I agree New Scientist doesn't do a great job of providing descriptions in the video or YouTube page about what's going on in its videos, but if you read the article they link to and are into hypnotism, this video is actually pretty interesting because you get to see the hypnotic state instead of just reading about it in the article.

What these "scientists" don't seem to understand is that this facial expression is not specific to hypnotism, and so this test is flawed and inconclusive at best.

There is another common activity that shares this same facial expression but that has little to do with hypnotism: this is same expression people take on when they are being fucked up the ass by a large penis.

A real hypnotic state is more like a relaxed meditative state, sometimes you become so relaxed you fall asleep, but you are still conscious of everything. it's not some on and off switch like some kind of robot

Let me say right from the get-go I don't think anything magical or spiritual is going on. It's more like the power of persuasion or psychological intuition. I admit I don't know. I grew up in a small town couscous about outsiders and during a grad ceremony a hypnotist made a few of my closest friends do weird shit they can't remember doing (sober).
