Transgenderism has been around for thousands of years, the Roman Emperor Elagabalus might have had a sex change and would have been "the first empress" but then she was killed by a bunch of soldiers ... so ... and anyway, any kind of "abnormality" was always surpressed until now - 70 years ago being gay was illegal :/

When a child transitions, precautions are taken AT EVERY STEP to make sure that it is not a phase. For most of these children, the steps they have taken are 100% reversible, and those that are not are only given once they have expressed clear desire for them for years.

What is there to regret? No irreversible actions have occurred yet, and none can take place until later in adulthood. If the gender identification persists until then, the chances are they will not experience regret.

On the other hand if they go through a male puberty and the gender identification is persistent, it certainly will be regrettable.

The ratio is at almost 50% on suicide attempts, the last time any statistics were measured on us. No, it doesn't screw up your hormone balance either; if they decide not to continue, you simply discontinue the meds and your body enters puberty normally. There is no 'accepting yourself' for a real transsexual, either; I thought you claimed you were far from ignorant? My 'malfunction' is that I have some compassion.

I'm a woman and I don't think I'm as severe as to think I was born as the wrong gender, but I feel very free and happy when I wear boy clothes, do boy things and think of myself as a male. to me, the beauty of hormone blockers is that they sort of suspend puberty, or rather delay. i wish more transkids were given hormone blockers, whatever they may decide later. that way they avoid the heartache of permanent changes of puberty OR hrt, however they feel when theyre a bit older, because they have room to realize what they truly want either way. but a transkid having to go through 'natural' puberty is really traumatic (which we both know..) and in a lot of ways irreversible (same) :/

When a person is confronted with a hostile environment, there is always going to be a fight or flight response, and many children who feel they were born into the wrong body acquiesce to cultural standards in order to simply survive. This isn't a disorder so much as it is a birth defect. Those children have it right on.
