  • What magic lacks i find in warhammer 40k. combined they satisfy my needs.

  • "you gotta get mainstream -- cross over!!"

I have done a better job word of mouth than wizards has ever been able to do. This game could increase in popularity by 10 times if they decided to get a good team together and cross the boundary from geek to sport.

  • what does the JSS stand for?

  • Junior Super Series

  • I would totally watch MTG on espn, im trying to get back into it but its such a money pit.. ive been sticking with drafting for awhile now

  • @brandonvarnell Dude i work at walmart and go to college and i play 40k and magic, its not that much. Magic is cheap, I spent 2k on models paint and glue in one year. magic only cost me about 500.

  • dude, jesus christ, learn to spell.

  • Learn to spell and get the fuck off Youtube until you do!

  • ..... you can't be srs.

  • So they're talking about basically having higher level DCI ranked pro players get Padawans?

  • This episode, if you will, was quite good made me think quite a bit ;) I want Magic to be huge, but then it does, digiprez, lose its charm, too many people then it becomes kinda a label, like, oh look, Magic.. again, or look, that kid who plays magic.. not overly concerning.

  • Magic will never be that big. It is a niche activity. It is better that it isn't huge. Sure, more money would be nice, but once something goes mainstream it looses it's charm. Magic is kind of like soccer... Both are fun to play for almost everyone, but you have to be pretty hardcore to be a consistent spectator. They should just webcast and link the video from the sites. I think the average player today spends more money for online cards. TV as we know it will be dead soon anyway.

  • magic the gathering is the worlds biggest collectable card game, it out sells pokemon ccg, its printed in a stupid amount of languages. Thats like saying macdonalds will never enter the car market, thats because it dominates its sector and is happy doing that

  • Great interview; Patrick's charisma really shines through in the recent vids.

WotC does baffle the mind... I can only surmise that they're marketing group is too introspective and that they need to hire unbiased people on the game to change it. Maybe they do and they're just plain incompetent. Maybe a marketing team of 2 marketing majors who've never heard of it, 2 majors who play casually and 2-4 pros/media types?

  • most hilarious beginning ever. is magic only 15?... super choice of music for chapins start lol. whats the name of the song?

  • Paper Planes by M.I.A.

  • lol i would love to see MTG on ESPN!

  • Didn't work last time, won't work this time.

  • You'll need to go back in time a few years, it's been done.

  • and it was KEWL!!!

  • Fantasty magic NEEDS TO HAPPEN EVAN OHH EMMM GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • I have a question for you if a planeswalker is a nather player if you play a card that say target gains x life, can you target that planeswalker?

  • No, thats all kinds of wrong for a few reasons. A planeswalker isn't "another player." For purposes of making things more clear and easier to understand, its sometimes equated to be like a separate player or entity, in that it can be attacked independently. This is the same reason that although a lot of people think Planeswalkers follow the "Legend Rule", they don't. They do however function in a similar way.

  • I think fantasy magic league would be a little interesting. As manager if you were going to have your player compete in a draft style tournament you could customize your players game styles or draft styles to have them try to draft certain archetypes or cards or whatever. Like you could have say wafo-tapa play mid-range decks, or heavy control, or Aggro. I'd dig that.

  • David Williams is your platform .. there was another poker player that talked about playing magic in a poker interview too! I know so many different kinds of people that use to play magic when they were younger and enjoyed the game. I like that ESPN idea Chapin. I remember being excited to watch Magic on ESPN2 I am sure everyone remembers Finkle vs Maher.. in the insane Urza Block Format.. what the eff happend WOTC?

  • Wow, I hope some one from either ESPN2 or WOTC sees this, and acts on it.

  • show makes me hard as a rock.... i had to pull myself away from the game itself because the scene here in lincoln nebraska is horrid... however love this show.

  • Good job on this one, Evan. You and Patrick explained a lot of good details. But with the idea for a movie/cartoon/anime. You could do some to explain the back story of the characters from the cards. Like the novels do. Get people to see that there is a world beyond the cards and mana costs

  • i like the jss and stuff like that idea

it would be cool to be invited

  • God i would love to see Top 8's on ESPN HD on my 52 inch lcd!

  • That Show was lame. I usually like them, too.

  • or you coud boster draft the players using the mtg pro player cards.

  • ok mabe it wasnt the grade idea but worthe the shot .

  • I wish a pro would invite me to a tournament!

  • i wish a pro would invite me to a tournament!

  • they should make a team comp for magic!!

  • Lol. Yugioh is fun although I did not play it based on the cartoon. Since I play both anyway I think that yugioh is faster but magic is more strategic. Best is jus play both guyz. =) Its not that ex. Honestly. At least not the jap cards.

  • Their point was that YGO reached a very wide audience very quickly largely due to the show. It's a question of marketing not gameplay.

  • I noe. I jus commented that its not nessasarily true because I did not play because of the show. The next line is jus to promote yugioh but based on the badly rated comments it seems it those people dun like yugioh so much. Understandable because for the U.S its like US$250 for a dark armed and in my country its like SG$8 for the cheapest?

  • yugioh is just a terrible game, i played it when i was fucken 8 but magic is a much beter and well thought out game, so is WoW tcg, it uses alot of things from magic and adds new concepts to make a new kind of tcg and yugioh is for little kids

  • i agree with you, but i have one question, i was thinking about maybe starting playing WOW tcg is it expensive enough to make me have to choose between magic and it or is it managable?

  • im only 16 so i kind of have to choose when i get paid but they are like 50c more expensive for a booster than magick so its not that big of a deal but when i buy cards i either buy fat packs of magic or a bunch of boosters of both WoW and MTG and a good thing about wow is that the starters come with 2 boosters. It should be pretty managable though.

  • maybe ill give it a shot

  • i t otally agree

  • Thank you Patrick, your Hall Of Fame voting quips are spot on. I've seen way too many pros waste our game with egos and poor attitudes. You have just proven to me that there are pros who care more about the game than the prizes.

  • try to make evan and chapin and bresseler

    still chapin is awesome

  • Chapin is god, i cant wait until magic is 18 either lol

  • you should do more of thouse deep-intervjues with ppl. Love this concept.

  • chapin...= GOD

  • lol @ fantasy magic

That is probably THE silliest thing presented on this show, ever.

  • Actually, there WAS a "Fantasy Pro Tour" in the early days of the Magic site...

  • The only ways for Magic to work for TV would be ESPN or a cartoon not about the cards but the story of them. And throw some commercials in talking about the card game.

After reading the Planewalker wizard comic's they could esily do it.

  • wow = smart people's fun??? WTF

  • if you notice, for the Wow statement he switches topic in mid-sentence. I think he caught wind his own brain fart.

  • magic is too complicated to be used in a cartoon... in yugioh its like "i got a powerful monster that is more powerful than your powerful monster so i win"

magic is more like "in response to you countering my oona, i play a mystic snake and counter your cancel because its above your cancel on the stack so i can mill you deck" witch i believe is not quite as easy to understand as "super powerful monster attack" is

  • That was a great brainstorming session... hopefully someone at Wizards is listening. They're really going to need more proactive thinking, such as what's featured here, if they really want to acquire more players.

  • VERY NICE Evan...GREAT ideas.love the "Gangsta" music, nice change.

Both of you guys are right, MTG does need more marketing. Even though it's a difficult game to learn now than it was in the past, but once learned, it's VERY fun to play. For the ppl that dont think that MTG is hard to learn, well it is, reason being there are so many interactions vs. poker or Yu-gi-oh, i think that are more little interaction in MTG than most other card games out there.

  • good episode

  • What exactly happened to the JSS? Did Wizards just discontinue it?

  • yep

  • yeah jss got scrapped a while back

  • Best Episode ever pt. 2!

  • Dude, I love The Magic show!

I know nothing about programing but I will make a fantasy magic league.

P.s. I love this episode and Patrick Chapin.

    haha

  • I think a Magic cartoon would be badass. I'd love to see that made since I've always felt something missing from the novels. Of course the only problem with a cartoon/anime would be how to present it. Would it follow a wizard/planswalker or would it be more like Yu-Gi-Oh! and follow some character with a cool Library/Deck. Either way I think it would be cool to see something like that as I for one am a big fan of anime.

  • i would do it too wafo tapa 1st pick

  • Ep.110 & this ep. are two of the greatest shows you have ever done. Awesome job, and More Patrick Chapin interveiws!! ^_^

  • I agree with GenericKen000

  • the JSS thing is a great idea but would pros really be that interested?

  • Acquisition task force, yeah! I like the idea of showing people that dont know how to play magic what really is going on. Show a basic layout on how the game is played and then show what is going on in the game itself as its happening step by step. Maybe even go to the point of accualy animating it out as if its the planeswalkers duking it out!

That might be an interesting video contest deal, see what film makers on Youtube can do to show how magic is played!

  • Meh, planeswalker animations seems a little much.

Keep it simple. Just two people playing a card game with commentators (to explain what is happening and why), camera shots of player's hands, camera shot of the table, dynamic editing, and sidenotes of what is happening.

  • -"Captains of industry", featuring Dave Williams, is a good idea. MTG's attempts at acquisition have always baffled me; it's smart people being smart and having fun. This means more sober representation.

-I don't think "Fantasy PT" is a very good idea. WotC doesn't sell pros like league sports do, and the pro-cards were lukewarm. Magic celebrity is less about people and more about decks, and buying new cards is already a draft system.

-JSS pairing/protoge-ing with the PT is a brilliant idea.

  • Some of those ideas were gold. Very well done.

  • Great video you guys.

  • Hey Patrick When are you going to be on G4 TV?
