Well there is a difference between understanding the need of a spiritual guide and truly taking refuge with a spiritual guide. Rinpoche's book Gurus For Hire Enlightenment For Sales does shed some light on this subject.
There are many Lamrims presented by different teachers in different lineages, but they are all based on extension of Atishas 11th Century root text "A Lamp for the Path".
That means there are many commentaries by different teachers or masters, but they are based on one "textbook".
Those who like the Lamrim class, will also enjoy the Manjushri class, a Dharma class held on Sundays. And, apart from that, there is also Chinese Manjushri class AND Manjushri kids class, all on Sunday. Its a great opportunity for your entire family to spend time together while learning more about Dharma. The kids class is a great way to introduce your children to Buddhism and all classes are conducted by Rinpoches senior students.
The Buddha taught first and foremost to rely upon oneself. Teachers are helpful for sure, but not as important as they were 1,000 years ago.

Lamrim is a Tibetan Buddhist textual form for presenting the complete path to enlightenment as taught by Lord Buddha.
There are many versions of it though.

Oohh.. I really have to recommend this class, it is really good! The first time see some layman that is so well versed in Dharma
Mr. Ngeow is very down to earth. I met him in Kechara before and he always emphasize on examples that we are facing daily.
May Mr. Ngeow live a long life and may he be able to assist Tsem Rinpoche to spread Dharma everywhere!
