The nurburgring should not be used as a bench mark for cars considering how many of the dealers just tune their car specifically for the tracks design. We know the Dodge Viper ACR-X is like a bat out of hell but handles like its suspension is made out of jello yet it still had an amazing laptime because they changed the gear ratios / final drive for the straightaways aswell as equipping better tires than stock. They need to have Sabien Schmit and let her list the laptimes.

Nurburgring is NOT some kind of international benchmark. Its NOT somewhere where all cars are taken to determine whats "best" All that is largely an american myth. Outside of Playstation and X-box, actual comparisons on the Ring hardly happens at all. Most Ring lap times are done by private people showing up in their own cars for fun or car magazines borrowing a few cars and hire a Ring driver for a few hours. The most spectacular runs are factory backed publicity stunts. Nothing more.

The Ring is not a valid benchmark for anything. Look at forexample a Lotus Elise. Its got a 1.8 litre engine. Its got some of the best handling in the world. But because its got a small engine, it would constantly be riding the rev limiter on the Nurburgring. Its lap time would be shit. So is the Lotus Elise shit then ? Obviously not. The Nurburgring favours big cars with big engines and high top speeds. Great handling is completly wasted there.

It doesn't just favour high top speeds, or the Veyron would have a much better lap time than it does. It favours cars that have the whole package. And just an fyi, the Viper ACR (one of the fasted cars around the 'Ring) can't hit 190mph due to the big wing and other downforce adding body mods.  It gets that lap time through great handling.

Audi is like BMW pre-Bangle era. They have the same car, but in XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL sizes. But if you take the whole VAG lineup then it is pretty logical to me. They don't have to offer a big premium sedan for the exclusiveness. They have Bentleys for that. So an A8 is perfect for people that do want luxury of a big premium sedan but dont want to be obnoxious about it. Kinda makes sense, I think.

Road legal or not, the Nurburgring is a race track and fastest times are set on race tracks and NOT on roads unless you want your car to end up like that Corvette, its just political jargon. All times that are set on race tracks should be legit because that's what the race track is there for, making and breaking time records. Record them for proof and have a couple of officials sitting up on the tower with their laptops to confirm your lap times. How hard can it be?
