You don't sound dumb at all, it's fine. Well, i'd say you need a lot of tremolo picking practice and you need to keep it up to speed for longer periods of time, since most Black Metal bands use a lot of tremolo picking, you also need different types of chords, for example if your first finger is a t the fifth fret, and your third finger is at the seventh fret, which is a power-chord, try for example moving your third finger to the sixth fret instead, which will make a bit unusual sounding chord.

Just experiment with different finger positions , another example would be as follows:

Place your first finger at the 5th fret of the A-string and your 3rd finger at the 7th fret of the D-string, and reverse it, so you now have your first finger at the 5th fret of the D-string and your 3rd finger at the 7th fret of the A-string. Try just moving that around. You can also take a chord, with lots of gain and play the notes freely, without stopping them, many Black Metal bands do that.

It would also be a good idea to use your bridge pick-up, which gives a more trebly edge kinda feel to your tone.

Try this:

Treble: 8-9

Mids: 5.6

Bass: 5-6

Gain: Around 8-9

But don't limit yourself to that, play around with it a little to make the tone you like. Try listening to bands like Emperor, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Burzum and Taake for inspiration.
