If anything in his Ca Ira opera was even near this I would be more than happy. He obviously needed Pink Floyd. If only to tell him, "cut the crap Rog". The Wall AND the Final Cut are brilliant, but later solo work is much much less accomplished. If he retained that level of quality, he would now be the greatest composer/lyricist of the 20th century without any doubt. Imagine a real opera as accomplished as The Wall. He would have become the new Verdi.
@NyeTunes There are Rick contributions for The Wall, but The Trial isn't the one. James Guthrie use to reffer to Rick's hammond organ contributions, and when you listen The Wall Live is interesting how some stuff sounds more like a Floyd feel, when you see the four playing The show must go on, Goodbye blue sky, it really reminds PF in other times, something "The trial" never looked like a Floyd song.
@getulioprates Doesn't seem like *anyone's* song, really - I mean, even on the current tour, Roger sings over pre-recorded orchestral backing. Ah hell, who I am I to judge... it's one of my favorite songs from the album, and it's brilliant.
It's real funny if you ever get a chance to hear the whole demo of this. I have the whole thing and all I can say is wow. I have to say that thw demo is a one of a kind.
To vegetable man, the name Pink Floyd actually came from combining the names of two blues musicians: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. They originally called themselves The Pink Floyd. Before that they were called the The Screaming Abdabs. Don't offer your input if you haven't done research. And work on your spelling.
When he said it was a name they made up, he didn't say they they made it oup from nothing, he could have meant they made it up (from two other names). And work on not being such a spelling and reply nazi.
I love Roger Waters's voice! Its not always in pitch but that REALLY adds to the feel of insanity of the ALbum. The wall is hands down one of the best albums ever written. I think when roger wrote the songs Floyd was at there best.
Dont get me wrong the syd barret and david gilmour eras were also killer but rogers was the best.
I always thought that Rogers was the best song-writer, but no one could beat Gilmour's guitars! And when the two are combined in songs like Comfortably Numb, you get the best Pink Floyd songs ever!
God I always love his brogue-parody XD apparently his mum was Scottish, kind of wonder what the hell she sounded like that put that memory in his head, huh?
At any rate,t his is brilliant, I love this. Pretty damn good for the demo--go compare it to the Money demo, and see it's an odd balance!
no richard wright on this one. Ezrin got a writer's credit on it because he had added the orchestra to it. Richard wright was kicked out after the first half of the album was finished.
Pink Floyd was a genius of all the band, not just waters, listen to them solo, not the same, Wright was also a genius, listen to Paintbox and Summer '68.... i don't think i need to say on which albums they are.... Waters and his Ego,
no, it was waters, don't get me wrong, the rest did some cool stuff, but it was waters who wrote the majority, one could even say that Gilmour is the egomaniac
waters wrote almost everything, but without gilmour, we wouldnt have songs like run like hell, comfortably numb, young lost, and many others, the album wouldnt be the same without gilmour, or rick and nick
bazooka, Gilmour and Wright flat out wrote 75% of the music Floyd ever did. Waters was a lyrcist, bassist, vocalist, and driving force but, Gilmour and Wright made the sound come alive and, Waters was the conductor. But to say Waters wrote most of it is false. He wrote most of the Wall and Final Cut but that is about it. Atom Heart, Meddle, Darkside, Wish, and Animals were Gilmour and Wright without a doubt. Just because you write lyrics does not mean you are the musical force....
Yeah, and Gilmour also claimed to have helped to write Sheep, and I believe so much, because there are some instrumental passages identical to "childhood's end", what connect this song to Gilmour. The "Is there anybody out there" Gilmour says that Roger didn't gave the credits, but is a very Ezrin composition. And you can see this connection when you listen the first part of "Signs of life", also written by Ezrin (2nd by Gilmour in 78).
I'm going to kind of agree with you guys. Up until WYWH, the group worked together (as a band!) to make their music. Waters was the main lyricist and motivator, but they worked together to create the music. the consensus of the band is that the working together spirit died during the wall recordings, and by the final cut they were falling apart. Wright was fired by the band (not just by waters) because he wasn't contributing, and mason almost got fired because, well, he's not a very good drummer
I wish you wee right, but alas, no. Wright wrote very little (but when he did, he did amazingly), and Gilmour wrote maybe 45%. Wright about 4 and Mason about 1 (sorry Mason) but Waters no doubt wrote majority.
That was around the time of the Wall Waters really became dominate. But Gilmour and Wright made the music come alive. It was not Waters playing the guitar or keyboards, it was Gilmour and Wright. And Waters was not applying the melodic and beautiful textures to the music. He was a conductor and motivator, but by no means was he Waters half the sound of Floyd. Gilmour brought tons of material to the table, and Wright wrote some of the most rememberable moments. Rick and Dave a major part of Floyd
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Dave and Rick (and Mason) are not good, or that they did write some very great stuff, its just that without Waters, it wouldn't be Pink Floyd. Heck, when Syd left, it was a whole new band. But when Roger left, it was no longer really Floyd. If you look at Roger's solo work, it is much closer to Floyd than in Lapse of Reason, or Division Bell.
@BazookaChipmunk Waters was a genius, true. However he needed the other three members of the band in order to create a true Floyd masterpiece. Look at their last album together. Waters had run the remaining members off by the end of Final Cut, and although it was brilliantly written and very well done, it still was not done as well as their previous albums where other Floyd members contributed... just my two cents ;-)
Sorry but I have to disagree about Waters solo material being more like Floyd. All his solo material sounds like The Wall and Final Cut material. Which them albums no longer were a band effort. I find that Momentary and Division have a sound similar to the Atom Heart to WYWH era of Pink Floyd. And that was the Floyd at their best when they all contributed music together and were not dictated by Waters. I feel The Floyd were best between 1970-1977, so were a lot of prog rock bands of that time.
What are you smoking and where can I get some? The last two albums don't sound like anything from the Floyd era. (your last comment was good, except, -3 years from the back and +5 years to the front)
Dude, they sound exactly like music from that era. They were'nt using hammonds, mini moogs, and vintage gear as much but, the vibe was there. Songs like "Signs of Life", "Cluster One", and "Marooned" remind me a lot of "Shine of you Crazy Diamond". The sound of Floyd had always been the same, just progressed with experience and technology. No Floyd album sounds like the one before it, same style though. But The Wall and Final Cut to me are the same album, the same album as all Waters solo shit.
your comment does not make any sense. My taste in music is fucking great, I dont listen to anything even close to pop or in other words Madonna. I am a progressive rock addict and a metalhead, so dont insult me for being honest a band I loved since I was a little kid (PINK FLOYD). I like many bands and may kinds of music, but no rap, r&b,techno, pop, disco, country, or punk for me, I hate that shit....
Gilmour has some synths? I have no clue where you are getting these views and ideas from, expessially when you speak of Gilmour. The man is very down to earth and the least bit arrogant. Roger was an asshole, all 3 members of Floyd all said that about him. Gilmour made music while Waters wrote the same political, war infested, whiney ass album as The Wall and Final Cut for the rest of his career. Gilmour at tried different things and, they all turned out brilliant musically. My opinion though...
Dude, Waters was not the keyboardist like Wright was, and guitarist like Gilmour was. And he was not the voice behind a lot of the Floyd songs. Waters had vision and drive but, he was lacking honest soul and, musical atmosphere. It was Gilmour and Wright, expessially Wright that made the music trully come alive. Without them 2 guys in the band Pink Floyd would be lost, Waters would have no credibility, and Gilmour deserves way more credit then Waters gave him.
To me the greatest music in Floyd and solo by the members was done with Gilmour and Wright at the table dishing out their vision and sound. The Wall and Final Cut to me are fantastic albums for what they are but, they are by no means in my top 5 Floyd albums. I like everything from Atom Heart to Animals, and The Division Bell. Momentary was great also....
@SephynnXx You are right but Roger wrote almost Wish you were here and Animals, Gilmour made 90% Dogs but Dogs is one half of the album, so he wrote 50% of Animals. But Roger lyrics are more totally from him since Dark Side.
@SephynnXx they worked together as a team until 1979 where wright departed but in the beggining it was syd who also was the inspiring force behind the floyd through the end
@SephynnXx - You forgot to add - Waters played acoustic guitar made plenty of tape sound effects, VCS 3 and production work. Water's acoustic Time demo and Money demo drafts were certainly a strong base and idea. So a little more than just writing lyrics. It's no secret that the rest of the bands musical contributions and improvisations were plastered all over the songs that Waters had wrote the base and all lyrics for. Songs from Dark side of the Moon, to Animals and so on. : )
I really like this version for some reason, espically the judges part.

No, I guess It's Bob Ezrin, and I'm almost shure, because he co-written the song with Waters. So, it's 99% to be Ezrin.
