  • I can tell Ya, if you get the Canon, you better get the 4 tears warranty.

I did, but forgot I did. I get back from Germany with fried tape motors.

I sat on it for a few months, then decided I really need to get it fixed. Get to the shop, Gal say's fully covered, man did that make my day.

That's the trouble w/tape, it always needs the motors to review.

    I love AVCHD.

VLC is the default player right from the stream file, & creates MTS file.

    Or direct into iMovie

  • You must put some energy to review buddy ...

  • Go with the Cannon

  • The problem with the Canon is that it's hard to maintain focus, and looks fuzzy on the crappy Pinnacle Studio editing system. Beware.

  • what's kind of weird is that the prime developer of the AVCHD codec said that it was designed for a dual core machine. Although I think the article also said that you're supposed to uncompress the video before you edit (although I don't know how you'd do that).

  • @hobocamptheater I have other videos on Youtube about transcoding. You called it decompress, but it's really called transcoding. Yes, some folks first transcode the AVCHD to something else before editing it. Search my HowNowVideo(dot)com website and see all my AVCHD videos. I explain some of that.

On apple machines, Final Cut Pro firsts transcodes the AVCHD to ProRes automatically. On PCs you need to do that first. Again, check out my videos.

  • From what I have seen...it's the Panasonic. I hate HDV.

  • HA THE SAMPLE VIDEO YOU HAVE ON YOUR WEB SITE THE (( MTS )) WONT INPORT IN TO FINAL CUT PRO 7 HAS ERROR UNONE FORMATE

  • @lyric196969 It's AVCHD. MTS is a common format.

  • I agree with your Quad Core suggestion. With dual core processors, the scrubbing and rendering times are frustrating. Thanks for doing these videos - really useful.

  • I have an HMC 150. I have no problem with editing, I do have a mac 10.5.8 . It is not a quad. You don't need a quad core.

  • @lamar7of9 is it an iMac? Because I have the exact same OS, I have a core 2 duo and I want an avchd camera, will it handle it?

  • @bouchandre SO,SO, SORRY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO REPLY YES...It can handle it.

  • i was thinking of getting an iMac but it uses the i3 processor instead of i7. do you think it'd be able to handle the panasonic?

  • @someguytalking2u I believe that Macs will first transcode AVCHD into its native ProRes. Once in ProRes the iMac should handle it. Not sure if you'll be using Premiere Pro to edit or Final Cut Pro. You could ask your question on Apple's webiste in their Forum section. Not 100% sure. If you're buying a XH-A1, that uses tape and records in HDV format. With a firewire connection on your computer, it should be able to handle HDV format, but the HMC150 records in AVCHD.

  • thx for the sample from your site it dropped into vegas pro 10 without ANY recoding or anything rendered nicely and everything!

  • Do you know what it is about AVC HD that makes it so hard to edit? I'm currently using an Imac with quad core 2.66GHZ processors, and I edit with Final Cut Pro 7 and Premiere Pro CS4, think I'd have problems if I got the HMC 150?

(it's top of my list for purchase unless you have a higher opinion of a different camera in the $2000-$3000 range)

  • @DynastyGuy AVCHD is highly compressed, but high quality. The CPU of your computer must "decode" this highly compressed format when editing it. I believe that Final Cut first transcodes AVCHD into ProRes on import. I've seen videos on YouTube and Adobe TV about that.

I have a downloadable AVCHD file for your to try at HowNowVideo(dot)com under the Downloads link. See if you can edit that. Also, perhaps someone has an AVCHD camera you can test. They're everywhere now. Good luck.

  • @dteubner I'm looking to buy my first camera real soon, and initially I was going to get the Panasonic HMC-150 but I've also found the Canon XH-A1S (please note the "S", its not the one in this video) and a used Sony HVR-Z1U (claims its functional 10/10 and cosmetically 9/10) for about the same price after 2 year warranty on parts and repairs on all of them.

which do you think i should get? I know my way around editing pretty well, but very little about shooting and the cameras themselves.

  • @DynastyGuy The Canon XH-A1S is the update to the one I review. I loved this camera when I owned it. Great lens. I've never used the Sony. The Canon records onto tape. If you don't mind continuing to use tape, then I can recommend the Canon.

  • @dteubner So the Canon XH-A1S wins over the Pansonic HMC-150 in your opinion then? (I don't really mind tape I have a firewire cable for just that purpose)

  • @DynastyGuy I'm in love with the Panasonic. But I feel the Canon has a better lens at 20x zoom. Tape is easy to edit over AVCHD of the Panasonic. Can't tell you what to buy. Some love tape, some love AVCHD on SDHC cards.

  • @dteubner

Do you know what was updated?

Also, I've never used Tape before and no nothing about it. Is it easy to figure out and learn?

  • @dteubner Also for what ever reason when I downloaded the HMC-150 footage off your site my Mac couldn't identify what the file was supposed to be for some reason. Any thoughts?

  • I find your comparisons are very useful! Good job!

Can you also make a comparison between

    Panasonic AG-HMC150 vs JVC GY-HM100U

Guess that would be a great and interesting challenge.

  • @pollock338 I won't be able to get my hands on the JVC. Sorry.

  • I find your comparisons are very useful! Good job!

  • What microphone did you use in this video?

  • @4runnerOfTheFuture I recorded into a lapel microphone by Sony. It's a wireless. Then I bring the audio into Adobe Audition and add multiband compressor usually to pump it up a bit.

  • It's important to look at the camera and not at a cue card to the right of it.

  • Bar non the Panasonic is better

  • The colors are alot better on the pani, im surprised!

  • Thanks,

Nice to see someone competent do a quick comparison.

another big thing to point out is tapes are a non-volatile storage medium, where as SD cards ARE volatile. and when you shoot things such as weddings, the tapes make SO MUCH more sense for $5 dollars each.

  • Why would you do a split screen so we could compare quality/color instead of cutting back and forth???

  • This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for...THANK YOU!

  • Did he just say "uh" before his own name? 0:13

  • @atomterrible I meant to say "duh" but thanks for the catch. ; )

  • @dteubner (liar)

  • Nice of you to compare the two cameras... but the white balance is not good on some of the shots so the picture looks blue and washed out (that's not the cameras fault)..

    I have a HMC and just "upgraded" (or donwgraded? =) ) from a HVX200...

The HMC is very light and easy to work with. I'm using a redrock m2 adapter and the HMC has a built in flip option for the lcd screen = no flipmodule needed for your adaptors = lighter, and cheaper to shoot with adapter.. Damn good camera!

  • @ELAJUSTADOR what ?

  • i am looking into these two cams, and i wish to learn more about them. so far the Panasonic is winning; it shoots 1080p whereas canon shoots 1080i; Panasonic uses SD card with AVCHD format, whereas canon uses tape with HDV format. Panasonic has wider lens. i heard u cant attach a focus pull ring to the panasonic??

please give me a reason why the xh a1 is better? or i might just go buy the panasonic :P thanks

  • @tkwu2012 Most folks are going for the SD card solution these days, so I can't give you a reason to buy the XH-A1. Although a very nice camera, well built, great zoom lens, HDV tape-based is an old technology.

  • @tkwu2012 you deff cant put a follow folus ring on the xha1 since the AF sensor covers a part of the ring.

anyhow i think this comparison is a bit of a joke, since the canon is out there since 2006. its 2 totally different technologies.

i like the xha1´s lens, wouldnt care about the wider angle of the pana cuz for real wide angle you need an addapter anyways.but if i would go for a cam today i wouldnt pick the xha1, simply for its tape-based technology

  • I'm not sure about the canon since i don't own one but my Hmc150 is great in low light and the wide angle lens is VERY helpful. The convenience of just inserting your SDHC card on your pc/mac is very much of a relief after a long day of shooting. Just my opinion :)

  • Is this a "straight out the box" comparison? my XHA1s looks nothing like that.. it looks WAY better !... some settings should be changed when shooting depending on your environment... why is the picture blown out on the canon? this looks a bit one sided.. not a fair comparison.

  • I did shoot the XHA1 a little hot, but the colors are what was standard. Perhaps the XHA1s updated what was the standard "look". I've always had to tweak the presets to rich up the blacks, for example. Enjoy your camera!

  • Do you have a video w/ thoughts on using Premiere on your Dell, vs a Mac based system? I've got both, but not quad core on the Mac. If I'm going to AVCHD will a MacBook Pro w/3 GBs RAM cut the mustard? Or should I bite the bullet with Windows7 & Premiere (that's the real question). My experience in the past was that Windows was MUCH harder to setup and manage than the Mac for video editing. Thoughts?

  • Hey there. I haven't checked prices lately, but on the Windows side, Intel's Core i5 series should give you quad-core CPU power without the need to buy three-stick packs of expensive memory, just the usual dual-channel RAM. The i7 has some extra muscle that will help in multithreaded applications and the RAM could make a slight difference as well.

  • So since my post I've setup Sony VV, w/HP AMD quad core & 6 GBs RAM. Rendered AVCHD off my new HMC150 & it renders about 1:1 (1 minute of HD 1020 rendered at 1 minute, no layering, and similar at any given output format). I'm VERY happy with the HMC quality, lens is spectacular, both quality & width of wide angle vs. zoom (I'm a wide angle sort of shooter, closer is better). Output in daylight shooting totally adequate under contrasty or flat conditions.

  • It's great that you've put a RAW file of the video camaras on your homepage!!!

Tht helps ALOT... thnks thanks thanks!! Great video btw :)

  • That's funny you're saying the color quality is better on the Canon, yet comparing it to an exposure setting. Clearly you have no idea what you're talking about ;)

  • At 3:18 you can clearly see the HMC150 has a bit more dynamic range. Look at the window in the upper right! Looks Ok on the panasonic, butt turned white on the canon.

I do think te canon was exposed just a tiny bit lighter.

  • the canon wins

  • ooops, forgot to thank you for a GREAT demonstration.

  • I'm torn between these exact cameras...I currently use the Canon XL2 (love it), but looking to go HD - I love the "tapeless" feature of the Panasonic...what editing system do you use? Also, I noticed you used a "green" image behind your chroma key - does the Panasonic pull a good key or did you have a green marque?

  • I used the Pani for the green screen, but the xh-a1 works well, too. My system is a quad-core dell. Often I transcode the AVCHD to DVCPRO HD or SD. Editing AVCHD in Premiere can be a little choppy, but it's doable. It's a tough choice. The XH-A1 feels more substancial, has a better zoom and better audio, I feel. But the Panasonic is tapeless, has a good wide angle lens and is very light. Whatever choice you make, you'll be happy.

  • hmc 150 is so hott. i roll with panasoinc all the way

  • Gotta say - the Panasonic seems to give a more textured classy look - the canon seems to look a bit fluffy - mind you Leica lenses are the best around, alongside Carl Ziess and Nikon etc. I was going to buy the canon - now I'm not sure - oooops!

  • Yes, the Panasonic video is "glassier" and the XH-A1 video is more "gritty." If you don't mind using tape, the XH-A1 has a better zoom lens (although not as wide-angled) and better sounding audio. It's always a tough decision. Either camera is a good choice.

  • what camera do you use to record your intros with the green screen?

  • The Panasonic HMC150.

  • Im thinking in getting the Panasonic HMC-40, it's coming out september first. any suggestions?

  • I don't think that's such a good Idea. It has some pretty cool features, but it has a CMOS image sensor.

  • I love the hypnotizing stare at the beginning.... :P Awesome camera review! :D

  • I worked hard on that stare. Thanks...

  • I'm a television and film student, and everyone in my class has the Canon XH-A1, and i was wondering if you can put a 35mm adapter on the Panasonic AG-HMC150?

  • Yes. You can put one on pretty much any camera. Just make sure it fits yours. Ask the supplier before buying.

  • The HMC150 looks more film like and seems to have much better dynamic range (Look at the window on the wide shots. The XH-A1 blows out the highlights badly while the HMC150 does not). I don't know if the XH-A1 was just improperly setup or exposed, but in the shots towards the end the Panny had much better dynamic range.

  • The XH-A1 was shot a little "hot" and I used the standard XH-A1 default settings. Out of the box the XH-A1 produced average looking video. That is why most people set up custom-presets to use with the XH-A1. By using custom presets on the XH-A1, you have tremedous control. The HMC150 looks better "out of the box" but also offers up to 6 custom-presets.

  • What do you think about to convert AVCHD in DVCPROHD by Premiere encorder for improve editing???lose quality??

  • Sorry but this comparison is ridiculous.

  • The Panasonic is a bit darker and looks much nicer.

  • I check out video from the Panasonic on Vimeo and it is awesome. Way better in low light than the hvx200.

  • Obviously, this person isn't a very good speaker, lol.

But I have the HMC 150. It's awesome.

  • While HDV looks good, I might toss in that the compression artifacts are much more noticeable in HDV footage than in PH footage from the HMC. Not terrible, but they exist, especially if you film something like fire, etc

Yeaforit, you should read up on the XH. It shoots progressive video in an interlaced stream

Best advertising for the XH-A1 is Crank 2, which came out last week. The primary camera on that production was the XH-A1. Looks good too, though they did HEAVILY color correct it.

  • the hmc and the xha1 have the same sized image sensor so the quality is largely the same, however the hmc records truley progressive which gets rid of the fields of videos to give your footage a smoother look and more information so you can color correct more without grainyness, also you can import footage of different frame rates onto your computer besides 29.97 (hdv) which can be handy for slow mos and time lapses if your into action. but yes, avchd is a mac killer... unless you have toast ;)

  • This was really informative! As an indy filmmaker having used both cameras, i think the HMC is far superior. The only thing I don't like is how laggy the footage is in editing. I have a pretty nice computer too. Quad core PC with 4gb of ram. I have only been able to edit it in Sony Vegas 8.0c. Once there is more support for this format it will rule!! I absolutely despise the A1 and have never been happy with its image. HMC will give you a much better film-look.

  • Thanks. I've gotten good footage from the XH-A1, but only after building my own custom-color presets. the MCH150 works nice right out of the box. And I agree, as machines get faster, AVCHD will rule. I have other videos on YouTube, just search by dteubner. Thanks again...

  • If your Mac can't edit the AVCHD smoothly, it might be time to get a 4- or 8-core Mac. But I think the Mac can take the AVCHD and convert it over to Mac-based format. I'm on a PC so I don't know all the details.

The XH-A1 seems like a more refined camera, but if you do two-camera shoots, it might be a challenge matching the two cameras. The Panasonic is really light and has a great wide-angle lens. So many decisions.

    Not sure what to recommend...

  • Wow really nice, I just purchased my hmc150 and really love it its just I'm editing on a macbook pro w/ 2gb of ram and its not as fast as I wished maybe i should upgrade the ram, but thinking of selling my dvx, and not sure to buy a second 150 or should I go with the A1 I do like that 20x Zoom but the wide angle and the weight of the hmc is awesome. I do mainly weddings and the low light is not bad on the hmc but what do you think?
