@Bestundesun Paddle shifters are basically two different types(Volkswagon makes a unique system) manual and automatic. Both systems act the same way to the driver, there is no clutch pedal in the car in either system. There is a clutch in the manual version and a manual gear box. Instead of the driver actuating the clutch pedal and manually shifting the gear box, hydraulic servos do the work when the paddle is depressed.
The automatic system is an automatic transmission with shifter.
@Temptuous2112 Hi, Thanks a lot. So I was looking at options for Corolla. It has a 7-Speed CVT as well as a 6-speed Manual. So which one do I go for. The 7 Speed has a Paddle shifter but the 6-speed doesn't. But I was keen on the paddle shifters and I like the 6 speed more.
@Bestundesun I am not very familiar with the car, basically if the transmission is Auto the style of shifting is quite easy to change as long as you can find an aftermarket shifter that fits your requirements. If the transmission is manual it would have to come with a stock paddle shifter.
There might be a company that makes paddle shifters to convert manuals... If there is it is a daunting task, and the cost would be extreme to say the least. The paddles would have to actuate servos.
@Bestundesun I checked into this a bit, it seems the manual systems available still have a clutch pedal. The stock systems I have noticed use an servo to actuate the clutch also. Also I am not sure if there are any systems avaliable for your aplication although I haven't done much research since I am a fan of American V8's. Good luck!
@Temptuous2112 Not all of them still use clutch pedal. Most paddle shifters actually releases the clutch and shifts for you. For a fan of American V8s, you should know this.
@Bestundesun No, unless it was specifically built for the vehicle. On a manual transmission you literally shift the gear box and depress the clutch, the paddles would have to be connected via wire to servos that actuated the clutch and gear box.
What the hell are you talking about? Do you work for Honda? How the hell do you get any job? This is pathetic. It is manual, not Manuel you idiot. You've been watching too much of Fawlty Towers when you were trying to learn English. Why do you keep u-turning - afraid you will forget your way home?
Ok people, can you please just stop your arguing already. Automatic transmissions are convenient but are expensive and boring. Driving a stickshift is artful when done perfectly, and paddleshifters combine the best of both worlds. The ability to use auto for a regular drive or being able to use a sort-of manual transmission for fast acceleration and a fun driving experience. Plus you can downshift to slow down and use your brakes less. That said, I know how to drive stick, own an automatic, and
paddle shit is sometimes way faster and soother than manual depending on the driver also when you shift it tells the engine to send you more torch so u get to speed faster
and just when I thought people couldnt suck any more at driving. I thought not being able to drive stick was sad, but if you cant figure out a damn paddle shift auto, then just walk your ass to where you need to go.
Lol I know how to drive stick shift, but I'd take the paddle shift anyday, it's just so much more convenient for everyday driving espacially when you are in traffic, since you can just switch it to automatic. In the other hand, you can also have fun while in the sports mode with the paddle shifting.
In F1 they don't have to take their hands off of the steering wheel, so it is easy for them to use paddles. In everyday cars you have to make full turns of the st.wheel and you cannot use the paddles. One hand on the wheel and the other on the stick it's better.
@TheZoelzer2 You mean in F1? Yeah, that's true. In Monaco GP they had to do more than 50shifts! Imagine how much time they gain with the no-delay paddle shifting! But again, they could turn with one hand without turning the steering wheel more than 180deg.
@larrythes 100% correct. the thing i dont understand is why the car companys having changed the steering on cars to where its like f1. they dont even do 120deg.
@skyspydude1 Again, it's not that useful. Think that when you turn the wheel you must avoid to cross your hands. In tight road you must turn the wheel more than 180deg. That is why real sports cars have serial and manual gearboxes. We must not confuse F1 with sport cars.
@larrythes There are plenty of sports cars with paddle shifters. Depending on the person, most can shift faster and smoother with a paddle shift system than a traditional manual.
It's more efficient and is where technology is going. You can stuck in your old ways while the guy driving paddle shift will past you on the turn because he doesn't have to take his hand off the wheel
@gman4eva9 really? more efficient? because last I checked, any automatic still uses a torque converter, which sacrifices its power to its fluid drive operation, where as a manual is a mechanical connection, obviously not capable of being 100% efficient in the real world, but pretty close.
@rick664ath u dont have to do anything, it is reccomanded to take ur foot off the gas when ever shifting up or down but u can keep it on the gas if u want
they should let us personalize our honda ratios to what we input using a computer and the cvt trans and still use the paddle shift "completely customizable trans with paddle shit" sound great hire me to be an engineer for honda
@clovagZv laziness really isn't the word. Developed would be more accurate. Paddle shifters are simply better performing. Notice how all of the racing applications use paddle shifters now? Formula one would be the best example because regular manual wasn't good enough. The drivers would not be able to keep up with the intense braking of today's machines if they were using manual.
If you are well versed on driving a manual tranny then i really dont think you'll have a hard time using the paddle. A paddle is almost like a manual tranny.. MINUS the CLUTCH. How convenient could that be?
when upshifting do you have to release the accelerator, then pull the paddle or can you just push the peddle all the way down and just pull the + sign when you reach the right revs?
thanks for the video gramps. None of us knew how to use paddle shifters.
