  • Where did you get your steam sounds

  • I think all of gresleys locomotives should have been left alone

  • Seeing the cylinders so far back... it's strange!

  • @HughTheB12

They do look odd don't they, all down to Thomspon's obsession that all connecting rods should be of equal length

  • @DoctorTankEngine Thompson did have an odd obsession! Your layout and locomotives are simply amazing! Do you sometimes buy a group of say a Hornby Mallard and then use transfers so you have a group of different A4s in Garter Blue?

  • @HughTheB12

Thank you :) with all my locos none have been repainted all are as they were from the box, then further weathered. The Thompson pacifics were all kit built.

    Many thanks

  • @DoctorTankEngine So in that case if I wanted a group of A4s in Garter Blue, I'd buy a few Mallards from Hornby and then use e.g. Fox Transfers to turn Mallard, Mallard and Mallard to Mallard, Gadwall and Herring Gull? Then I'd weather them for the best effect?

  • @HughTheB12

Yep you could easily you do that.....For removing the existing transfers, I would suggest using mircosol.....small bottle with red writing on it (have a look on ebay) put some on with a cotton wool bud over the old transfer, leave for 5 minutues, then with a cotton wool bud with mircoso on it, start rubbing, the great thing with mircosol is it brings the transfer off, but doesn't effect the paint like T-CUT and others do.

  • @DoctorTankEngine Thanks so much :) That will help me loads when I'm modelling in future!

  • finally... the area where the transfer was will have a shine to it...this is great for Fox transfers as they will stick better.....then when you have applied the new transfer, give a light spray with matt varnish, just to seal the transfer and remove the shine :)

    Hope this helps

  • I spy at 06:41........A wensley!

  • @Nictrain123

    indeed ;-)

  • I wasn't much of a fan of Thompson Pacifics before. But scince the first time I've seen this video I wish at least one was preserved.

  • I note that one person has "Disliked" this video but for the life of me I can see no reason why! Well done again .

  • Anyone watch the Blue Peter special involving 60532's run from Edinburgh to London some years ago?

  • Can you please do a video on the Peppercorn A1 Pacifics?

  • the a1 trust is thinking fo buliding a new P2 :<)

  • Where was 60500 Withdrawn and cut up?

  • What about the Thompson A1/1 Pacifics?

  • @sonicxthomasexpert

Her story has yet to be told, as she has links to another class of Pacifics ;-)

    Don't worry...she hasn't been forgotten about

  • Not bad locos. Where can you find these?

  • It depends which locos you are reffering to. Many are made by either Bachmann or Hornby, if you mean the loco which the episode is based around, 60500 'EDWARD THOMPSON' it's only available as a kit, which i had built for me.

    Cheers

    Tom

  • I see, I was particullary interested by the Thompson A2/3. To bad Bachmann nor Homby makes them, but kits are probably better considering that you can make the locomotive any number/name.

  • Epic video young man, your hard work has paid off

  • Thankyou, check out the latest episode, uploaded today, it's my channel video....and I think you will be impressed!

    Best Wishes

    Tom

  • 5 stars, my friend. i could just close my eyes and feel the rocking from the train putting me at ease! thank you again

  • Love the video images of steam trains and the great tune and excellent commentary. Well done 5 stars

  • Very nice video. I really like the editing and the whole concept of old pictures and B&W model shots. Quality work.

  • @csongorvarga

    Thanks for your kind comments.

Glad you enjoyed it. Episode 3 begins filming this week and should be out in about 2 weeks. Should be a step up from this one in look and design :-)

    Tom

  • Excellent Vid'. Love the layout nice work.

  • I loved watching this. Very informative and entertaining. Well done.

  • This footage is great it is so well re created and realistic, keep up the good work. It is nice to see long gone engines back at work!

  • @Intercity47GBRail

Thanks chap much appreciated. The long lost Thompson locos will be seen throughout North Eastern Steam....including the controversial A1/1 'Great Northern'..... ;-)

  • hahaha gresley a hero? hahaha

  • i love this video for its insight on the British railways

  • @ThePanzergroupwest

support like this is very much appreciated. Wait until you see Episode 3, due out late February, if you liked this you will love it..... ;-)

  • Lot of work gone in to this....well done

  • Great episode! Another wondeful masterpiece

  • Well shot,,, , well narrated, and very informative,,,

  • Superb. Bravo. 5*

  • Many thanks! :-)

  • Always have felt that Thompson was a much misunderstood engineer who produced many excellent machines without which Peppercorn would have had little to build on. Nice to see him getting some credit. Lovely film. Thanks!

  • thanks palmerstonian

I too have felt particular his pacifics got a hard rap due to there looks. So I decided to go with quite a neutral view.

I also quite like the pacifics unusual look.

You may expect to see an A2/2 and the A1/1 Great Northern in future episodes :-)

  • and let me say beautifully shot video

  • thanks mate. Next episode will have some major changes, including real orchestral theme tune, plus smoke effects hopefully,

Special episode out next month! :-)

  • I always say a comment for a comment..

Have you noticed the tube is a bit sick at the moment now it's flying via the new channels, I am hearing reports of huge viewer ship swings and they are not up.

  • Hi Leo

what do you exactly mean, sorry think I'm being alittle slow today lol

do you mean the channel is playing slow, I notcied a video I was trying to watch wouldn't load at all!

  • Lovely vid,

may i please use the opening music for one of my vids, i just thought i ought to ask.

  • seen as I'm altering the music for Episode 3 then u surpose so.

The music is by Kevin Macleod so he must be credited, the music can be downloaded from his website

  • Nice one Tom. How did you get that tiny plastic man to speak?

  • that little chap, straight out of RADA, first acting job... will be using him again! ;-)

  • Very well done! If Edward Thompson saw this he'd be proud :)

  • were did ya get 60500? great video, ur layout is awesome too, great work

  • it was a kit model I had made for me.

    Thanks

  • what make was the kit, like what manuafacturer?

  • Try a video with "Thomas and Friends" :)

  • Good work. you can be a film maker for History Channel or Discovery Channel.

  • Tom, a really well put together video - very informative.

    I absolutely love those models.

I was wondering whether a soft-focus effect applied to the model footage might help to add realism - might be worth a dabble.

    cheers

    Rick

  • cheers Rick, very glad you enjoyed it.

hmm soft focus, not sure my camera has that feature. Sony SR55E Hard Disk.

If you know if it has this feature then i will definitley have a look into it.

Not as cam corder knowledgable as you lol

    Cheers

    Tom

  • You can apply soft focus in the editing - My video called "How-to get a Soft-Focus Effect onZero Budget" - might offer a few ideas :o)

  • Brilliant, although I have Imovie 08 i'm sure it has some options, seen to remember now.

Will have a gander at your vids on the topic.

Cheers Rick, you will be credited for that :-)

  • Happy to help :o)

  • Tom, what a fantastic video, very well put together and informative. I look forward to the next part.

  • another truely enjoyable episode keep up the good work

  • Well done that was amazing a pleasure to watch 5/5.

  • Thanks very much for an interesting and informative video cleverly made - well done!

  • Thank you 1D84down

I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Hope you stay tuned for Episode 3 :-)

    Best Wishes

    Tom

  • Brilliant Work, Doc! This ep was well filmed and had all the SFX in the best possible places. Well Done!

Looking forward to the next ep!

    -Culdee Fell

  • Amazing!!!!

  • Yet another amazing episode, Doctor! The history behind the Thompson pacifics was interesting.

    I have two questions:

In terms of handling, how does a kit-built locomotive feel compared to a Ready-to-Run one?

Did the Robinson 8Ks/O4s ever ran on the region this layout was based on?

  • Thanks for the feedback loriYagami288

    1. This particular kit model looks stunning and the detail is great. The problem I had at first was the bogies would keep derailing, and meant alot of time with me trying to sort them out. This is probably more to do with the large gap on THompson pacifics between the bogies and driving wheels.

    2. My large station is based on York although given a fictional name, so my layout is part of the sourthern end of the North Eastern Region, so most likely

  • the Robinson 04s were a common site more on the Eastern Region, so having one turn up at Eastcote Central will be most likely in future episodes ;-)

  • 13 of the Robinson 04's were bought by a coal mining railway in Australia and they were still operating in the 1970's. 2 examples are preserved.

  • Outstanding work, TomTank. I really enjoyed this episode. Well filmed and good voice overs.

    5/5!

  • Hi Tom well done m8 another masterpiece and so informative (;oD

  • Cheers Gerry. Hope it brings back some memories of when you were a Fireman at Retford :-)

    Hope your backs getting better!

    Tom

  • It sure did Tom, as for the back its not

improving much ! not sure when I'll be back cleaning (:o[

    Cheers Gerry

  • Quite nice, look forward to the Peppercorn episode.

Do you think you'll have a "modern" shot in that one with 60163? ;3

  • Very impressed with the slipping shot Tom, this episode is much more refined than episode 1, which takes some doing. A fine piece of work, I'll be sending a PM via PW with my further thoughts later on.

  • thanks Si

The slipping shot took a few takes, but the finished shot i will admit has turned out very well.

I look forward to the PM mate, I appreciate the feedback.

    Cheers

  • excellent, the music is great, sounds like holst's 'jupiter'

shame about thompson's pacifics not being as popular as gresley's, they were nice locos

  • thats because the piece is from Holst's Jupiter, :-) lol

    Glad you enjoyed it

  • fantastic tom

do you mind if i ask what company made the figure of renald?

  • figure is Bachmann footplate crew, had been waiting for them to be released for some time!

    Thanks

  • Amazing Work =D

  • Well worth the wait Tom, enjoyed it and it followed on in the same 'real time' documentary style as before, a style that is rather unique to MR filming IMO, pretending to be real footage etc! Nice to see you managed to get a good deal of footage from E' Thompson as you were having issues, I guess it's the lack of filming on corners. Nice one.

  • Thank's Knux

Yeah, got quite more footage than I bargained for so very pleased about that.

She can run the whole layout now which solves most of my problems :-)

    Cheers mate

  • This is a great series!

I find this episode particularly interesting

  • Fabulous Episode, this one! I enjoyed the interview with 60500's Driver! Splendid work mate, 5 stars.
