  • Who's that singing Pretty Women at the end?

  • why do you hav len cariou's voice with pictures of george hearn?

  • F-ing brilliant

  • haha- I just realized the movie will have three Harry Potter Baddies!

    {Helena Bohnam Carter (Bellatrix) will play Mrs. Lovett, Timothy Spall (Scabbers) as the Beadle, and Alan Rickman (do I really have to fill this in?) as Judge Turpin.}

  • Oh it has it's comic moments, to be sure. But a comedy? I think NOT! Every tragic piece has it's comic relief. This is as tragic as tragedy comes, albeit come-uppance is not a virtue in this story! Still the poor guy gets his beautiful wife taken by a corrupt official and his thug and is shipped off to the penal colony across the ocean. What's so funny about that? Making meat pies is darkly humorous though!

  • Sorry Rumpleteazer, I couldn't find the shot I was talking about but there is another pre-pub shot of him as Sweeney on the site: johnnydepp-zone(dot)com/reeljohnny. I saw a shot of him there in that Adam Ant "suit". Hope it's still there by the time you get this post.

  • Alan Rickman (Snape in Harry Potter) will play Judge Turpin, Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat!!) Will play Pirelli (since when is this comedy "golden boy" a trained singer?! And Pirelli is no Mr. Niceguy!) Rickman I can see, he's a "heavy", as we call them in the biz. Depp and now Borat will make this a comic farce. I still think Willem Deffoe should play Sweeney!

  • actually Sasha Baron-cohen has trained in singing since he was like 2 ok he has been in musical theater in england for years before he created the characters in his show. so yeah don't fuck with the movie hell sweeney todd is pretty much a comedy anyway not a all out comedy but it is one of the few trully funny plays hat has been written ever.

  • Johnny Depp is often underestimated. He has a very unique theatrical range that is only properly tapped by Burton, to be brutally honest.

  • Knowing Burton, the movie will retain it's dark atmosphere, but the question is, will it be the RIGHT type of darkness?

  • i agree!!

  • Saw a publicity photo of Depp as Sweeney. He looks like Adam (from Adam and the Ants) with giant hair and a Bride of Frankenstein streak! A leather bikers vest? I am having serious doubts! Can't put the blame on Depp, he's just taking care of his family, I'll have to pin the blame on Burton! He's bitten off quite a mouth full! Hope he can chew it.

PS, I played Sweeney in a national tour in '84, I know the role well. I just hope they can catch the spirit of the show.

  • You are correct about Burton not Waters to direct! What was I thinking? HB Carter I could watch happily, doing ANYTHING! But Depp as Sweeney smakes me cringe. Why not Willem Defoe or Christopher Walken! They need a "heavy" in the role, not a "pretty boy" with a bad accent. (the only decent job I've seen Depp do lately is "Secret Window")

  • It is the musical, it says so EVERYWHERE!

  • I'm eager to see the film. I mean... Johnny and Helena really aren't who I pictured Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett to be, but hey... it'll be interesting, no doubt.

  • Johnny Depp will RUIN Sweeney Todd! All I can hope is that it goes the way of Don Quixote! (the film directed by Monty Python's Michael Gilliam that went two weeks into production and was cancelled) Waters is a fool with a boner for Depp and doesn't care whether this show works as a film! This role requires more than an actor who can sing. It takes a SINGER who can act!

  • I can't wait to see Johnny Depp play Todd. I hear he's doing his own singing. John Waters said that even though Johnny lip-synced in Cry Baby, he really can sing and he actually made tapes of some songs. But they decided to go with a different singer to be consistent.

  • George Hearn is beautiful.

  • George Hearn wins at life.

    I love Sweeney so much!

  • I belive hes the best Sweeney Todd ever!

  • i cant wait til this comes out!!!

  • That's not Len Cariou. That's George Hearn

  • yeah, but it's Len Cariou who is singing. The audio is from the Original Cast, but the pictures are from the movie with George Hearn.

  • cool

  • No, Johnny Depp was dubbed in Cry Baby, htrix.

  • haha!!! Johnny Depp!!! that's hilarious!!! go get 'im Sweeney!

  • I'm watching this then, !poof!, Johnny Depp.Came completly out of nowhere. Made me chuckle.

  • Ah, just thought I'd mention it since, you know, Sweeney Todd musical/Sweeney Todd movie... =]

  • It's not George Hearn singing it either just his still shots. It's Len Cariou the original Broadway Sweeney's voice.

  • It was really him. Really really. But only that one song.

  • Pretty Women at the end of the credits was sang by Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner.

  • I could quite read this in the credits, but who sang "Pretty Women" at the end? It's really, well, pretty....

  • Johnny Depp can sing, yes. He sang the song "King Cry Baby" for the movie Cry Baby (although he wasn't credited for it due to financial restrictions) and he's been playing in bands since he was a teenager. Also, if you watch the last scene of the first Pirates film, you can hear that he certainly can hold a tune. :)

  • was that really him singing in cry baby i htought i was some on else

  • It was him, but there is a big difference between that kind of singing and the singing required for the role of sweeney. If he does sing, and doesn't get classical voice training, a lot of sondheim-ites are going to be a little ticked.

  • ... what?

  • too funny.

  • You know, they're actually making a major motion picture of Sweeney Todd. It will have Johnny Depp as Sweeney. I'm not kidding. They're going to start filming soon. Check it out on IMDB.com. Now, I'm not sure if it's a musical or not, but I will say this: Deja vu Phantom and Gerard Butler.

  • That's right. *curses Tim Burton*

  • phantom was just awful. but maybe ST will be better? can johnny depp sing??? butler sure can't.

  • I checked out IMDB. Wow! I am a Sweeney fanatic. Saw the original production and the newest. Both were amazing. I'm a little leery of this. However, I'm convninced that Johnny Depp can do anything! Tim Burton can be bizarre, but I love most of his movies. Here's hoping!

  • It's Sweeney! Sweeney Todd! Only one of the best musical of all time!

  • I know that, I just don't think its funny...(???)

  • Um...I don't get it.
