China only had one such plane, and many programs depended on it. This incident occurred at 500 meters inverted. Probably it was never very safe to eject.
Since 1950 four Chinese test pilots have lost their lives.
The houses and farm fields were coming up to his face, and he had to trouble shoot the only research plane of its kind in China. He flipped 3 switches cutting power to all computers. The cockpit went dark, but he regained hydraulic control and pulled the plane back to level flight.
When he landed he explained what happened to the engineers, and went back in the air 15 minutes later.
they talk about this incident during testing of fly-by-wire system. The software inverted the plane at 500 meters altitude, descending at 80 meters/second. If he ejected they would lose 5 years of research progress. Manual override failed. By 260 meters due to inverted position he could no longer eject.
