is technique enough to be considered a great bass player?

its like when a bass player evolves they can lose a raw-ness in their energy that might have been more evident in previous years.

for this reason i prefer the likes of Flea and Rob Trujillo (still got that raw, almost primitive energy), but i wholly appreciate and admire the talents of the like of Vic & Steve and Jaco etc.

I for one always regard musicians by two criteria: their skill and the quality of their music. The latter is by far more important to me. Any idiot and can practice an hour every day and develop stellar technique, but you can't teach or practice the ability to create a beautiful song. I am seldom moved by a skilled musician, they're a dime a dozen. Real SONGWRITERS are far less ubiquitous. Vic has both and ultimately trumps most with his skill ... and his music is beautiful!

I'll be honest i've already seen this movie but i came back to ask everyone a question and its a stupid one at that. I've now had a bass guitar for about a year, and am just realizing now that the standard EADG tuning isn't working on my bass. It's an ibanez, I haven't replaced the strings but am suspecting they are the culprit, i have a digital tuner and it is telling me the string that should be an E is a G i tried tuning it down to an E but it sounds dull. Can anyone give me some pointers?ty
