  • His drums are so damn powerful

  • This matters

  • every good drummer can improv. its still a neat video though.

  • LOL..The council what the fuck is this...star wars?

  • Top 10 in rock, at the moment. Yeah, ok.

All time, any genre? Hm top 10,000.

  • The power and composition are second to none. Should definitely be included in the all time top ten rock drummer list.

  • @believeinnuthin he already is in just about every list

  • nice

  • The council thinks Carey is a good drummer. Not the best however. So StFU.

  • @rrdrums110 Jeff there is no council and if there was you wouldn't be on it. This delusion that you and an imaginary group of "real pro" drummers get together to pass judgement on who ranks where in the "best of all time" is really very silly and childish, as well as worrying. Drumming, like any other artform, is merely a way of expressing ones self creatively, and therefore is subjective. I admit that you probably are well placed to assess someones technical ability, but that is all.

  • The Commission has met to discuss the relevance of the aforementioned "council" and has concluded the following:

    the council is bunk.

The authority of The Commission on such matters can not be questioned

  • first of all this video was made of a fone is shit and i feal bad after waching it duney is a great drummer

  • the council? Who gives a shit? Besides, its up to the people where Danny ranks, not 10 individuals.

  • Not th best drummer and certainly a mediocre band.man are you stupid!!!!!

    hahahahahahahahahahaha

Rrdrums representing the council of real drummers that aren't teeny boppers that know how to really play Ltd. met and discussed the rating of Danny C. You don't really want to know where he realistically landed in the ratings. You obvioiusly can't handle the truth. tellhim to practice harder. We rate guys once every 13 years.

  • You have problems if you feel you need to talk down to some people on youtube about how you rate drummers better than them. Dude, that's really lame.

  • haha douche bag. i think it's up to us (regular scum) to decide whom we like better, not some damn council to tell us who we like, or who is better. fuck you.

  • AHAHA Mediocre band. Your funny.

Alright Mr "I need to tell you who you like, because you don't know your own opinion", which bands do I need to listen to to be accepted by your council as a proper human being?

The fact that you are a council, rating people, and then judging people according to their ratings vs yours, proves that your just as bad as the teeny bop mall creature scum that's walking round freting over what they're consuming. Shut the fuck up and roll back into your pit fatass.

  • wow, people are so fucking stupid. I hope they realize that by pissing and moaning over meaningless shit on youtube they're doing some of the very shit that TOOL protests in some of their songs....yeah, "TRUE" TOOL fans, alright.....dipshit morons. anyways, this vid is further evidence that danny carey is the greatest drummer ever playing for the greatest band ever. enough said.

  • Tool also seems like the kind of band that wouldn't want everyone mindlessly following everything they say just because they said it. I dunno, sort of seems like a religeon when you put it like that. But you probably back it all up with reason, so I might aswell point out that if stating your point on a youtube page is against your beliefs, you just broke your own rule.

Would you say the problem is arguing/stating your point? Or the way you do it?

  • you know... whats even more entertaining than watching these videos.. is looking down and seeing people fighting. its so fucking funny... youtube fights... hahahahaaaaa.. anyways, awesome vid man. thank you.

  • You guys are stupid. stfu....

  • Stop arguing. Tool is awesome. That's it. TOOL IS AWESOME. IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU THEY'RE A TOOL FAN AND THEY ONLY NAME THE SONGS FROM GUITAR HERO, THATS WHEN SOMEONE IS NOT A TRUE TOOL FAN.

  • you're not a TRUE tool fan, i bet you can't list all the song that the band has ever made. fucking douche!

  • Wanna bet you fucking asshole???

  • maybe I will. come on give me your best shot whore!

  • whore??? man what's wrong with you dude?

  • lol just because you can't list every song they've ever made doesn't mean you're not a fan. It just means you have a life and you're not obsessed with people who are more talented than you. Now you should realize just how pathetic your comment sounds..

  • I'm speechless, you sure got me there. Just a question. How does the fact that someone can't name all the songs an artist ever made prove that the person in question does indeed have a "life"?

  • I think the point of over thinking and over analyzing is what you're all doing right now.. Discussing something that infact is completely irrelavent.. Because to each his own right..??

In my case the two things (over thinking and over analyzing) is in fact a good thing for me right now, as im still figuring out who the hell I am.. But when I get older, the two things propably arent necesary, cuz ill know if ill need to over think and over analyze things or not.. Does that make sense ?? :P

  • No, over thinking and over analyzing is about people going insane over certain subjects. Much like the thought of God and his existence, the unconscious and the soul, etc.

  • Loooocas.. Has maynard told you this personaly or what? This is what I think and how I choose to interpret it.. everything doesnt have to be about spirituality og unconsciousness.. It can also just be about the small things in life..

  • God, when that bass drum hits it feels as though an asteroid could hit at any second.

  • i hate when people are like "im a real tool fan" and say something like "hey guys! stop over-thinking and overanalyzing and just enjoy the music!"

because thats not what lateralus is about. lateralus is saying that over-thinking and overanalyzing is the only way to go. so stop acting like you know shit.

    Tool Rules

  • Ok well normally I hate comments about who's "the real tool fan". But I have to completely disagree. Lateralus is about the exact opposite of what you said. Lateralus does not condone over-thinking in the least bit. Haven't you heard the lyrics from the Lateralus song. It says "Over-thinking, over-analyzing seperates the body from the mind." (meaning over-thinking is a bad thing) That album is about spirituality and reaching your true self. You can't do that if you're constantly "over-thinking".

  • I don't know about you, but I constantly seek to separate my body from my mind. My body desires sleep, food, sex, violence, etc, whereas my mind is that part that can think about things, interact with the world around me (seen and unseen) and hopefully even control my body. But if my mind is too attached to my body, then no chance. The needs to be separate so both entities can be the best that they can.

I hope you know what I'm driving at.

  • I know what you mean, but imo that's not what Lateralus is about, nor is that a good thing to be doing (IF you want to reach your true being through spiritual enlightenment) All new age teachings (old ones too; like Buddhism) all emphasize one thing: BE HERE NOW. They emphasize that letting your mind (ego) wander, prevents you from reaching your true being. Even Taoist sex books state that in order to have the best sex, don't over-think; just be here now. If you over-think your ego controls you.

  • you have said it all the best! your a smart person bro. tell them the truth. One love

  • I am a firm believer in the music means whatever the listener interprets it as. But I really dont think Lateralus is saying "over-thinking and over-analyzing is the only way to go"

If anything, the album means you can reach spiritual enlightenment, by not over-thinking; which is what many practices have said for years; Tool studied sacred geometry in Europe before writing Lateralus. Sacred G is closely related to Buddhism; the main idea of all these practices; dont over-think & youll be free

  • Not neccesarily. "over thinking, over analyzing seperates the body from the mind, whithering my inuition, leaving other opportunities behind. but I must feed my will to feel this moment." I think this means we should come back down and live life, rather than always being stuck in our own minds. I think both are good. But whatever, I don't pretend that I know shit. I just wanna embrace this moment.

  • nice solo

  • these people are so lucky to be there watching "the man" himself. I am SOOOOOO jealous

  • Comment removed

  • he's doing John Bonham's solo from moby dick

  • no he isnt

  • has anyone found any video of danny with good sound recording other than that lateralus interveiw?

  • There is a webpage devoted to tool bootlegs (the url of which I have forgotten). It contains about 50 videos, 2 of which are perfect quality, and about 100 audio files, about 10 of which I would consider to be excellent quality and complete. There is also a drum solo that John Zeigler posted on youtube which is perfect quality; dont know if its still up. Also, the 1993 proshot. On drummerworld u can dowload merkaba, which is a strange melange of drumming and audio files. I think thats it.

  • if only we could get a rear-view/overhead view of him drumming, even front and center.

i literally have never heard anyone who compares to Danny Carey. his style is so god damn unique. and he plays tighter than a twelve year old.

  • gross.

  • i think you mean tighter then a 2 year old

  • @lateralus112358 buddy rich circa 1970

  • @chip98008 win :)

  • @chip98008 Man if Buddy Rich was still kicking i would bet he would lay waste to a lot of todays players. However, with that said, Tool and all of Maynard's projects are by far my favorites to listen to.

  • This is a disappointment.

Got cut off way too soon.

  • danny carey el papa de los helaos mas nada viva cAREY

  • Is there a full version of that clip?

  • Fuckin love this improve, that buzz he makes is fucking KILLER. His Beats Destroy. Other drummers dont stand a chance against that Style.

  • Still my favorite \m/

Danney Carey is Beastmode on this one.

  • I cant believe you didn't keep recording...... he was just about to start wailing on that kit.!

  • too bad there arent that many pwnage drum solos like that of Danny Carey :(

  • there are no youtube videos that do danny justice of his true skills.

  • danny carey is just such a master of rythm fuck. and about lombardo..hes an amazing drummer i love him with Fantômas and with slayer too. But in comparison to drumming he doesnt come even close to Danny's work. And well two complete different kinds of music.

  • Holy shit... that was fucking really cool. I was totally grooving with what Danny was feeling.

  • ugh i can compare them, danny is much better than dave, dave has the double drum speed down to a science but danny is far more technical

  • You can't compare Lombardo to Carey. Slayer is thrash and full of hate. Tool is some third dimension music and has meaning. Slayer is my favorite band and Tool is my second favorite.

  • DHISKEY4U

    ??? ????

  • when did he do clinics? is he planning on doing more?

  • he did clinics after the lateralus tour. i went to the one in Farmingdale, Long Island in New York Sept 2003. There were like only 100 people there i was in the 2nd row. They banned recording devices so i didnt chance getting kicked out. He played to 2 or 3 songs and talked about 45 minutes. ELPs Carl Palmer did a clinic with him. we got their autographs. super cool guys!

  • you are one lucky son of a bitch. I would choke you myself if i met you :@ :P:P:P :(:(:( i wanna meet him and learn from him :(

  • Danny Carey is not a god. He is the god.

  • i totally agree

  • I really like your.... Passion for Danny but they have all even said there self's They hate that kinda talk. I use to be like that to.... my self... thinking they are from a different dimention and shit... all this over analyzing.... just have fun and get lost in the music with tool.

  • Over thinking, over analysing seperates the body from the mind.

  • i think it's dave lombardo you are 18 ....i saw some dl impro it was boring and i was a bit confused with his drumming ..not really smooth

anyway you are 18 and arrogant

  • johnny rabb is the man as well

  • who's DL?

  • Dave Lombardo

  • I see. Big fan. But I'd have to go with Danny and Tool. But if I were driving 200 mph in a zr1 vette I'd be blaring Slayer. Thanks R. W. Petrey

  • Dannys signature Sonor Bubinga kit. Awesome kit the same one he used to record most of the tracks on the album Lateralus

  • Danny has always used a Sonor Beech kit, until the one made from Paiste allow atleast.

this definately sounds like Bubinga though....hmmmm

  • Danny's drumming reminds me of tribal drumming during a spiritual ceremony. It pierces the soul

    Good stuff

    A+

  • this is very Bonham, awesome!

  • its not from merkaba and its not exactly the beat from faaip de oiad. i just checked them both. it is more of an improve piece inspired by faaip de oiad. ive always tried to memorize his work god i wish i could play like that. its crazy i love improve work but he does it so well so controlled. his improve is hardly improve cause of his control. no beat is out of place.

  • sorry, it's "improv" not "improve". "improv" is short for "improvisational" while "improve" means to make something better. I would have let it go, but you did it like 10 times.

    -grammar nazi

  • thanks man for correcting me i wasn't sure if i was spelling it right or now, im not much for the computer lingo(sp???). so what did you think of the video. comment on that next time if you wanna comment on anything. especially since the video is im sure why you clicked on this page to begin with. (i always enjoy listening to danny work. it paints a mirage of imagery in my imagination.)

  • sorry about that. naw man, the video is great, except that it's too short and I really would love to hear the beginning and end so I can put it into context and get into the mood.

  • i feel you there man. nothing is quite like watching danny play his drums. the kit that he plays th way that he plays it, his form technique the sound he gets out of it, its amazing.

  • oh my god you're so much like me

  • when he hit the gong during lateralus i creamed my pants.

    they are amazing live.

  • that was the beat to Faaip De Oiad

  • Whoa it is!

  • its from merkaba as well i think

  • fuck yea

  • he is the master at off beats

  • I seem to get lost listening to him but I always manage to find my way back...hes pure genius

  • this is faaip de oiad

  • You can't possibly be serious.

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    this dumbshit cant possibly serious

  • i would have literally cried if i were there..

    this is really great

  • i cried just seeing tool live :( *sniffle*

  • I also cried at a Tool concert. Danny also prompted a quick change of pants.

  • holy fucking shit. danny carey blows my ming to a new realm. this guy is a god

  • How many arms does Danny Carey have?

  • 746,098 is the highest anybody's ever counted before being destroyed by his amazingness.

  • There was an autograph signing session afterwards that was cool. I waited around till the end of the line and gave him my autograph instead. Always wondered what he thought of that lol...

  • star of seven points? what does that mean

  • it's a spiritual symbol, at least that's what danny said in an interview

  • enneagram! He has an array

of occult symbols all over his

    site- its really groovy

  • Danny is the God of Drums...non believers will be sent to drummer hell where they will only hear travis barkers cover of soulja boy for all eternity.

  • what a horrible hell that would be. ofcourse in drummer heaven you hear mostly the stylings of danny carey, josh freese, neil peart, bonham etc.

  • i fucking hate that soulja boy song. its horrible. DC da king

  • Haa great one. True, listening to travis would be hell. I like how you didn't capitalize travis's name but did Danny's. Lol.

  • Meh. Travis's drumming is pretty good. At least a lot better than most. He's just a douche bag. I like his drumming but I hate his personality. BTW I'm not saying he's anywhere as good as DC, Neil, or Bonham...And for drummer heaven you can't forget Buddy Rich. and....FUCK SOULJA BITCH!!!! If i could i'd strangle that fucker myself.

  • from salival, if you recall

  • Danny Carey's coordination is simply remarkable.

  • We want more!

  • world class? i think so.

  • wow.... this is amazing!!!!

  • That was great, thanks for posting! Incredible!

  • Danny Carey created the planet Earth so he had somewhere to play his drums.

  • Erm, how can a human do this? I'm stunned.

  • DC is no mere human, but a drumming god.

  • machine clean like independence.

every note on the kick has a resonating finality to it.

they keep getting better - what more can you say

    tool4life

  • so shout out anyone in here who pretty much feels more alive every time they focus on the drumming of danny carey whether it be live or just in their studio songs...

all things that matter can be found through tool.

  • i agree 100%. I'm a guitar player but danny carey's top 5 most influential musicians in my book, he's the only drummer I know that writes parts like art, does so much more than keep time, every second of every song he's complimenting the strings and vocals perfectly

  • and peart

  • the only thing that pisses me of about danny carey is that I can never find a good quality video of him... he is so ridiculous it hurts.

  • Agreed. That is why you need to go see him or all of them live.

  • yeah i've seen them 3 times live, but i can never get enough. best shows ever, though.

  • This guys so sick it almost pisses me off

  • danny carey is bringing the heat

  • that bass drum is fucking beastly.

  • who cares what song it is, its wicked good. ooo, i wish i could play like that...

  • A good buzz roll may be the hardest thing to do well. And his is AMAZING

  • i listened merkaba. It doesn't sound like that.

  • you non drummers have no idea the intrecate value that dany carry posesses...he will never be equaled to his off times

  • The fluidness of his snare roll gives me goosebumps. I hate hearing the opinions of non drummers on drum solos. They only judge on how "it sounds" or how difficult it looks. They don't understand how difficult some things are and pay no attention to the feel of the song.

  • Thank you, so much, for pointing that out. A buzz alone is so insanely difficult to master correctly.

  • Being a drummer or not has no barring on understanding a good drum solo. Difficulty is completely unrelated to quality and creativity. Truly great music should appeal to musicians and fans alike. BTW I play drums.

  • I agree

  • It was one of the first things I got taught. Didn't you take drum lessons?

  • boring solo? look at the technique and clenlinessand feel you can't learn feel

  • pull out Led Zep's " song Remains the Same", & watch Moby Dick...This is a mixture of the live version w/ the studio ver. Bonham was one of D.C.'s influences.

  • sennipup it's not a entierly drum solo so you can't judge him -_-

  • he did clinics? i wanna see one

  • ppl...this isnt merkaba. its not any one song. he's just playing where his hands take him. why does everything have to have a label??

  • yaaaah right on brooo! haaaa! smigily google buffs.

  • Wow, I think he is doing that snare role with one hand.

  • why do you think that?

  • Who cares what it is, for "one of the greatest drummers" it's a pretty boring solo.

  • its improv idiot

  • what will it take to have you send me a full length video of this to me???

  • from the start it kinda sounded like the opening debris of his drumming on Fiap De Oiad.

  • Yeah, I kind of hear that too.

  • what makes people think this is merkaba? have you heard merkaba? just because he is basing a solo off of a bass drum pattern doesn't mean anything. its NOT merkaba.

  • merkaba for sure

  • oh wait. my bad it is merkaba. nevermind

  • this is NOT merkaba. go to drummerworld, com and click on danny carey. there you can listen to merkaba and you will see that this is not merkaba.

  • for all n00bs posting here - it's merkaba

  • that is merkeba definitately

  • OK I rarely comment on here but due to the idiocracy in others comments , my hand has been forced. Listen to the album "Salival" it's rare, came out between Aenima and Lateralus. It's a collection of live tracks and covers. This sounds like an excerpt from the track "Merkaba"(which if you can find there is a live bootleg of them transitioning from that into "Sober"..very cool).

  • sup ted

  • haha not much...you?

Guys that are arguing: this vid was from one of the clinics Danny did a few years back. As far as I can tell, he was just soloing...if it's reminiscent of Merkaba or something else that's most likely a coincidence, as there isn't a backing track.

  • actually, it doesnt really sound like any song. It is sure as hell not from die eier von satan but i think it may just be improv....

  • it sounds more like Faap De Oiad, the track at the end of Lateralus

  • theres no drums in die eier von satan dumb ass.

  • its not an impro... its from the song Die Ier Von Satan.

  • ah please, danny fan here, cud ppl remove thier rose tinted glasses and admit this video duz him no justice

  • wut, u think u can hold a drumroll for that long .

  • Check out Bobby Jarzombek and Derek Roddy's non-metal stuff too. These are guys are underrated in my opinion. But the list of greats is endless.

  • I recommend you expand yourself to drummers like Buddy Rich, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, and ESPECIALLY Virgil Donati. I used to feel the same way about those drummer too...

Then I realised all those drummers learned from the jazz greats. Expanding your knowledge can't hurt anything..

  • donati is the shit and i ain't shittin ya

  • He's really great...one of the best...and oscar, you failed to mention Neil Pert of Rush.
