when they say 10% make it through to be a pj that is no lie. every month hundreds try out to be a pj and maybe out of a hundred only ten people might make it. your very athletic guys that have a lot of heart in it make it to maybe 4 months in. just because you make the cut doesnt mean your going to last. its the highest cut rate in the military. your better chances of going sf or marine recon.
@jakebb5 then you should know that pj's aren't a direct combatant force like SEALs are. While SEALs sometimes do go in to recover personnel, they are not the same. pj's focus on personnel recovery while SEALs focus on counter-terrorism, direct action, recon, etc.
@jakebb5 but since im not really too worried about arguing about this, hows SOWT going? Im entering my first year of college pretty soon here and i cant decide whether to do ROTC and enter as an officer(CRO or STO) or enlist after i graduate and go through the PJ pipeline as an NCO
going to be tougher because you will be incharge of the team make sure you have dynamite cals pushups sit ups pullups water con water con water con that what makes everyone quite while the task isnt hard all the pressure the thought of not being able to breath tears people mentally
Not the same. Not even close. Don't get me wrong, rescue swimmers are great folks, but they are not even similar to PJ's, only one aspect of the PJ's.
@pallyhealz572 No. Army Rangers do perform similar tasks as the Green Berets, but the Green also provide humanitarian assistance, such as medical care, to people in foreign lands. The Green also use heavy propaganda to convince locals in foreign countries to rise up against their government. I've read that Green Berets have also trained locals to fight in combat, like in Vietnam. To be a Green Beret takes more training and it is a requirement for GBs to learn a foreign language.
@GxRATE Wish you the best of luck!! Just remember take it one day at a time, don't look down the road and fret on upcoming training event's you will get overwhelmed. It's gonna suck bad for a long time, just keep a positive attitude and stay focused!! Use this time to eat healthy and train hard everyday, GOOD LUCK!!!

If anyone is interested in becoming a PJ you may already know of specialtactics (.) com. But for you guys who don't it has a ton of great information although the forum mods are a little short with people sometimes. Best of luck, I'm going into the Airforce in a year. I want to be one of the 8 left standing after indoc.
don't get me wrong guys, by all means go for it if you believe in it, but training to be a pj is no joke. last i checked pj's had a 90 percent drop out rate, and they won't just fail you for the physical aspect, they can fail you for almost anything. just the training takes over two years. i wouldn't sign up for that job unless you know for a fact that you're the most bad ass, most intelligent dude in the county you live in.
ive been want to me in the military since 5 th grade im in the 10th now and wanted to be a pj for a year or so im still just a little unclear how i get into this kinda stuff after college can sum1 inform me?
@icantjerk99 The biggest thing is being able to pass the PAST test. It's a 500 meter swim, 2 20 meter underwater swims, mile and a half run, push ups, sit ups and pull ups.
I'm training right now to get that done and hopefully go into PJ sometime this year.
ust curious...why do alot of SEALs, Rangers, SF, Marine Recon guys swith over to Air Force special ops. i mean, it seems like PJ's,CCT's, and Combat Weather guys have a VERY specific mission set. as in search and rescue, air traffic control and fire power, and weather readings respectively. seems really specific to me, while the other SOF have alot more tasks.
@marleynrs8 Air Force Pararescuemen is what SEALs want to be when they grow up. First off the Pararescuemen are extremely high demanding in physical training and medical training. Their goals are very specific, BUT they are also the highest standard of goals you will find in the military. They deal with all the same things other Special Forces do PLUS more. I'm joining this summer to be a PJ
@Paymon5 yeah, ive heard their selection has a 90% dropout rate. good luck man, just don't quit. most dropouts quit. if you get injured that's just unluckiness. anyways, i was just wondering why one would make the switch. i dont think they do more than the other SOF, they really just do personnel recovery, and in the current conflict that's basically alot of medevacs. however, this i do know. when other SOF need to be rescued, PJ's are the go-to guys. maybe thats why.
@marleynrs8 That's very true. However. They may not do MORE then other SOF, but they ARE more physically demanding. Causing U.S Military men (who are hungry for challange) to want to join.
@Paymon5 thinking about it. my eyesight's too bad, though. i might do the Army Ranger thing, and when that enlistments up get eye surgery and decide what to do from there, maybe stay, maybe SF, maybe PJ's.
@marleynrs8 Keep in mind that PRK eye surgery is the only kind that the Airforce accepts for PJ recruits. I face the same problem and you have to wait a year after having the surgery.
@LHSStuntman yeah im definitely gonna do some research. my eye doctor says he wouldn't recommend eye surgery until my early 20s, but we'll see. haha i cant see shit without my contacts/glasses.
@marleynrs8 Yea bro I feel ya. I've been blind as a bat since I was a kid. Probably caused by too much videogames at close range lol. I'm just worried about spending all that money to fix my eyes and then being disqualified from PJ training due to some other random lack of perfection.
@LHSStuntman yeah man. unless you have some medical condition that disqualifies you, you'd be good to go. you can get it done by civilian doctors before you join, but the military would pay for it if you're in. explore all your options tho. if the surgery cant be done till later, you could still do TACP, SOWT, SERE, and then cross train, or you could serve in another branch until you're old enough. me, im not even 100% on PJs. im still 15, so im looking through many different jobs.
rangers, seals, delta force, and whatever all rolled into one?absolutely and then some.adamrecon, good luck on your journey to become a pj. as far as the 'six yr old' comment-have you read some of the posts your fellow marines write?the person referring to those posters as 6 yr olds was being kind.
I am a current marine and am getting out to go pj. I wouldent be so quick to call a marine a six year old. it is hard to beat a Marine grunt unit in combat..

yeah im sure there awesome and all but between sf and marine recon i dont tink anything tops them dont get me wrong i think the pj's are some hardcore mother fuckers but sf and recon guys spend months behind enemy lines with no support at all im not putting down the pj's just saying there elite medics an 18d is a elite doctor that is also a elite marksman
@winemkr your not a fucking PJ, in your wildest dreams maybe.... Maybe a marine, anyone can be a marine, but a pj I highly disagree on your statement saying your one. You wouldn't be on the internet arguing with people. A USAF PJ Is like bruce lee and a marine is equivalent to a 6 year old.
Ok, I just wanted to make sure. I haven't heard much about the PJ's, that's why... if they're what the Gunny says and it's true though, well... awesome.
i sure hope so. a special force that only requires that is sad. only the 20m underwater sounds hard. but good luck making it man. Im going to be a marine myself. maybe Navy. I just got my NROTC scholarship in October im going to Auburn next year!!
it was a simple question . i didnt expect that it would irritate you. why would it? and what 's with the sarcastic and negative attitude towards myself and some people on here?
I'm an A1C (or will be after BMT), I'll be going to Lackland AFB in November, not too worried, but what requirements do I have to pass to complete the PAST test when I train for Pararescue? I want to be POSITIVE I get into the 10% pass margine, at all costs.
lots of movies have Green Beret's and even more have S.E.A.L's, the reason pj's are'nt in a lot of movies is they are not ment to be a direct action force, that is just a hazard of their main job (save lives)
But comming from my millitary view. PJ's ARE THE BEST.
Um hi, im in the airforce, im going to be a pj. and the cadres make it very clear that we will have to kill. one of the pj instructors has over 30 knife kills. like i said, "its not their purpose, its just a hazard of the job."
So I believe they are truly the elite of the USAF because I know their training are on par with the Army Rangers and Navy SEALS. Am I right to say that ?
I believe that every branch must have their very best.
yes, they are. they all fall under Special operations comand. but what i was saying is the reason pj's are not in movies is because they are not a direct action force, all spec ops have a different purpose. the fact that pj's are the best even in combat is negated due to the nature of their main objective. but i have taken the seal and pj physical entrance test. and i can tell you the pj's run faster and swim farther if you can belive it.
it is true that they are instructors for 2 years, but after that the can specialize and acompany teams acting as the SERE Specialist. also there are only 2 SERE officers at a time so if you want to be an officer dont go SERE
If anyone wants more info on what it's like to go through training national geographic has a series you can watch. I suggest anyone who wants to be a pj watches it before you just raise you think you'll be able to do it. Also special tactics has a roughly five month fitness plan (which you supplement weight training into) to help get you ready for indoc and to pass your PAST.
i met a couple pj's that we trained with before doing a 25 mile death march a while back. those guys get the most respect out of all servicemen in the air force. and they have a fucking crazy fitness level. they gave me and a couple of peers a piggie back ride around a track for 3 miles and they could have went longer but it was uncomfortable for us.
That's a possibility, who knows what we do in other countries, but in the battle of Mogadishu (black hawk down) PJ's went into a helicopter and performed medical stuff on the pilots in there. Tim Wilkenson (SP?) was one in there.
The length of training really has little to do with its difficulty. I would say the reason that PJ school (Indoc specifically) has such a high attrition rate would be one of two things. One being the Air Force saying they only need so many each go round, the second being its water qual's, water qualification generally makes schools very very difficult, some may not even realize you go through that in the PJ's. As a Navy Seal its obvious you would.
actualy it was stated that only ~75% of CSAR positions are taken at any time, but yeah with water quals a PJ once said "calling it a water confidence course is like being beaten with a baseball bat and calling it hickory familiarity" (INDOC) plus i bet the fact that theres not much publicity for CSAR as oppose to SEALs has something to do with why there arent very many
movies. Why do SEALs get the movies? Who made up that idea? How bout PJ's Green Berets, or the Rangers??? My best guess is theres no video games on them. If they made a Navy SEAL movie the SOCOM Ps2 Fan boys would see it and theres alot of those
tray, they were also in the scene in air force 1 where the escape pod was ejected from air force one and the pj's and others flew in choppers to rescue the president in the pod, but found it empty.
Oh History Channel... how I miss the days of you actually talking history and/or military...

pshaggy8 2 years ago
yeah im sure there awesome and all but between sf and marine recon i dont tink anything tops them dont get me wrong i think the pj's are some hardcore mother fuckers but sf and recon guys spend months behind enemy lines with no support at all im not putting down the pj's just saying there elite medics an 18d is a elite doctor that is also a elite marksman

Shut your cake hole maggot.
Your embarrassing yourself.
winemkr 2 years ago
@winemkr your not a fucking PJ, in your wildest dreams maybe.... Maybe a marine, anyone can be a marine, but a pj I highly disagree on your statement saying your one. You wouldn't be on the internet arguing with people. A USAF PJ Is like bruce lee and a marine is equivalent to a 6 year old.

"Rangers, Navy SEALs, Green Berets, & Delta Force all rolled into one?" All due respect Gunny, but you're sure you're not exaggerating?
slipknotatheart 2 years ago
he isn't... there is a reason..
kingjoe3883 2 years ago
Ok, I just wanted to make sure. I haven't heard much about the PJ's, that's why... if they're what the Gunny says and it's true though, well... awesome.
slipknotatheart 2 years ago
they have to get ppl out of any where so they need to bacily every thing maybe not as well as guy how train for that only but well
kokofan50 2 years ago
He isn't exaggerating one bit.

PJ's aren't given the credit they deserve. Let's just leave it at that.
asianwannabeamerican 2 years ago 2
thanks i just made pj im happy to see this vid
pshaggy8 2 years ago
AdventChosen, in case you have not found out what the PAST test for PJ's is here you go:
(2) 20 meter underwater swim
500 meter surface swim
1.5 mile rune in 10:45
6 pulls ups 1 min.
45 push up in 2 mins.
45 sit ups in 2 mins.
45 flutter kicks in 2 mins.
however my recruiter told me at my last DEP call that the standards are going up as of 01 Jan. 2010.
2006torridredGTO 2 years ago
i sure hope so. a special force that only requires that is sad. only the 20m underwater sounds hard. but good luck making it man. Im going to be a marine myself. maybe Navy. I just got my NROTC scholarship in October im going to Auburn next year!!
93sifuentes 2 years ago
this test is designed to suck you in. The program is designed to spit you out.
Let us know how you do moron.
The numbers grow exponentially, you asshole.
Semper Fi from a real Marine and a real PJ.
BTW
Auburn has a very large amount of pussies.
Can you you say MEOW you ROTC fucking puke?

so your saying you were in the marines and you were a PJ? am i understanding that correctly
vizcaya7 2 years ago
ya those were my exact thoughts exactly when i read winemkr's comment....
belvucker2 2 years ago
Did I stutter?
Let me break it down for you.
I was in the Marine Corps. I got out, and then I joined the AF to become a PJ.
Get it?
Marine, PJ.
I must be a multi tasker, eh?
winemkr 2 years ago
it was a simple question . i didnt expect that it would irritate you. why would it? and what 's with the sarcastic and negative attitude towards myself and some people on here?
vizcaya7 2 years ago
Nobody gives a shit you were a marine okay? your just a STUPID AMERICAN GUN NUT
washingtonboy09 2 years ago
are they changing them for sure? if they do can you send some info?
jraessearj 2 years ago
hmm i think they should get a custom helmet. the pilot helmet is prob inadequate for ground warfare.

If anyone want info on military jobs, leme know and ill give you what i can,
Indabaz 2 years ago
I'm an A1C (or will be after BMT), I'll be going to Lackland AFB in November, not too worried, but what requirements do I have to pass to complete the PAST test when I train for Pararescue? I want to be POSITIVE I get into the 10% pass margine, at all costs.
Thx in advance. : )

lots of movies have Green Beret's and even more have S.E.A.L's, the reason pj's are'nt in a lot of movies is they are not ment to be a direct action force, that is just a hazard of their main job (save lives)
But comming from my millitary view. PJ's ARE THE BEST.
Indabaz 2 years ago 6
They Do Not Kill People. They Save People.
generalkim1234 2 years ago
Um hi, im in the airforce, im going to be a pj. and the cadres make it very clear that we will have to kill. one of the pj instructors has over 30 knife kills. like i said, "its not their purpose, its just a hazard of the job."
Indabaz 2 years ago
Ok I am notw aware of that,
So I believe they are truly the elite of the USAF because I know their training are on par with the Army Rangers and Navy SEALS. Am I right to say that ?
I believe that every branch must have their very best.
generalkim1234 2 years ago
yes, they are. they all fall under Special operations comand. but what i was saying is the reason pj's are not in movies is because they are not a direct action force, all spec ops have a different purpose. the fact that pj's are the best even in combat is negated due to the nature of their main objective. but i have taken the seal and pj physical entrance test. and i can tell you the pj's run faster and swim farther if you can belive it.
Watch special ops mission on mil. channel
Indabaz 2 years ago
and yes every branch has its own spec ops.
Army- Rangers, Green Beret
Air force- Combat Controller, Pararescue, SERE
Navy- Seal
Marines- Marine force recon(rumors say that this job will be discontinued due to joint warfare) only a rumar so dont get all pissy Marines.
Delta- Best taken from all branches, although a mojority are green beret.
good coment though, if you need any more info leme know.
Indabaz 2 years ago
Hey thanks I have a keen in the US Special Forces It is a good thing you update me on this.
generalkim1234 2 years ago
I meant keen interest.
generalkim1234 2 years ago
dont forget the swcc and combat divers their under navy socom arent they??
any ways im training to be a Pj. and you gave good info goodluck on becoming one
lukesimianer 2 years ago
have you made it through indoc. yet?
Indabaz 2 years ago
haha no man im still in the preparation state swimming erry day and lifting everyday
lukesimianer 2 years ago
SERE isn't special forces. SERE specialists aren't involved in combat; they do train spec ops though.
Yerzriknot 2 years ago
Sere, falls under special operations command.
it is true that they are instructors for 2 years, but after that the can specialize and acompany teams acting as the SERE Specialist. also there are only 2 SERE officers at a time so if you want to be an officer dont go SERE
Indabaz 2 years ago
Their training is just as difficult. Some could say it is more difficult as their dropout rate is 90%+. It is the highest of USSOCOM.
usafwings09 2 years ago
If anyone wants more info on what it's like to go through training national geographic has a series you can watch. I suggest anyone who wants to be a pj watches it before you just raise you think you'll be able to do it. Also special tactics has a roughly five month fitness plan (which you supplement weight training into) to help get you ready for indoc and to pass your PAST.

Thanks for the tip the nat geo

i met a couple pj's that we trained with before doing a 25 mile death march a while back. those guys get the most respect out of all servicemen in the air force. and they have a fucking crazy fitness level. they gave me and a couple of peers a piggie back ride around a track for 3 miles and they could have went longer but it was uncomfortable for us.

We're still doing stuff in Somalia?
CrystalHunter1989 2 years ago
That's a possibility, who knows what we do in other countries, but in the battle of Mogadishu (black hawk down) PJ's went into a helicopter and performed medical stuff on the pilots in there. Tim Wilkenson (SP?) was one in there.
ironmanss30 2 years ago
Ok, I thought that's what he was talking about, but the way he said it made it sound like present tense rather than past.
CrystalHunter1989 2 years ago
Spelled Wilkinson, actually. Good job though. Most people overlook the fact that we played a role there.
TRubioUSAF 2 years ago
You will spend 30 months in PJ training before you even get your first assignment to a real unit.
dcvlehr 2 years ago
PJs! FUCK YEAH!
SuperMike82 2 years ago 2
The length of training really has little to do with its difficulty. I would say the reason that PJ school (Indoc specifically) has such a high attrition rate would be one of two things. One being the Air Force saying they only need so many each go round, the second being its water qual's, water qualification generally makes schools very very difficult, some may not even realize you go through that in the PJ's. As a Navy Seal its obvious you would.
ironmanss30 2 years ago
actualy it was stated that only ~75% of CSAR positions are taken at any time, but yeah with water quals a PJ once said "calling it a water confidence course is like being beaten with a baseball bat and calling it hickory familiarity" (INDOC) plus i bet the fact that theres not much publicity for CSAR as oppose to SEALs has something to do with why there arent very many
going to be a CRO after AFROTC, cant wait
obvious789 2 years ago 2
Your right, there is little to no publicity to CSAR. I really dont know how SEALs got so much publicity to be honest.
ironmanss30 2 years ago
movies. Why do SEALs get the movies? Who made up that idea? How bout PJ's Green Berets, or the Rangers??? My best guess is theres no video games on them. If they made a Navy SEAL movie the SOCOM Ps2 Fan boys would see it and theres alot of those
SEALHopeful28 2 years ago 4
the pj's are in a move, Air Force 1, they were in like the last scene when the prez was gettin rescued
