I don't know if anyone else sees it this way favete43, but whenever I come across "branded" therapy, especially anything with the word "Life" in the title, I instantly think : PROFIT MOTIVE. Not criticizing your research, I haven't scrutinized it enough to do that, Just marketing choices. This is serious shit, and when the brand sounds like some kind of tony robbins book tour it really turns me off. But then again, being borderline myself, shitting on your parade is kinda my Raison d'être.
I liked your analysis and presentation. You're (914), I used to live in that area! Been in Cornell, White Plains. The condition for success: "appropriate partner" is tricky. What if your partner is not appropriate (as I now believe my 23 years of it has been) - but everyone focused on the material wealth and superficial stability, ignoring the partner's invalidating, poor coping skills? Years of accepting life as is has made me unsure of myself. I try to end the relationship... sylvester, NYC
Unless you are referring to Japan, then maybe because I am not well educated on that countries research or data.....I am strictly talking US.......and one program in general that is available in the US, Germany, The Netherlands, Scottland and Prague....
@KristalynJ You must represent Schema Therapy if you are already teaching 25 of former BP, and know 100. BPD is 'borderless' as its treatments. While presenting at ISSPD Congress in the Hague (2007), I learned that Schema Therapy is more popular in Europe than other approaches (Mentalization, DBT, and TFT) producing reduction of symptoms of BPD to less than 50% of original level. I also learned that underlying personality structure remained essentially unchanged, despite 'successful treatments.'
@favete43 Yes! I am in School soon to Get My MSW and LCSW to do therapy (masters in Social Work-clinical Licence) and to be trained as an SFT. I am also a former Borderline. I have had the diagnoses removed for 3 years and have 5 years of healthy Life. I don't have one incling of a symptom and....I was pretty bad off at one point. Even was in a Psych Unit for several months---K
@favete43 It is coming along in the Midwest in the US....."Midwest Schema Institute"...but you are correct about Europe. it is also popular in the UK and netherlands...Are you an MD? PHD? Just curious! :)
@favete43 And...you don't want to change the personality structure.....leave that alone. That is NOT what needs fixing.....does that make sense? That is why other forms of treatment here in the US are failing...they are going after the wrong things...
@favete43 If you look at all the current research SFT has the highest precentage of success. it IS newer so has less stats. Much of the research is abroad. Even Marsha Lenehan said that she now knows DBT isn't the best treatment out there....or the ONlyY treatment. let me see if I can find some links for u.....
@favete43 Hmmmm......to many therapies pose to place blame on something ie; past, upbringing, parents...the borderline has to admit the issue is them or no healing with take place. Just my 2 cents.
I'd have to see you statistics. I had a get together with 25 Former borderlines last night. That was just from My class. All have the diagnosis removed. So you 250 or whatever number isn't accurate, sorry. I personally know of at least a hundred here in Indy. Look up Jefferey Young, Dr. Joan Farrell, Schema Focused Therapy research (In the US and Netherlands and Germany). I can provide links. I spoke at the conference here as well and know these people personally.
@KristalynJ I will be happy to send you a brief summary of my APA presentation, "Goal, Method, and Result of Lifetrack Therapy" if you identify yourself and give me your email. My statistics is modest but accurate based on 224 patients I have treated over the years. About 50% achieved transformation based on their own daily self-rating on 41 parameters. How do Schema Therapy measure success? Are your 25, and 100 former BP's now well adjusted and happy? If so, why are they still meeting?
@jackieisweet I hope time will come soon, when you meet someone who sees through your drama, and accept and admire your honesty, sensitivity, and inner beauty. You must respond and accept such opportunity for closeness, in which you are accepted and loved unconditionally for what you are. By responding and trusting such a person, you will vicariously learn to trust and accept yourself. Self-acceptance comes after accepting another person, who is honest, tender, and committed to you.
When I finish my LCSW I will take some pro-bono patients. You can also pay me in Gum- Trident layers are amazing. G-d Bless ya'll and speedy recovery to you. <3
Stupidest TV BPD moment (Law and Order SVU) "Oh my god, what happened to your desk?" "The patient stood on it and urinated on my computer- she has a borderline personality."
Well, i'd say there is a bit more going on than that........lol
Most of the abusive treatment and ignorant stigmas are by Doctors, Hospitals and clinicians. Dunderheads like Nancy Grace and TV Shows like Law and Order need to be ousted for this as well. There is so much Treyf on TV and online that will just further that problem because people have no idea what kind of wonderful people BPD folks are. Please check out my little project video about what BPD recovery is like for me.
it's all about "Validation", "Awareness and "education" for the Borderline. Negative therapies in anyway don't work. Schema Focused Therapy has proven to be the most successful. I have data to back that up. I doubt there is much successful data something like this not only works but sticks and has any kind of remission rate.
@KristalynJ Once borderlline personality is successfuly transformed through Lifetrack therapy, 'remission' seems to be rare though my base of statistics is only 224 thus far. Lifetrack therapy considers the patient's borderline personality as his/her 'normal' state, and the goal of therapy is to help them become 'abnormal' by breaking out of their existing personality. Once a formerly borderline personality transforms into a happy and stable one, he/she tends naturally to keep it as 'new norm.'
Not one of the proven helpful therapies out there: DBT, Schema, Lifetrack, TPS etc will work if the therapist is not suited to deal with BPDs. It's that simple. I am sick of Doctors blabbing on and on and writing manual after manual when the answer is so simple. I hope eventually some will get a clue....
@KristalynJ You are right. Successful treatment of BPD requires highest level of skills and special dedication on the part of therapist, usually reinforced by previous success. It also requires that the patient is committed to the process of change that is demanding. However, concepts and method of therapy makes great difference, given the best suited therapist, determining outcome of each therapeutic engagement. Lifetrack therapy tracks outcome on each case based on patients' daily self-rating.
There is nothing new here. What the saddest thing is as in most of the psychiatric industries definations of "behaviours" is that it totally fails to recognize the uniquenesss of every human being on this planet. Yes I agree there are people who have problems no-one denies that but pushing home this propaganda suggesting negativity instead of positive reinforcement can only leave those vunerable more vunerable to this abuse.
@21kaloma Lifetrack therapy more than reinforces posives through 'Breakthrough Intimacy' - closeness between committed couples far greater than previous maximum exprience, provoking and overcoming defense (symnptoms) until it disappears by exhaustion. It offers three unique innovations - focus on closeness, working with partner, guided by daily self-rating by the couple themselves via Internet, leaving no place to hide for the patient, partner, and the therapist or therapy.
I wish I could afford you. I have to run out on a relationship that is ideal, because of the amount of anxiety and depression it is causing me, either way spells doom and gloom in my heart.
@symbian7 Avoiding and/or sabotaging relationship with most appropriate partner - honest, tender, and committed - is typical in borderline personality, which is threatened by closeness with the very person that he/she cares for the most. The only way out of this dilemma is to stay in the relationship, persevere through mounting defense (distressful symptoms), sacrificing self and achievement spehres temporarily, until the closeness alone breakthrough first, overcoming defense by exhaustion.
Dear Doctor, is there some tips you have for the non-borderline to manage the intimacy and crisis elevation of symptoms that goes after the intimacy with the borderline. What the non-borderline should do when there is the crisis ?
Trust and solid alliance with therapist is fundamental requirement for success of any therapy, particularly in Lifetrack Therapy. Innovation here is to involve the patient's partner, working in 3-way teamwork, from the outset of therapy, so that the therapist take advantage of the therapeutic alliance to enhance 'alliance' (closeness) between the principals - the patient and his/her partner.
Thank you Dr. I work with substance abusing women who exhibit these symptoms but are told by the psychiatrist that they do not have a problem, just need to manage their behaviours.I would like for you to educate your collegues to bring relief to these suffering souls.
@NGria: Substance abuse makes changing of behavior and underlying personality through therapy more difficult, since the change process innevitably involves surge of defense (stress sympmtoms) which substance dependent individuals tends to avoid through abuse and immediate relief, rather than solving real problems.
Whilst I can see that this could be helpful 2 some, I think that a good therapeutic alliance, can also help & treat people successfully, I no longer fit the Criteria 4 BPD after having Cognitive Analytic Therapy. Whilst I am sure that the model helped to keep the therapy focused, the alliance of hope & trust that formed between my therapist and I, was Paramount. This was where I learned about Trust, Boundaries, Attachment & Endings. I don't think there is 1 right model, but the right therapist.
@jodesai : I am always impressed, moved and grateful that patients suffering from BPD becomes willing to trust enough to try to change, and their caring and committed partners persevere through therapy. Success of Lifetrack therapy is always dependent on 3-way teamwork. What often appears to be miraculous results is a natural consequence of mobilizing sufficient resources to overcome formidable resistance against change. The real miracle is that successful 'closeness' eliminates all symptoms.
@favete43 Thanks for your reply, Yes I am grateful that we have evolved enough to be able to release suffering and pain and enjoy LOVE & LIFE! You are right closeness and love with a dose of patience eliminates all the symptom. Meditation increases awareness on both of the partners and unconditional love and living the present moments heals all the suffering! Thanks
@Miikaika25 : The magic pill is a 'successful and happy closenss' with someone. Pills are to ease symptoms of 'unhappiness' but only 'happiness' can make pills unnecessary.
This is nuts how much incredibly useful info is on youtube.
