As Kev Carmody said in a recent interview about PK....He has a unique way of telling a story,,,, poetic and musical....
It's fantastic to see younger kids appreciating this unique talent....My kids used to whinge and complain when I'd turn down the "rap crap" and put on PK....Now they sing along :) Its all to do with depth of thought....When they're ready they'll listen....Remember Paul Kelly started out as a punk!! Took him a while to work out which direction he would go....
Paul Kelly writes the most amazing lyrics, this song and "How to make gravy" as well. He manages to tells beautiful stories to catchy tunes, can't ask for much more really!
How about Careless? How many cabs in New York City, how many angels on a pin, how many notes on a saxaphone, how many tears in a bottle of gin? How about Everything's Turning To White? Or From Little Things? A gifted man. A Poet Laureate of Australia (and I'm not Australian, so am impartial in that sense). 'He's just plain damned good!
@crazychainsawkid1 I met Paul Kelly at a free gig her did at a Melbourne club. He just walked in and did a gig for all there. He was one of the nicest and most humble people I've ever met.
@MonkeyDaemon He might have just been having a bad day, but I still don't like him for it. Apparently he didn't talk to anyone, or even give any eye contact and when people asked him things he just completely ignored them and blocked them out. Complete arrogant, narcissistic behaviour. I'm sure if you were already a fan of his music you'd be inclined to think otherwise.
ludblust, for a 14 year old my friend you have awsome taste in mucis. I been listening to paul kelly for more years than a care to remember, he is great... you stick to your guns and be and enjoy what you like dont worry about the rest of the world.... by the way i lost my Dad when i was young so im hearing you mate... stay strong.
@BarcardiBris haha 16 now :) hes amazing still, i keep hanging out for his next concert, i cant say the rest of the world bothers me any more really :)
ive come to realize, having something like losing a parent does break you but that break becomes a huge part of who you are and to an extent makes you stronger.
anyone who has seen Paul Kelly play this song live knows how much this song resonates through so many generations watching. As soon as the open guitar riff sounds the crowd cheers...Thank you Mr Kelly , you make us all so proud to have such a great music scene in this country.
@littleblackchook Exactly, I'm 16 and everyone I know is listening to techno and rap, I prefer to understand what the singer is saying, I've got a few friends into PK and their glad I showed him to them.....I did the same thing with bob dylan and neil young.
I cant believe I have just discovered this after listenin to cradle of love wi kelly willis. Im so moved. Come to Fife paul! Please . Its in scotland, you know you want to! ha ha x
i was there for this what a great performance, gotta say this is just about the best kelly band you could get on stage these days with dan on axe and pete luscombe on drums.
I was on stage with paul kelly while he sang this song in his cairns concert.. it was the best. he let me play air guitar with him. and i played drums with his drummer..
I saw Paul in a tiny, but popular, venue in Los Angeles, Calfornia back in the mid/late 90s. It was a very cozy club so we were very, very close and the show was very intimate, as if he were singing to us in our own living room.
He was awesome! and is arguably one of the best songwriters of his generation...
Why dosen't PK get taken on in Britain much more than he does. Any time he's been here (in Scotland), the crowds loved him. Anyone know who the backing guys are?
your mates have no idea if they make u an outcast for loving this or any of Paul Kelly's songs. Arguably one of the greatest song writers of all time. This shit will be around long after all the 'emo' puss being churned out these days. Stay strong mate
how the heck could your friends hate Paul Kelly... be happy knowing you have better taste in music than them... he is the greatest songwriter in Australian history bar maybe Nick Cave...
mate I was a huge fan of his since I bought Gossip LP at the age of 16. My mates had never heard of him either but soon became fans. Go your own way.....dont follow!
@ludblust i remember being 14 and being an outcast listening to paul kelly. 10 years later i am still listening, and now all my friends have finally caught on. it'll be right.
@robposer im now 16 going on twenty something, i still love this song, a few have caught on now but most still dont get it, i cant say it bothers me anymore, im very comfy in my skin for a 16 year old and wouldnt have it any other way. His songs are inspiring to me seeing as im a writer now, he is an amazing writer and i learnt alot from his work
@ludblust ... you have musical taste and enjoy it ..... music is inspiring and if it provokes fond and beautiful memories then play it loud and often.
Inspirational, lump-in-the-throat lyrics. Lost me old man the other day to cancer and this is just so real it's scary. Went to the concert at Hama Hall, had tears running down my face through the whole song. Genius
This song gets me teary, i can remember my older cousins taking me out past the waves, i felt safe. Now its time for me to take my kids out past the waves and let them feel safe.
Legend, legend, legend, legend, legend!!! No wonder his work is being studied by Year 12 English classes around Australia.
My dad introduced me to him, and I like a whole range of music, mind you, but there is something about Paul Kelly and his songs which strikes deep down.
Without doubt ,the best songwriter in the world. If you Australians love him so much, how come you talk all the way through his shows when Paul plays in London !
amazing song

When you live overseas, Paul Kelly's music can transport you back home to Australia in a heartbeat.
There's nothing like him anywhere else.
He can make you cry, make you smile in acknowledgement and make you cheer for the underdog.
All in a 3 minute piece of poetry with musical accompaniment.
This is my very favorite song, but so many others are great as well.
