I'm reading this book for the first time and the Master did try to poison Lord Asriel, but you know screenwriters, they change thing to make the movie move faster or, for example, they try to condese the themes, like the religion so they try blaming the Magisterium, which is partly to blame, but we know The Authority is the villian. I had to research this series to better understand the novels.

Both words mean the same thing. They both mean an apparition of some kind. Nowadays the word is used negatively, but in its origins demon and daemon weren't actually supposed to be malevolent, they were just spirits of the world, hidden and mischievous. The "daemons" in the books and movie represent our true nature that is hidden. When he said "people without demons? That's impossible." he said it because everyone has demons, not physical but spiritual.
