It's always a struggle for producers to keep it 100% true to period vs. adding a contemporary touch vs. modernizing such that the period feeling is lost, bastardized or made ridiculous. Had it been on-spot "period," the characters would be very un-sexy to today's audiences, weakening the credibility and the ability of the audience to connect with the characters. Thematically, the show illustrates that these late 50's early 60's issues still have resonance today. The balance seems well-chosen.
