was a depressing mess, but still good. To all the people harping on about post Waters not being "real Floyd" get over it! Same could be said about post Barrett, but the FACT is, David Gilmour was both Syd Barret's idol AND a major inspiration for the formation of Floyd in the first place. AND, although his voice doesn't suit many songs, especially cuts from the Wall, he's a damn sight better singer than Waters ever was.
@Drackkor You like this better than Wish You Were Here, and The Wall? Wow, The Final Cut I can understand, it was just a throwback album after The Wall, but I'm sorry Wish You Were Here and The Wall DOMINATE over this album, but to each his own
@Drackkor I disagree. This album is not Pink Floyd according to my ears. There is nothing truly intriguing about it like a past Pink Floyd album. No adventure. This just sounds like a generic 80s album.
@boozygrogy This album being a very poor 'Pink Floyd' labeled album and me writing an album "this good" is incompatible. Nor doesn't does it change my opinion (fact =D) that the past albums sound much better.
To be fair to the David, The Division Bell was certainly an improvement from this one, but still lacking that Floyd sound. Haters gonna hate.
@Spydiggity Good point. The Final Cut was not a good album when compared to their past albums. Imo, their last good/great album was The Wall. Either way, I still felt that The Final Cut was at least interesting.
@584megadeth theres no doubt that roger was probably the most influential member for a long period. but he's certainly not a member of Dave's fan club
Apparently Forrest Gump does not like this song enough to cast a vote!? Heck,I'm not even a fan of the band and I like it...and also TIME. This song also uses the alarm bells going off at the beginning.
@uwoodyjk Defionitely not. The basslines in Floyd songs have been like that since long before Lapse, even if you might not have noticed it. Go back and listen to Dark Side and The Wall, and especially Animals - even if they aren't in such a pre form as in this song, there's that bassline in many of the songs.
i had these gigs really far away from my hometown every night in snow & ice. my guitar player had this CD and i would sleep on the hide-a-bed with the band all over the place. he would just repeat this track. i knew all the lyrics the first time i woke up. i love this tune. he gave me a CD player for Xmas i still have and his CD...i still have.
I know this will piss off a lot of hard core classic PF fans - but since I got this album for my birthday in 1987 I've considered One Slip as one of my favourite PS songs.
i really enjoy this song and the album even tho waters isnt on it...i think gilmour and wright were the real brains behind the songs...roger contributed dont get me wrong but the songs im more drawn to are the ones gilmour and wright worked on together...we will always miss you richard
@mrswiss420 Pink Floyd are an outstanding band to me. Really, they created a new genre and are way ahead. Outstanding. Including this album. However what came afterwards is not so great anymore. I think Pink Floyd needed Waters and Waters needed Floyd. It was the group the made this all so big.
The best thing about this album is its great cover. Musically, the album is utterly indiferent. Some of its tunes can be described as "interesting", but on the whole MLOR is a very mediocre job, at least to my way of thinking. Can't compare to records like "Meddle", "Dark Side", "The Wall", "Animals" etc.
@billydumont the song begins with conception (the sperm unlocking the eggs secret code) and bang! Pregnancy! the rest of the song tells the story of how things got this way.
Love this song. Reminds me of being 19. Swimming in the ocean all day, skin all tanned and salty, beautiful young girls just a phone call away. Youth truly is wasted on the young.
Good Heavens. If more people knew the depths of his prophetic nature, David Gilmour would be a Catholic saint. My guess, David, is that even you don't fathom it. Who will play you in the movie? DiCaprio?
Post-Waters Floyd isn't often held in the highest of esteem by most Floydians, I understand, but I like what I've heard of it so far, probably because most of the music I got into before Pink Floyd was made in the 80's and beyond haha. Each and every single member of Pink Floyd has my deepest and sincerest respect. And I MEAN every single member. I just love them too much :')
went to this concert in 88 saw them in seattle and met the band at the peace arch border crossing on the way home, asked gilmour for an autograph but he refused to sign my concert shirt, but it was pissing rain so i could understand that, then saw them two days later in vancouver, also saw roger waters that yr as well, was like seeing floyd again, now waters is coming to vancouver and there are rumours that gilmour might join him on stage, sold out and i have no ticket...
I love the post Roger stuff. Not to say I didnt like the stuff he was in but this stuff is so much more well magical in way bigger louder and brighter.
When my wife and I got married we both decided no children. In late January '03 she & I were grocery shopping and I was hearing to this on my Walkman, listening to the lyrics and acknowledging that, yes it is about an unexpected pregnancy. Then this cold worm of unease slithered through my guts but I thought, "No way." Well as Wayne says, "WAY!" 2/12/03 positive EPT. BUT, our son is the greatest thing that ever happened to us. Our love for him is "A Love without End, Amen." Thank you God.

What is this song about? Can someone let me know if you have any theories? thanx :)
billydumont 1 year ago
@billydumont I believe it's about slipping into a romantic encounter that you didn't intend.
63morgan 1 year ago
@billydumont the song begins with conception (the sperm unlocking the eggs secret code) and bang! Pregnancy! the rest of the song tells the story of how things got this way.

Love this song. Reminds me of being 19. Swimming in the ocean all day, skin all tanned and salty, beautiful young girls just a phone call away. Youth truly is wasted on the young.

@velveetaslingshot That's a good quote. Is it yours...because I'm going to use it.
azbacnikorange 1 year ago
@azbacnikorange "Youth is wasted on the young" is an old quote from I don't where. But all the rest was me.

@anthonythatsme100 Lot of that guitar stuff on this song is played by studio Ace Michael Landau. But yeah, Gilmour rocks anyways.

went to this concert in 88 saw them in seattle and met the band at the peace arch border crossing on the way home, asked gilmour for an autograph but he refused to sign my concert shirt, but it was pissing rain so i could understand that, then saw them two days later in vancouver, also saw roger waters that yr as well, was like seeing floyd again, now waters is coming to vancouver and there are rumours that gilmour might join him on stage, sold out and i have no ticket...

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra pwned the crap out of this song. I only wish they released a video or something of that concert.

In 2:50 there is sort of a disco influence. Reminds me of Michael Jackson´s music...
It shows how Pink Floyd was evolving as time passed...
