@pennstat Hate to break it to you, but this song and video originally came out in 1986 - they were practically nowhere to be found in the US, most labels found them too weird. I suspect they'd have been pigeonholed as a "novelty act" if they'd been successful that way - which I'm sure would have led to them breaking up.
@turricaned Just going by what's said in the caption that it was released in 1991. As much as I appreciate that they decided to "break" the mold, I still find songs like "Is This The Life?" to be their most solid. Maybe if they released more songs like that in addition to their offbeat stock they would have fared better, at least enough to have a cult following in the US.
@pennstat Oh, they have one of the most slavishly devoted cult followings of any band ever. I always saw "Is This The Life?" as a sort of "gateway song" to the band - the weirder stuff takes a while to get, but once you get it you tend to be hooked forever. :)
@turricaned It took me years to 'get it' simply because I don't really care for Is This The Life? (husband played that for years in the car, along with All Spectacular , and Stoneage Dinosaurs- both of which I now appreciate)....It took just a single listen to Dirty Boy to get me hooked...then I sorta just went backwards (and then of course forwards for Guns)..but you are right, the weirder stuff does take a while, but once you do your ears will buzz with delight.
@beastatlay No not that . The argument starts when Miss Swift brings on flowers, or the Consultant pops open a bottle of bubbly. A man in the background starts saying "That's it fella's thanks very much." or something along those lines. Tim is just spouting gibberish, screaming that he's had enough!
Don't think i could love it any more than i think is possible. Without doubt, my favourite music video of all time. Love Sarah's crazy stare at the end. All so sweet yet still with a disturbing undercurrent of malevolence at the same time! :D
@dimebolt1976 Truly great. Your final sentence is very true. And yes, the stare, then the smile turning to an expression of crushing disappointment! Amazing stuff.

Jim Smith (bass)- the most miserable Englishman since Richard Bucket;
Sarah Smith (sax)- needs to feed her 83 cats when she gets home;
William Drake (keys)- "I THINK I'M A RABBIT!"
Dominic Luckman (drums)- Lurch;
Tim Quy (perc)- Glad Tim Smith can't reach him.

If this came out a few years earlier when MTV was still good, this would have been a hit in the US. We ate this sh*t up during the 1980s.

I love the underlying negativity in Cardiacs - it's complete songwriting. Geniuses.
