It IS easy, when we've done our homework as he has.
He does not "dumb down" this lesson or talk too much. There is no tedious talk of fret-numbers, "TAB" or any other lame beginner's-crutch. He assumes that anyone intelligent enough to play music can count and knows the alphabet up to "G."
He gets right to the point, delivers the info and plays with beautiful feel & tone.
This sounds like the sort of guitar I've heard on all those soul disco records. Christ, how does he get that sound and feel? All those white rhythm guitarists sound so choppy and aggressive, but this black dude is so bloody smooth. I just can't figure out how he's playing so smooth???
Maybe he's using a soft pick? Maybe he's using less attack or force when strumming? God, this really sounds like a real, professional black studio guitarist...—probably because it is!!!
Cool rhythm playing - if you're confused on this, in addition to learning the note names on the fretboard, you will also want to brush up on how to build chords so that you can isolate specific chord tones in your rhythm playing. Learning the intervals between strings is a good way to do this and so is practicing arpeggios and scales.
@arauj86 Generally, he's moving away from "full" chords (4 to 6 strings - the "open string" and barre chords that most players learn when they're starting out) and is playing smaller fragments (1 to 3 strings) that are derived from them. It allows for a more melodic rhythm guitar part (scale-influenced) and keeps you out of the bass player's territory. Notice that he rarely uses the low E string once the demo starts. I'm probably oversimplifying here, but that's the idea.
That Les Paul is really positively gorgeous. Hollowbody LP Custom-style with 2 old Alnico PUs IN FRIGGIN RED? Is that an actual model or a one-off job made just for him?
Hi guys, I've transcribed the first time round the sequence at 1:56 on my blog, feel free to check it out: stevepigott X wordpress Xcom .....(just replace the X's with periods, and then search the blog for 'Paul Jackson' to find the transcription).
@WackyPick Learn the 5th, 7th, and 9th frets too. The 12th fret is a freebie because it's just like the nut. This way, you can know any note instantly by going no more than two frets either way. Example: "What's the note of the G string, 6th fret?" Because you know the 5th fret notes (A D G C E A), you *know* the 5th fret G string note is a C, so the 6th fret is a C#. Once you get this, you will "see" patterns on the fretboard! If a nug like myself can do this, you can too =o)
@WackyPick YES, you are 100% correct. It sounds harder than you think... The place to start is to learn the notes on all strings at all frets, from the 1st through the 12th frets; after the 12th fret, they all repeat again. Begin this adventure by memorizing the nut, low to high, E A D G B E. 3rd fret, G C F A# D G.
@rickames most of it is just playing by ear. just gotta keep practicing until you get the hang of it. Breaking the chords apart by using pentatonic scales or triads. Just have a play around
@WackyPick What Paul is doing is called "playing within the chord." By taking the chords apart, he's using single notes, diads (two-note intervals), and octaves that are part of the chord that happens to fall within that portion of the arrangement. This is an easy way to sound very musical, and not step all over the keys player or another guitarist. It also gives the bassist plenty of room too, because by playing full chords all the time, you're matching notes the bass is using.
@TheTruthRocks Wow im beginning to see what you mean...but to do that i will need to 1. KNow all the notes in the chords being played? 2. Whether major/minor? etc?
@guitarslim1989 The Bb/C Chord would include the notes C-E-G BUT, with a Bb note in the bass. An F major chord over a G would simply be F-A-C, but with a G in the bass.
I can't think of a better guitar instructor than Paul Jackson. He is one of the busiest session musicians in L.A. & has played for the likes of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Ella Fitzgerald, Patti LaBelle, Chicago and Elton John.
I love Paul Jackson's style. He's done backup and lead guitar on various jazz, R&B, and even some gospel albums. I've been studying jazz guitar for a few years, Im definitely going to use this information. :-)
Mr. Jackson, I am a big admirer of you. However, I think its really big of guys like you when you take the time to share your talent with cats that are trying to learn, giving back directly to the audience. Thanks again man. Keep up the great work!!!
Get the original DVD version straight from Paul Jackson Jr web site!! This is a total jewel of a guitar instructional!! I bought 2 copies, one of them was signed by Paul himself.
do you know where to get the full version?? :)

@deepislandboy Forgive me if I'm being stupid, but isn't that backwards? A Bb/C is a Bb chord with a C in the bass: Bb-D-F, but with C at the bottom?
philWynk 11 months ago
@philWynk and that's technically a G9sus chord in this case, otherwise known as a G11 sometimes, it tonicizes a Cmaj7.
