After watching the Rhonda's version of the Marais, I still want to know why, everytime I hear it played by (any other flutist) --- there's always a different version, from what I heard Rhonda play on this video clip? What? Marais composed that many different versions? I don't get it. I want to buy the sheet music that Rhonda played on this video clip. Help.
@principalflutist The piece has 25 variations...the reason the performances all sound different is because the performers are choosing different variations to perform- I've never heard anyone play all of them in one concert/recital. If you just buy the sheet music for "Les Folies d'Espagne" by Marais for flute, you'll get all of the variations (written exactly as she and others play them) and you can choose the ones you want to play.
@principal - in my edition there are 25 variations. I've not been able to perform this piece myself but my teacher in college strongly advised choosing my favs and creating my own abridged version. Each variation has different aspects of flute technique that can be 'shown off' depending on your comfort level with the performance.
I've heard other fluttists play a "variation" of the Marais, as in Irena Grafenhauer, and others. None sound the same? Confused? Did Marais write that many different variations ---- or are these just the "artist's" interpretations. In short, if I went to buy this sheet music --- WHICH interpretation would I be buying? |I want to play exactly what Rhonda played, in short.
@principalflutist Every version sounds different because in this style of music, improvised ornamentation is paramount to the performance, so no two people will EVER play it the same way, unless you copy note for note everything she is doing. Much of what you are hearing is not on the page...
@jazzflutist Thanks fro the comments. The echo is the natural acoustics of this 16th century church, you'd really have to be there to enjoy its full effect.

I know that most of the people watching this video have never even heard of dubstep, but does anyone know is this was the sample used in "Rutten" by Skream?
@quakemath Im pretty sure its not from this specific performance, but I bet it could be from a different performance of the same piece, seems like she plays too fast
@principalflutist I agree with your confusion. This person is only playing my COMPOSITION, but it is in fact not ME playing it. (anyone who has heard me would know this.), but it has been, what we have deduced, a deliberate confusion. Such is the name of the business, apparently. Disappointing in that way. But we always welcome folks playing my music, just making clear that it is THEM playing, and not pretending to be someone else, and certainly not "me". unless it is in fact, ME.
Lovely! She has a beautiful rich tone and fantastic technique. I love this piece and play several versions for solo flute... and I also play it with piano in a Music/Theatre show about Paris. It sounds great in a big Church or Cathedral. I heard Ransom Wilson play it about years ago and it was spectacular too
holy shit sorry but wow i p[lay native american flute and love to buy a flute like that and learn to play anywhere close its so beautiful wow god has blessed her calmingwind
i was fortunate to see her perform live. I bought her CD after the performance from her husband and have listened to it nonstop since. Amazing flautist... Makes me want to be a better musician.
Well, you got it right the Rhonda is the best in the world...but I find your comment about Rhonda being a "thing" very disrespectful and a "lil" arrogant.
Yes, indeed...my apologies. girlofcj did get it completely right! I'm just a fan hoping to see that Rhonda is recognized for the great artistic talent (in addition to being the very best flute player) that she is...
These YouTube videos are great, but you should see Rhonda in concert. Her music is even more amazing in person! She is a true artist that will touch our heart!!
Rhonda Larson is obviously a gifted flutist, bring joy into our hearts and the world of flute-playing. Her sensitivity, control, intonation and vibrato are almost unequaled.
She is beyond earthly, that is for sure. Yet her heart is so grounded. She is as real and as beautiful and as gifted as they come. My own flute playing has been forever changed from meeting and hearing her play. Jodie
holy cow not only is rhonda larson an amazing flutist, but I never knew what an amazing person she was!! she spent a year in iraq teaching flute to kids in a school!! She is the most down to earth person ever!! I had a privilege of seeing her give a masterclass and she was soo kind and patient!! instead of just telling the stupid girls to count, she would be really kind and say "well try it this way."
Rhonda Larson is one of my favorite flutists!! She has such a controlled sound and I love all the different tone colors! I actually got to meet her two years ago and she is coming to perform in utah tomorrow! So of course I will be attending!!

She's great. But I don't know who's better, her or James Galway (another famous flutist).
gameshowguy2000 3 years ago
I don't know who can say who's better, but Mrs. Larson is the most versatile player I've ever heard. She is also super nice!

Get real; Galway's vibrato makes him unlistenable.
