Hmm, I've heard tons about this movie, but I've never seen it; I'll have to find it. Good scene, even though Andy lies about the "colt" and the "walther" LOL
You gotta love Easy Andy---even though short, a real confident, New Yorker type, good people skills, and great busniessman, especially when it comes to offering additional products for sale. Great scene! Travis is such a contradiction--hates the sex/smut stuff (except for the Swedish movie) but into killing w/ heavy duty weapons
your a liberal.democrat @joexman go hide under a blanket.alll this shows is when you bann guns only the bad guys can get em. NO one protects my family but me...
I've always considered this one of the scariest films I have ever seen and this scene exemplifies why. The fact that a sociopath like Travis is able to purchase guns so easily...it reminds me of 'Bowling For Colombine' and how guns are finding their way into the hands of the wrong people. That shot where he's aiming that gun at everyone outside still scares the crap outta me.
@thejoexman I think this also depends on your views of Travis. It all boils down to if you view Travis as a true sociopath, or a darker hero, acting on our primal urges to lash out and destroy. Taxi Driver was so popular because each and every one of us has a little Travis inside them. It's all about how we keep him at bay. I do agree with you though, the fact that more than 75% of our nation owns a gun is outright scary. Just not in this context IMHO.
There's an entire documentary Scorcese directed called "American Boy" about Steven Prince, who played Easy Andy. He wasn't really acting in this scene--guy was a nutcase.
@SoldierUSArmy Trolling? Do you realise this is a black market arms dealer? They don't observe laws, and will deal in firearms or anything else despite them being outlawed. In fact, doing so would just empower the black market, as they would become the sole source for arms, just like it has made them more powerful as a result of the pathetic "war on drugs" (remember the mafia was created during prohibition).
I see comments that he doesn't know his guns despite serving in Vietnam. I believe aside from the M16,M14, Colt auto, M45, Soviet Weapons, and WWII era weapons, the only weapon he would have seen that he's buying would be the .38 but not in snub nose. Everything else would have to have been bought off the blackmarket but he would have never trained with the other guns he's buying.
" Its nickel plated snub nose." Love the hand movements as Andy describes it... He sounds like he's selling ginsu knives and like any good salesman would do as soon as Travis makes a big purchase you throw in the kitchen sink....
Meh, I assumed that Travis would've know his handguns a wee bit better, being that Travis was a Marine. I was just fuckin around about the meth, but it is great food for thought, eh? The last bit was how I would've responded to Andy's inquires/sales pitches lol. I remember the 'No more destroyers of my body" line, trust me. Ive seen this flick more times than any healthy individual should lol. For a good while I pretty much was Travis Bickle.
If Im not mistaken I believe I saw a Browning Hi Power or a 1911 (similar frame and cant tell from camera angle) in one of the suitcases.Either way, why the hell didnt Travis buy that too, or instead of that POS .25 auto? Also, imagine how Travis would've powered through Sport's whore house if he was on Crystal Meth.
Andy: "how about dope...? I can get you a brand new Cadillac with the pink slip for 3 grand..."
Me: an 8 of coke and 6 grams of hash. ... and what color is the caddy?
@thefatguy556 Travis didn't seem to be really gun savvy, he wasn't very smart in many areas which probably fueled a good deal of rage. And as for drugs, during the middle of the film he states how we would be rid of "destroyers of my body", so with that mentality he'd probably shun any and all drugs.
@thefatguy556 Try putting a full sized 1911 in an arm slide. He wasn't buying the .25 as a primary gun. A .44 magnum, a .38 special, a Walther .380, and a little .25 in an arm slide are more than enough to do the damage you need to do at close range in an anti-gun town like NYC.
That 380 is an Astra Constable , not a walther , but I think that was an intentional mistake being as the Constable is a knock off of the Walther and Travis is buying it fom a guy who probably doesn't know much about the gun.
@ericspinball The barrel of the gun is pointing to the right as Andy puts the holster on the case. When the camera angle changes, the barrel is pointing the opposite direction.
@AdudenamedKemp oops, I was looking at the 44 and not the 380. When you said right gun I was thinking that it was the right gun when the camera is on the bed. Yes, I see that he sets the walther down with all 4 barrels facing the same direction and then its facing to the left. Gosh, where did those prices go too???
You notice how travis is aiming, with his sight eye closed? This leads me to believe he knows nothing about firearms. And alot of what happens in this film is imagined.Kinda like an american psycho.
@AdudenamedKemp YOU DON'T MAKE NO SENSE AND UR NOT A FUNNY UR A CAMEL TOE ASIAN DICK SUCKING FOOL ... CADILLAC IS A FANCY PIMP STYLE CAR ESPICALLY BACK IN THE 1970,S. AND NO THEY DIDN'T PUT THAT ON THE SCRIPT TO BE FUNNY !!! I RATHER DRIVE A DOPE ASS LOOKING CADILLAC THEN CAUGHT DRIVING A FUCKEN TOYOTA... SO WAKE THE FUCK UP!!
I thought is was funny how he went from offering him drugs to something as fancy as a Cadillac. I just thought that a guy like Andy (not a professional salesman for any company) wouldn't normally have a Cadillac for sale.
I wonder if Travis really is an ex-marine, like he tells his boss at the taxi company? He looks like he's unfamiliar with the firearms. Perhaps his persona as a Vietnam vet is part of his psychosis?
@MondoBeno Yeah, that is a theory surrounding this film. Especially since Travis didn't hand the guy discharge papers, despite claiming be in the Marines. But then again, he did know about the Mohawk thing and these weapons weren't standard issue in the Marines.
@SecretService80 Is it one of the license built knockoffs? It does somewhat resemble a Walther, incidentally he says it is made to replace the P38, actually the PPK was around before the adoption of the P38 and many of the features of the PPK were built into it.
@schizoidboy I agree, there is a resemblance, but it might just be mindless facts to make it so he appears to know his weapons. Keep in mind that most moviegoers don't pay attention to that kind of stuff. Good thinking.
Yeah, this scene does sort of have a relaxing feel to it.
Also, all of the guns, and the magnum holster are $915. Now, say Travis were to buy all of those guns today, it would be $3,500! Travis must work for a high paying firm, but then again I don't know how much cab drivers, particularly ones in the Big Apple get paid.
Well, as Travis says earlier in the film, he works double shifts and off the meter, and pulls down pretty good money. He has virtually no expenses. You have to remember that NYC is the 70s was an absolute hell-hole. You could live in a dump like Bickle's studio for next to nothing. Gentrification and IB mega-money was a decade away. The City was broke, rent control was in effect, and there was no flipping the rentals because the fat cats wouldn't live there.
The scene is designed to be relaxing. It's Travis getting exactly what he wants. Listen to Andy's tone while he's pitching his sell for the weapons. It's relaxed...easy. Compared to when he's trying to sell drugs to Travis, he's frantic, the shot cuts to his face and he looks like a fiend.
Go back to when Travis is being sold smut and pitched to buy a prostitute. It's vulgar and Travis is offended by "Sport".
It's a perfect representation of how American view sex and violence.
@artpiston Excellent comment. But for the drugs, I don't think Andy's frantic fiend behavior was because he was just making a quick pitch for his other services for a future transaction while he had a buying customer on his hands. That's why he was rattling off as many options in the off-chance something piqued Travis' interest. I don't think his selling demeanor would change if he had pill bottles or baggies in his luggage instead of pistols.
HOW did martin scorsese not get nominated for best director for this?! This is not only a masterpiece of cinema, but it's scorsese's masterpiece, hands down. it just shows that the oscars are nothing, and represent pure ignorance.

I watch this scene and can't help but hear John Cougar Mellencamp singing, "Aw, but ain't that America?" Every time there's another mass shooting, I think of this scene, this movie, this character. So sad it was prophetic.
@Officer1a1 a lotta scenes in this movie are relaxing it seems. like when he's making the slingshot thing with the drawer that scene goes on and on and you can hear honking and faint talking outside. amazing! :)
I believe it's because the scene is a seduction. Guns inherently have a vibe of safety and power about them, and the salesman (and Scorsese, and the writer) is skilled at making Travis (and the audience) feel comfortable and confident in his purchase.
Having a round in the chamber IS the proper method, that way you don't have to rack the slide and waste valuable seconds. Plus, it's an extra bullet in the gun. It's how I carry my gun. Just keep the safety on and it should be fine.
While the lack of a safety is true, the trigger is double action. So since the trigger would have to be pulled so far, carrying one in the chamber wouldn't be bad. Travis clearly does this anyway since in the scene when he uses it he just pops it out and fires without racking the slide. It's all about trigger finger discipline. I don't think I would take advice from Easy Andy either, since he thinks a .44 will go through an engine block at 100 yards. Good luck doing that Easy Andy!
Hey man, You got to remember Andy's usual customers. They are drug dealers and pimps who FORGET THEY HAVE ROUNDS IN THE CHAMBERS. HE ISNT NO GUN SHOP DEALER!!
Yeah I totally understand what you are saying. The majority of Andy's customers are going to be dumbasses that shouldn't have guns, but I'm just trying to stress that the proper carry method for someone who knows what they're doing is to have a round in the chamber.
the whole point of that last part in this scene, where he offers the drugs, is to prove that despite Easy Andy selling travis the guns to enact "justice" --- Andy is not a good guy. The fact that he's selling drugs marks him a bad guy. buying guns from andy proves that Travis is dipping into the dark side (if any, a term) to attack the dark.
dont you think a simple glove would do the trick? Also, when disposing of illegal firearms its best to dissemble it first. Toss each of the different pieces in different places. Also it would be wise to take a round file slightly smaller than the diameter of the barrel and scratch up the inside of the barrel a bit, this way if it is ever recovered and a test round is compared to a recovered round, the markings wont match
The next time I want to go to Africa to kill Elephants, I'm gonna look Andy up.

Nowadays, I'd rather buy a SIG-Sauer P226R, a H&K USP .45 caliber, a Glock 17 compact, a Walther PPK, and a Tauras P38 Judge as my back-up. What? It's 2010.

how about that?

I saw a German Luger P08 and a .45 1911 in that first suitcase. Why the fuck didn't he take those?

I watch this scene and can't help but hear John Cougar Mellencamp singing, "Aw, but ain't that America?" Every time there's another mass shooting, I think of this scene, this movie, this character. So sad it was prophetic.

Don't know if this is a coincidence but Leonardo DiCaprio had a .380 Walther in silver in The Departed which was also directed by Marty.

Maybe I'm odd but I find this scene very relaxing.
Officer1a1 2 years ago 77
@Officer1a1 a lotta scenes in this movie are relaxing it seems. like when he's making the slingshot thing with the drawer that scene goes on and on and you can hear honking and faint talking outside. amazing! :)
88mphsss 2 years ago
@Officer1a1 YES YES!! i cant explain it but YES! there is something really relaxing about this scene maybe its the way andy is selling idk.
19smalltown89 1 year ago
@Officer1a1 me too!!! ur not odd
emoviebuff87 1 year ago
@Officer1a1
I believe it's because the scene is a seduction. Guns inherently have a vibe of safety and power about them, and the salesman (and Scorsese, and the writer) is skilled at making Travis (and the audience) feel comfortable and confident in his purchase.

@Officer1a1 -You're not odd-as do i....maybe it's a personality type or sumthin who da' fuuack knows.

Andy clearly doesn't know how to properly carry a gun since he calls anyone who keeps a round in the chamber dumb. That IS the proper method.
BigDThe0G 2 years ago
He meant having a round in the chamber in addition to a fully loaded magazine.
GoldenColts 2 years ago 2
Having a round in the chamber IS the proper method, that way you don't have to rack the slide and waste valuable seconds. Plus, it's an extra bullet in the gun. It's how I carry my gun. Just keep the safety on and it should be fine.
BigDThe0G 2 years ago 2
It doesnt look like that little ass gun has a safety. Give Easy Andy the benefit of the doubt, will ya?
Graphic36 2 years ago

HE ISNT NO GUN SHOP DEALER!!
ilovejourney1 2 years ago
Yeah I totally understand what you are saying. The majority of Andy's customers are going to be dumbasses that shouldn't have guns, but I'm just trying to stress that the proper carry method for someone who knows what they're doing is to have a round in the chamber.
BigDThe0G 2 years ago
Oh, you're right, man. No doubt about that. I get what you are saying.

well since you ask, the fact that "jungle bunny" is no longer part of the common lexicon means we've made progress :)

LMAOOOO THAT NIGGA GOT EVRYTHING. get ur money son
buttfac3203 2 years ago
the whole point of that last part in this scene, where he offers the drugs, is to prove that despite Easy Andy selling travis the guns to enact "justice" --- Andy is not a good guy. The fact that he's selling drugs marks him a bad guy. buying guns from andy proves that Travis is dipping into the dark side (if any, a term) to attack the dark.

My favorite scene in the entire film. I love Easy Andy!

125 hey you get what you pay for, it's an illegal throwaway basically, fire it with a ziploc on your hand toss it in the fuckin canal.
MarchoftheMuffins 2 years ago
dont you think a simple glove would do the trick? Also, when disposing of illegal firearms its best to dissemble it first. Toss each of the different pieces in different places. Also it would be wise to take a round file slightly smaller than the diameter of the barrel and scratch up the inside of the barrel a bit, this way if it is ever recovered and a test round is compared to a recovered round, the markings wont match
