  • when i saw this i looked at the comments and everyone said you can find him in guinea...So he might know where i can can get onboard the Rusalka. :)

  • Upgrade to modern instruments.

  • Genius!

  • what a groove!

  • awsome

  • I guess this guy doesn't have much else to do in his free time.

  • is this purely west african music? not influenced by western music at all? because it sounds quite complex. 3:19 is awesome

  • @ceilingkatt because it COULDN'T POSSIBLY be complex unless western culture had influenced it. you're a fucking idiot.

  • @asusbagel woah

  • @ceilingkatt it's pure West African because it' mention in the epic of Sanjata, which is the tale of the rise of the Mali empire.

  • woah.

  • wow!

  • Impressive indeed. I wonder if that is the "only" way of playing that instrument as the keys range from low to high from his right to left, thus this is a reversal of how we are used to the notes lined up on pianos/chromatic beater instruments here in the west.

  • Wow... this is amazing.

  • Wow, it's amazing... Congratulations guy.

  • Vous etes un vrai maitre du balafon!

  • balafon!baluda!

  • amazing

  • super! what else to say??

  • C'est très bon! Bon travail!! =D

J'aime le balafon et sa musique!

  • BALAFONE IS FATHER TO XYLAPHONE

  • This looks the true beggining of jazz

  • Just incredible. Makes my smile bigger than his! Thanks for posting this!

  • WONDERFUL*****

  • this is just a wonderful instrument!

i'm so glad i bumped into it :)

  • i foli kadi

  • So sweet!!!!

  • just Won-der-ful.

  • There aren't enough stars available to rate this. Brilliant is too dull a word for this performance. So glad I got to see this! Have always loved any music of the Dioubate clan...

    double-WOW.

  • Very nice.

  • wepaaa!!!!

  • ce balafon vien de Ginea...j'habite ici aux etas unit mais je vien dus zaire. Je joux je joux le Djembe, Djun Djun est le Balafon. Th high notes are coming from his left side not his right. I've been playin since i was about 5 years young so i know what im talking about... Dioubates (all of them) are mad dope though...and this dude is deff dope. Much love to my African people.

  • whether a player uses his right hand to play low notes is dependent upon how his teacher taught him. It doesn't matter what his dominant hand is.

  • i just watched another balafon vid where two people play facing each other. one sits traditional (left low notes) the other left high notes. great players too.

  • The guy is left handed, the balafon has about the same tuning as a piano and as you can hear and see he play's his instrument with the low tones on his right site.Would be nice for a lefthanded pianoplayer when it,s possible to do the same with his instrument

  • this is weird, it looks like a marimba but as the player moves to his left the piathc's get higher instead of lower. O.O WEIRD.

  • maybe he is left handed player

  • what the crap are you talking about. it doesnt matyter if your right or left handed.

  • it's a balafon (Mandinka balafon) ...not a mbira. the tuning is totally different!!!

  • plz tell me you know what your talking about. because i want a legitmate answer. do you play the balfon?

  • I have a balafon, and did some training in Guinea, and its the same - the higher pitched notes are to the left with the bass notes to the right.

Of course if you go and sit around the other side (left handed player) then that is reversed, as the other poster mentioned.

I dont know anything about Marimba though so I dont know how it compares.

    Mr.Will

  • oh for a marimba, it doesnt matter if your right or left handed. higher notes always are to your right and lower notes are to your left.

  • Lol, you mean to say 'It's a balafon, not a marimba.'

a mbira is a totally different instrument; doesn't resemble a balafon or a marimba in the slightest.

Anyway, Alya is a fantastic player. Thanks for sharing!

  • the instruments (marimba and balafon) speak two different languages. the Balafon being played here is what we call a MANDING BALAFON....(native to Mande)

Marimba is native to Southern Africa

  • I know. I was merely correcting the user who confused a marimba for an mbira (the Zimbabwean thumg piano).

Anyway, I agree that the two instruments speak different languages, but I believe you are wrong about the origins of the Marimba. From what I've read, it's a South American instrument, not an African one.

  • its said that marimba was brought to south america by africans slaves in the 16 century,or by pre columbian african contact

  • That's fair. Would you then call the Spanish guitar an Arabian invention because it's mother, the lute, comes from Arabia?

  • The balafon and the latinamerican marimba are two different instruments.

  • are they?

  • Marimba descends from balafon.

  • ofc they are, marimba still follows the scheme of a piano, with the same #and b and so on, while there's no such thing on a balafon :o

  • @bhaal1 Of course, it's in 7-edo.

  • This video does the sound of the Balafon no justice. In real life, they sound absolutely incredible, unrealistic almost. Incredible playing though, this guy's amazing

  • Ca a l'air facile et Alya a l'air de bien s'amuser.

    Belle maîtrise. Bravo !

Merci pour ce beau voyage en Guinée.

  • Wow, this instrument sounds so 'Goood' it sounds like a Steel Drum to me. 6-12-07.
