Funding for the police department is indeed socialism. It is one of a VERY select group of functions rightfully funded by our government and allowed by the founding fathers in the Constitution. The fire department was later included as it too has a similar function.

There is not ONE instance during the drafting of the Constitution that our founding fathers gave provision to the government for functions that favored one group over another. Moreover, the founders where reluctant to grant

such provisions even where ALL citizens might be construed in some remote manner as to benefit. Much discussion occurred and two criteria were necessary for provisional inclusion:

1) No provisions were granted that favored only 1 group, or 1 group over another,

The result was provisions for:

Army\Navy (later AF and Space defense)

The courts include the courts, police (FBI), and penal system (prisons). When fire protection became a reality, it was naturally extended on the state\municipal level with some federal.

Interstate commerce and International relations include currency\monetary system and roads.

Their were even discussions as to the necessity of a publicly funded road system.

The founders openly expressed their desire for equal taxation for equal representation and believed strongly in a limited government. They even went so far as to separate the few powers granted among 3 branches and made EVERY attempt to insure that these powers where held in check through a trilateral distribution. It was this preference for private power over public wherever possible that has made our nation great.

In fact that is the whole purpose of the Constitution. It sets up a system

SO, then A government run police department, the Fire departments, the US Postal Service (one of the reasons for the success of America), the infrastructure like the internet, and the highways... all of those violate the Constitution? Did you not read what I said. The police and fire departments do meet the above 2 requirements and were deemed acceptable by our founding fathers. They are Constitutional.

The internet and the postal system did NOT meet these standards, were therefore NOT provided for in the Constitution, and indeed were BOTH invented by the private sector. To this day much of these functions are CARRIED OUT by the private sector. The early postal was around at the time. The internet is of course new.

A socialized post-office is not necessary and by any measure is one of the worst run ventures on the planet. Huge waste and VERY inefficient. Private postal services actually turn a good profit. You must pay more for US Postal Service & it is STILL extensively funded by the government. A total waste and should be abolished.

The current health care system is putting a lot of weight on individuals, small businesses, and large businesses. The public OPTION would just be another competitor to the insurance companies. Insurance companies need an injection of real competition. The public option is NOT socialized medicine (like the UK), the public option is NOT single payer (like Canada). The public option would be a self sustained health insurance that would compete against insurance companies for a basic coverage.

The government, however, is too much competition; the insurance companies need to make money to keep afloat- What does the government need? "Oh, the evil insurance companies are beating us out, so we need to raise taxes." The government does not need to make money. It can lose billions of dollars and still call itself a success! They would eventually obliterate the private companies, becoming the only option.

There is no real competition because of a strange situation created by both insurance companies and hospitals. They both want to maximize profits at the expense of patients and tax payers. An operation that the hospital bills to you for 30K, insurance pays $10K for, same operation including profit in a European hospital is $5K. The insurance has a "network" discount of 66% that it uses to drive and new entrants competition out. If you go bankrupt (30K debt),the hospital gets the 30K from gov.

I would actually be very careful about health insurance companies not bankrupting a potential public option... look at it in this way, Medicare pays for the most expensive portion of the population (elder and handicapped) while insurance companies cherry pick and lemon drop from the healthy portion as they please. A public option insr. might end up with all the people that are rejected by private insurers; who are the most expensive and less likely to have resources...
