By feathering I mean, once you have jumped the ends up you draw out to one side so when both knuckles are over each other the material tapers thinner away from the joint to be welded and this helps get the weld in without leaving a crack on the outside of the weld.

Blacksmithing is to me like a hoby...I can make a chain like that a lot faster with my wire feed welder and some round stock

How does hammer/forge work? Does the red hot metal actually "meld" together when it is hammered? Do you use "flux" in the process?

I was taught to jump up the ends first then bend to the link. Also I always feather the ends so they go in first time without leaving a crack.
