  • nice one,thanks!

  • thank you very much bro ;)

  • thank you very much!

anyway, I have a question. I wonder if you can help me. so I move several files from my internal hardisk to the external ones. then I eject the external hardisk after I moved the files. but when I connect the external hardisk back, the files that I moved are either corrupt or missing. this happened after my mac freezes several days ago. do you have any idea what's wrong? thank you for anyone who's willing to answer.

  • Fucking finally, someone with a brain. Cheers

  • thankyou mate.. you saved me hours and it people like you who make this community better everyday.. thankyou

  • thanks for a sensible, fast, concise explanation. Has fixed my problem. regards, Bernhard

  • How much gigabytes can u transfer or does it matter ?

  • Thank you so much. I got my external hard drive about a year or two ago. Today I was just cleaning it out but the guy that sold it too me for some reason only used it compatible on mac. So many times I had to print something, I would have to save it on a flash drive or cd, which is not good because I am into design & a lot of print places have pc's. I cant wait till its compatible with both. Just waiting for my files to load onto my computer first.Thank you a bunch!:)

  • If i use my hd for both, can i use it for time machine backup my mac ?

    Thx

  • Ok cool, did that. Now I can't use the drive as my Time Machine backup. Time Machine setup tells me to format the drive as "MAC OS Extended - Journaled".

Do I have to use a MAC only drive as my backup? Any way I can have both?

  • Thank you so much dude. You're a legend, right under Gandhi.

  • Hey everyone, does anyone know why my external HD reads and writes to PC, but can only read on a mac? On the mac, I can access the files and even copy them to anywhere on the mac, but I can not send files from mac to the HD. I'm seeking this info because I shoot a lot of video at work and need to be able to edit at home as well. Thanks!

  • @Detox1304

Try Paragon NTFS for MAC OS

  • Does this work on 2TB hard drives as well? Cause I was told that the limit for reformatting using disk utility is 1TB, but the person's not sure either......

  • iT TOOK ME 3 HOURS TO FIND A STRAIGHT ANSWER!!! i love you man....

  • Thank you so much for the excellent explanation and easy to follow. FYI: I was not able to complete the process the first time. Then I unplugged an additional external drive that happened to be plugged in--and the process worked.

  • Thanks mate, great and easy explanation.

  • Format it as exFat is bettter

  • I thought that FAT is only readable/writable for PCs? And thought that you had to format the HDD to NTFS for Mac/PC access? Can anyone confirm what I've specified? Thx.

  • why this didn't come in my search first, I'll never know. It's short, to the point, and accurate. What more an you ask for? Thanks, internetdreamin!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Now i can finally use this HD without stupid smartware!

  • ok thank GOD FOR YOU!!! but can you please answer me one question. can the formatted hard drive work for a ps3 i'm trying to upgrade my ps3's hard drive and i need to back it up first it's not working any advice? thanks

  • @OneHitKill91

hi, with regards to your ps3, its all done with the options on the console,

basically u need an external hard drive to back back your data, then put in the new hard drive,

it will automatically install ps3 files,, then plug ur external drive, it will reinstall all your files

  • i don't know for sure but, when i had Tiger, i seemed to format every external storage into extended journaled, but PC could read all of them.

    Now they just won't.

BTW, great video, str8 to the point!

  • so if i do this i can both use the data from a pc to a mac and mac to pc, for instance if i were to do mp3s from my mac like itunes for example, now can i transfer all of my mp3s that are all from my itunes onto a pc, and would that go the same way vis versa.,

  • This is quick, concise, and painless. Thank you so much!

  • Thank u bro, so clear..

  • Such a simple explanation. Thanks!

  • nice just bought my external and i need to pull all kinds of music and videos between both mac/pc to my external thanks for the video!

  • Thank you! Helped me a great deal! :D

  • GREAT!!!

  • Thanks!!

  • Hey Guys, thanks for the comments! Sorry it took awhile for me to respond, but as far as I know 4GB is the maximum transfer on FAT32. For you guys that are trying to upload files that are more than 4GB my only suggestion is to try to split the files up or compress them (which will take a ton of time).

Thanks again everyone, I hope to be making some more videos.

  • @internetdreamin

    have you tryied exfat?

i read in many post's that handle files more than 4gb but i dont understand many things....i am trying this out now but i dont have a file yet to test it....

  • do games work with it?

  • Thank you!!! have been looking for an answer for a couple of days...

  • very helpful, cheers.

  • Agreed. An excellent rundown

  • holy balls. thank you.

  • tks! help me a lot and save me a some time

  • But with FAT 32 format, you can only transfer files that are 4GB or smaller...

  • THANKS DUDE> STRAIGHT TO THE POINT>SIMPLE. :)

  • you should be compensated for how simple you make it. thanks

  • HOW DO YOU TRANSFER FILES LARGER THAN 4GB TO "THAT" EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE???

    ANYONE PLEASE HELP!!!

  • You need to do tutorials on EVERYTHING YOU KNOW about Macs!

  • Jesus titty fucking Christ. I browsed forums for an hour reading about how impossible this task is meant to be. You, sir, are a legend. Thanks heaps!

  • thanks heaps man! i was just about to tell my sis and bro to get their own fricking hard drives lol

  • your a bloody genius and you just saved me 100 australian dollars :D

  • when i connect my hardrive nothing show up how can i find it on the computer help please

  • THANK YOU! Fuck, it's so damn hard to just get a clear answer about this, BUT HERE IT IS RIGHT HERE. This should be the top search for "formatting new hard drive for mac/pc"

  • thanks ima keep my mp3s till im 50

  • thanks!

  • nice and short! thank you!!!

  • best tut on this subject super quick not talking about who u are and y u got into mac and all that crap. Good stuff thanks

  • I tried this with a 500GB WD Passport external drive. Neither Windows Vista nor Windows 7 were be able to see drive after formatting it as MS-DOS via a MAC. I had to reinitialise and reformat the disc as NTFS to make it usable again from a PC. Be careful!!!

  • thanks alot!

  • i did that.... it worked for a few days then when i plugged it into my PC it only gave me shortcuts.... is there a way to permanently fix it ????

  • I did what most of you guys are saying to do with the MSDOS thing. But it doesn't work for files that are larger than 4GB. What can i do to solve this problem????

    It's really annoying.

    Thanks.

  • @italy1999 i wanna buy portable hdd for mac and format to use on pc, if i do that can i transfer files larger than 4 gb?

  • @marko86mk yes you can. It woks man trust me, if you get the program Macdrive8, you'll have no more problems.
