  • Mutual annihilation!

  • Love love love...

  • smoking inside and some real good music..2011 sucks!!

  • jerry's voice is so beautiful

  • TC was the man!

  • soo beautiful! love it! :)

  • Songwriting, Tom Constanten on harpsichord, and J's poncho are epic

  • I've never seen this before. OMG, what a beautiful man! I'm in love all over again,or still, forever.

  • @3k2c1m46 Yes. After he grew the beard and before he went grey and the drugs had done their destruction, he was physically beautiful. And his voice was so clear at this age. Sometimes I can't watch the GD videos from the 80s and 90s immediately after seeing this clip because the comparison makes me sad, especially when he appeared strung out.

  • Garcia looked so young and happy here. Love the song!

  • Hefner makes my skin crawl.

  • this is amazing in so many ways!

  • Fantastic. Jerry Garcia is sorely missed, and with good reason.

  • This is such an awesome performance. It makes the coming day bearable and meaningful. So much of the days coming are of great sadness for this world. verily I say unto thee.... Amen

  • Is that Luke Askew (most notably known as the stranger on the road in Easy Rider)

    playing the harpsicord?

  • No it's Tom Constaten, who was the Dead's keyboardist at the time.

  • Mountains of the Moon was the legendary source of the Nile in Africa. Not that big ole orb in the night sky. Robert Hunter was a great lyricist on par with Dylan.

  • reading Rock Scully's account of this scene is hilarious.. everyone dosed out of their brains, including Jerry.. Hugh is a complete dork.. Jerry is a genius, as usual. i can imagine everybody was tripping balls on this one.. even totally dosed Jerry is beautiful.. and Mountains is sooooo beautiful acoustic..

  • the mountains of the moon have no time, no air,

    yet man has been ther...hoax!!!

  • Check out Hef's wall of built in gear behind the stage! Hef was a stereo nut in those days, so that is why he was asking about "stereo drummers" LOL

  • This is just a set in the studio. Hef may have been a "stereo nut", but all that "built in gear" is just a facade. Tom Constaten said he checked out that rig that's behind him, and he said that was literally nothing inside it, it was just a prop.

  • the funny thing is Garcia himself had a cup of Owsleys dosed coffee, and you can definitely tell when he's talking to Hef about the serpent, I'm sure Hef's just thinking "`what the fuck is this hippie talking about?" Only a person who was frying would understand what Garcia meant lol

  • hahahah at the end bobs prolly tryin to get a glimpse of some bunnies

  • @trilobite3339 wouldn't be the first time! In Phil Lesh's book, he describes a time when Bob slept with a girl who later turned into a bunny, and then brought her friend miss september to a show, who Bob also slept with

  • wow ahead of the times. This styles is coming back slowly but true.

  • haha "so there we were armed to the teeth with buck knives"

  • does anyone know who that dude is playing the keys?

  • @TheShampow44 tom constanten

  • About 12 years ago, my friend from Maine and I were driving and this tune came on. He hadn't heard it before, and when it was over he said, "That was some wicked f*cking hahpsicodd". I swear. I'm still laughing about it.

  • Hef is so square, he just doesn't get it.

  • This is simply great, Audio. Thanks for sharing! One of my favorite, most tranquil songs.

  • Pity that wanker Hefner wasn't dosed garcia described him as very wooden!

remember this on TV here in Oz great t see it here thanks from an aussie head.

  • Mikcky HART (from rolling stone): When we played Playboy After Dark [Hugh Hefner’s variety show, in 1969], the technicians were drinking coffee and Bear put acid in all the coffee urns. After a while the Bunnies’ mascara was all running and they were starting to take off their clothes and the technicians weren’t operating at full capacity. The Bear was after Hefner, but he didn’t drink the coffee.

  • FYI, This was not recorded at the mansion, it was in a studio in Hollywood.

  • One of my favourite Grateful Dead songs...great to have hear it played live.

  • my boss told me the Dead dosed everyone at the mansion and everyone was tripping balls.... is that true?

  • this is my favorite video on youtube. what i would have given to live during the 60s and 70s.......just seems like the world was simpler or something..peaceful..people are too judgmental these days..just my rambling drunk thoughts but i highly doubt there will be a lead singer/guitarist as great as jerry in my lifetime

  • I cant imagine this type of thing in the current time frame. The mansion is so cheesy now, I mean dig, I have never been but fro what little I have seen on TV like Hollys World and that shit, it just seems so boring. No class. Like all these girls with the whole "mall" thing going on.

  • jerry looks so young. its amazing

  • The funny thing about this is the dead road crew dosed Hef's friends without them knowing it until the LSD hit. Funny but true. Great song.

  • Grateful! TY

  • haha Hef never changes

  • as much as i love this clip, ill leave it at 420 views haha

  • gr8 song gr8 vid. its going in my favorites

  • At its heart, Jerry was just an amazing musician, and seemed like such a nice person. He just exuded warmth, intelligence, and energy. He seemed to be so uncomfortable as a spokesman for any movement beyond making great music. God bless him.

  • a beautiful song from a beautiful soul--thanks jerry

  • I drove 500 miles just to get tickets to the 1994 run at the Richfield Coliseum. These know-nothing actors got a private performance in a living room for free!?!? Life isn't fair.

  • @jasonracey ya but the daed is all about geting it and you did thats y you drove that far. they know actors wont go to the show so they made the show come to them the dead had to try help the world any way thay cant and the media makes up the world so y not try to make it better at the core. you know to try to make more fair for ever one for the rest of ther life im 16 and i can see that jerry would be offended because his goal

  • I bet the Dead had some fun that night.

  • wonderful intimate beautiful...JERRY YOU ARE DEARLY MISSED

  • So very cool. Jerry was all there, very bright, coherent. He was a talent beyond comprehension.

  • I don't think he really liked Hef.

  • triple trifecta of pure poetry between the lyrics, the singing and the music-playing!

    truly sublime...

  • i love how there sitting there all swaying thanks jerry i am forever grateful for your life. cant wait to meet you in the end.

  • Thank you Jerry

  • Every day I give thanks for what i received from Jerry and the boys

  • Way cool.

  • This was where everybody got dosed. The whole crowd. All except Hef.

  • Oh, Jerry. Only you can tell a story in song like that.

  • I miss you every day, Jerry.....

  • Barbie Benton and the Dead on the same show?? Only in America!!!

  • I never fail to get a kick out of this video. One of the more bizarre episodes in Grateful Dead history. Hugh Hefner grooves on the "hippie scene".

  • Is that a real poncho? or is that sears poncho? Maybe Zappa was at load in to confirm it was as real as Jerry. Thanks Capn' Trips for paving the road for all the jam bands love and giving ways they all share so much.

  • @skyler14ful

Or is that a Mexican Poncho? I was wondering if anyone was going to pick up on that Zappa reference!. Man I miss Jerry. He was way more than just a GREAT guitarist, he was a phenominon! Seeing and hearing stuff brings tears to my eyes but I am so glad that we have it! Scotty in SF

  • I miss Jerry.

  • Hefner in his prime too.

  • Such a bizarre culture clash! First saw this video years ago - it just gets weirder as time passes.

  • Such a bizarre culture clash!

  • "There we were... armed to the teeth with buckknives" Classic.. Great great stuff. Go Blackjack!

  • since I saw Hefner just turn 84 the other day this video was quite amaing with Garcia

  • Fantastic archival video clip. The world still misses the man!!!

  • This is one of the coolest video clips I ever seen!

  • yes, GOD bless Jerry.....

  • @KrissyI1973

garcia was the greatest, long live the dead

  • Weird................Jerry is so ON! He was drilling that anti- Haight -Asbury stuff for years. He ALWAYS knew the drill. Hate the f'n applause 3+ min in. MAN, his voice is sweet!...................

  • I read somewhere that Hef's people hired two bodyguards to watch over Mr. Hefner's personal beverage supply, whenever the Dead played Playboy After Dark, so as it didn't get dosed. Could just be an exaggerated story, but amusing nonetheless...

  • no its totally true, owsley managed to dose pretty much the whole party through the coffee urn, except for hugh. He did it mainly to get back at cbs for not letting him be sound man. eventually after giving the operating sound man a extra special dose the producers gave up and asked for owsely's help.

  • @redresch in the book A Long Strange Trip by Dennis Mcnally, talks about 2 of the members of the crew dosing the coffee urn and hughs personal pepsi can

    very amusing book aswell

  • @redresch I had heard that Hef was very careful about who handled his Pepsi.. Supposedly, Owsley himself showed up and spiked the coffee pot

  • Can't say how much I loved this! Thx for sharing...I agree, not a day goes by that I don't miss Jerry and the band

  • Two great people. Love them both.

  • A perfect snapshot in time. Classic. And...beautifully performed. I don' think I'll ever quit missing Jerry.

    Thanks!!

  • I wonder what old Hef through of the lyrics for Mountains of the Moon. He's probably been a freak ever since this was taped.

  • This is the night Owsley spiked the punch!

  • This is the night Owsley spiked the punch!

  • oh yeah. lsd'd to the maxxx

  • jerry looks a little stoned...lol

  • there certainly were some groovy hep cats around in those days.

  • unreal .....thx so much for this....WOW!

  • jerry is great- er ist einfach wunderbar

  • hell yeah everybody was trippin face they spiked the coffee and shit.

  • haha check out Valerie Bertinelli!

  • @rstanton3

    oops I mean Barbi Benton

  • One of their most beautiful songs. Too bad they never brought it back.

  • what a great performance by jerry garcia. i miss him alot.

  • wtf? i never thought jerry would do that.

  • they dosed Heff!!

  • Fantastic. Jerry f!@#ing w/ Hugh Hefner a bit, eh? What an old gem of a video. Tells a story of the 60s. Thanks.

  • @#

xcbenner , whats it like being able to stick your head that far up your ass? justing beiber and lil wayne better than the dead, not a chance, well thats another media clone for ya

  • @avoraluke1990 You guys obviously aren't real dead heads haha Read his post again and I think you guys can find a little humor in what he said... It's so outlandish that he was just trying to get a rise out of you people... which he did

    Peace :)

  • its nice to see Jerry so young. No glasses, no grey. It was all so fresh...

  • Youngest Jerry i have seen to date:-)

Thanks for this Beautiful song and vid...Such a lovely performance:-)

  • this is awesome thank you

  • GREAT!

  • That was just... exquisite...

  • Amazing!

  • right u are ! :)

  • @xcbenner why dont you take ur lil wayne n go coldplay with urself over lady gagas half porn

  • @xcbenner LOLLERING. That's the funnyerest thing i've read in a while.

  • @xcbenner really, man? seriously, if you think a rapper is a better guitar player than a guitar player, than say it somewhere else. those dead-heads will come to your house, kick your ass, and parade through your street with your head on a stick!

  • @xcbenner You're saying justin beiber is better than Jerry Garcia? You're saying that an untalented gay-ass pussy bad singer, bad dancer unholy father of the devil asshole teenage teen mom horrible music idiot faggot cock sucker dick-licker ass biter piss-swimming so called "artist" is better than Capt trips? get offa youtube man.

  • @Squadillah And that's just a little ridiculous... chill man. You have some serious hate towards our homosexual brothers

  • @karmahouse i dont have a homosexual brother. the closest i have to a gay relative is my cousin who watches and frequently quotes family guy. btw im just expressing my opinion because of a li'l thing called "Fre Speche", so if i wanna lash out at someone just because he doesnt like someone that i like i'll do that.

  • @Squadillah Chill man...it was obviously a troll comment just calm down.

  • @xcbenner You also love the band Coldplay?? Yeah, that explains SO much.........

  • @xcbenner your making fun of jerry for drugs? LOL, are you serious? you obviously dont know shit about lil wayne. Your a dumb fuck. Why dont you get your facts before hating, btw justin beiber doesnt even deserve to tie jerrys shoes

  • @xcbenner trolololololol

  • 189 dead shows and I'm still sane

  • seriously dude? Get skeletons from the closet it's good enough for someone like you.

  • What are some good Dead songs to take shrooms with?

  • @lowmazda626 all of em, man, and screw shrooms man, take some lsd!!!!!!!!!

  • HAha Ironically I am listening to DP vol. 26 which takes place around this same time and this whole period is insane! Jerry is out of his mind here!

  • very sweeeet jerry......is that a real poncho or is that a sears poncho?

  • lol

  • The biggest military secret of the 60's was that all the electronic gear in Hef's wall had nothing to do with "groovin to the tunes."

His mansion was actually the headquarters of NORAD and Hefner held the nuclear war button, man.

  • Is that Barbie Benton. God I had the biggest kid crush on her!! What a beauty.

  • bobby's laying the mack down on some bunny!

  • @robps89

Hehe... Bobby had to be diggin that back in the day.

    Fantastic video.. thanks!

  • jerry missing his middle finger but he can still outplay you

  • The Dead playing to the James Bond crowd.....LOL.

  • My band played at a party a couple years ago and Tom Banjo did a puppet show. Back in the 90's we played several shows with his son's band, but I never knew he was Tom's son until the night we played that party. It's weird how I was completely clueless back in the 80's when I traveled around watching the Dead, I didn't even know Tom Banjo was a real person and the Dead never did this song, but when I was a little kid my older brother played Dead records nonstop. This is a blast from the past.

  • so easy to talk about other peoples demons but the fight is hard jerry was jerry he battled to the end what will be said of us u know..miss ya jerry what a beautiful song, jerry was sent from the gods above to entertain n teach us all....

  • Hef is a bore, a pompous bore.

Poor Jerry, too many drugs ripped his body, what he did with music was magic. I was one of Jerry's kids for a while, and understood he wasn't going to be around long.

I truly appreciated the Dylan/Dead concert at Angels Stadium. Great times. He could have done so much more.

  • @TheGranule I don't think the public was ready for more. They've only just begun scratching the surface of what he did.

  • right on

  • Just buy the Reckoning for some good acoustic Dead.

  • How often would the dead do acoustic jams and what are some good recordings to listen to?

  • often

  • first off: who is playing keys? second: odd song choice considering they only did this one more time in their career.

  • The keyboardist is Tom Constanen, joined the Dead in '68, I believe, and was only with them for a couple of years.

Odd choice for a song on a syndicated show, I agree, but it really shows Jerry's vocals and acoustic guitar. Such a sweet, almost delicate voice.

If you watch the next song from the same show, you'll see a totally different side of the band. Crazy shit, no wonder why I still love them!

  • thanks. great song though.

  • i get a feeling unlike any other when i hear this song great keyboardist

  • Gotta say, was never a BIG fan ( more of an English Psychedelia fan ), but there were a few songs I always loved and always will, and this song is one of em!

  • everybody always call hef a square...... I don't know about square .......different yes

    square ? nope

  • listen to live dead, and this is the band you saw. and yes, we're all big people now haha. in this video, to me, jerry looks like what grouco marx would've look as a hippie. love this group and song

  • Amazing!!! Thank you so much to the uploader. any Dead fan should be thankful we get to see ANY footage at all of Jerry. I am a newer Deadhead and I have never seen video footage of Tom Constanten before!! Also I just listened to DP16, recorded in Nov of 69 so it's cool to see what the guys looked like around that time.

  • LMAO Jerry just fucking chilling with Hef in that pancho! What a character.

  • la gran onda acida yeahhhhhhhhhhhh

  • He obviously had a great time here!

  • I realy dont like much of the Dead but man I love this song

  • gotta love jerry in that poncho at the playboy mansion

phil lesh's book was saying they were tripping nuts, dosed some girls out too

  • @lazulitooth Owsley spiked the coffee with acid. Got damn near everybody but Hef. Even the camera crew were trippin' balls!

  • Its made so superb by the harpsichord playing!

  • dude this is a great song and does not deserve that gay comment jerry garcia did not die so you could type comments on youtube not about jerry garcia and the grateful dead

  • One of my favourite Dead tunes. How great to see this performed acoustically at such close quarters and in good sound and vision. Fantastic.

  • Jerry plays sweet here despite the goof environment... terrific performance in the middle

    of NOWHERE!!

  • TC added so much to the sound of the Dead in his short but great tenure with the band '68-'70

  • silentbob knows his Dead.

  • Thank you Grateful Dead.......................

  • this is free

  • My my what a beautiful voice down by the by and by

  • Where's da pot ?

  • i need that poncho right now

  • I didn't know Jerry was such an intelligent sounding guy. He was nervous ast first when he messed up the name of the song. I did the same thing when I used to study violin at a recital. I said Twinkle Twinkle #3 when I was supposed to say Minuet #3. No one does music like this period of time. The Beatles, The byrds what a time to experience. Good and Bad.

  • Sealed isnt he drinking out of mug and i read in their biography that they dosed him but you could be right :0 this song is fuckin awesome Thank you jerry

  • Hi ho the carrion crow!

    God, I miss Jerry!

  • How could you with he's left to us?

He is never really far ;)

    peace
