NYWRC raises many raccoons each year, in as natural as possible an environment, with very little human contact, as do hundreds of other skilled and licensed rehab facilities around the country. For many of them, releasing in their birth location is not at all possible, and the only other alternative for them is euthanasia. Skilled rehab means taking an animal with no chance for survival, and giving it a chance equal to (& often better than) its wild-raised counterparts.
The survival rate for animals released away from the area they were captured in not good, and it is even worse for animals raised by humans. I don't think they should be released outside of the area they were raised in. They will depend on humans for food to survive for some time. Releasing a human raised animal away for it's known surroundings is just plain cruel.
Those coonies seem a bit young for release. How old were they? Most people down here in Louisiana keep them till theyre a bit bigger. So sweet to release and that one skunk with the tons of white was a beauty! I specialize in sknks and possums myself but do a coon a year and take all relocates on my property... good job!
