  • Funny Pou,

My Kobun has become my wifes go to knive for carving Turkey and roasts. Thought you'd appreciate.

  • I like the thin handle and the size of the guard. The length of the handle is just right for me.

My only complaint would be that out of the box, it was barely sharp enough to cut butter. It literally would not cut paper.

  • thanks for the very very thorough review. I bought this knife on your recommendation, and like it a lot.

  • Great review. I fixed the shealth just like you did. Thank you for that detail.

  • A major downside is the handle. It is to thin for me, so I won't be buying it.

  • I like some plastic knife sheaths like in this video BUT I will never have a plastic holster for any handgun. I know a lot of people like them but I don't for a variety of reasons.

  • I have plenty of experience in a variety of situations in combat. I carried a minimum of 3 knifes. I would agree fixed blades are the way to go. I carried a M9 bayonet, double bladed boot knife, and the tanto knife.

  • Anybody who knows what they're talking about have any thoughts on using this for EDC as a civilian. 5,1/2 inches is legal where I live.

  • no whip sound :( whhatcheee

  • this is my back up to my back up

  • Lol its about$23 now :/ derppp

  • you have come along way since these OG table tops!

  • i just bought my kobun knife for 28 bucks o yea i cant wait..this will be my duty knife but first i need to practice with it..

  • its all about the kabar

  • @JeansForLife Kabars are like Acogs, everyone see them in movies and then wants one. trust me kabar arnt the best you can get. You only have to buy a Cold Steel knife once.

  • 420 and aus 8 botjh suck. Get he san mai III! How much more can it be?

  • @BigRooster747 A hundred bucks at least.

  • if you wanna see the blade so bad, then just skip to when he unsheathes it...morons

  • haha he pronounced tanto wrong....

  • @FordHuntington1 No he didn't.

  • I really like your review of this knife. I am deciding wether to get this knife or a kabar tanto. I would use the kabar for camping/survival uses and the kobun for a tactical edc. I am 13 and i was wondering if the kobun handle would fit me or the kabar would be too big. Thanks

  • For those of you complaining about how long it takes him to unsheathe the knife, just go look it up on google images. The information he gives about the knife while it's in its sheath is equally important to his target audience as what he says about the blade itself.

  • He takes the knife out @ 6:29

  • @NaZiKilLEr5000 OMG YES:_)!!!!!

  • This knife with San Mai III blade and Recon Tanto handle will be in my opinion excelent affordable high end "universal" tanto knife for everyday use if similary priced as SRK with San Mai III. Althrough there is Recon Tanto with composite blade i find his blade lenght uneccesery long for most of everyday tasks.

Master Tanto on other hand is for my way too expensive as utility / kitchen knife althrought some owners using him for that role.

  • "Sorry for the phone". For a little while I thought it was funny. Cool review though.

  • Looks like a mini Katana.

  • I worry about the Kraton handle and guard on mine. Wouldn't it wear out quickly or be sliced through by enemy's blade?

  • This knife is awesome, weighs nothing, excellent design for "tactical" use. In the winter I would conceal this as EDC over a tactical folder. For $30 it's incredible value

  • thanks for all the talk on the sheath. any one who knows anything knows the sheath is just as important as the knife. nice vid,

  • Are you in the Army or Marine Corps because you sound like you know what your talking bout when it comes to operations and crap good to go good review also i Have carried my Kobun when i got deployed good blade Semper Fi

  • @Landrymarine airforce

  • @Landrymarine He was in the AF for a long time. If I'm correct ( Veri feel free to correct me) he actually has a few videos talking about it. Unfortunately we get a huge amount of armchair warriors doubting his military career, likely the people who could never, ever cut it in the forces.

  • I've had an OSS for a long time, but I just got a Kobun. I personally think it's equally as awesome. Mine came as sharp as my best Spyderco or Emerson folders.

  • Just bought this... yesssss.

  • @nutnfancyJust want to give ya a like on your sheath fix. I.m going to use it on my Master hunter sheath. It has the same problem, and that sucker jumped out and bit me the other day! Should have watched this vid sooner :o) Also, I want to ask you how you reprofile your knife edges. I need to on the Master Hunter

  • @nutnfancyJust want to give ya a like on your sheath fix. I.m going to use it onn my Master hunter sheath. It has the same problem, and that sucker jumped out and bit me the other day! Should hhave watched this vid sooner :o)

  • Is there a Bowie like this size and weight wise? not a fan of tanto.

  • Dear nutn this or the G.I tanto please reply.

  • @AntebellumOg i ain't nutn but i'd say kobun because the kobun is legal for carry in some states depending on knife laws. i carry mine all the time

  • Great review!

  • where is this knife made?

  • Would you recomend this over the Recon 1 Tanto?

  • NICE VIDEO DO YOU KNOW IF THE KNIFE IS FULL TANG?

  • @carodriguez1977 yes it is

  • Ziva from NCIS has this knife!!!

  • awesome review! just saw this knife on amazon for 31 dollars and freaked out! had to see it my favorite dude on youtube had done a review on it and sure enough he has! i am getting this knife soon!

  • @knifefight19 Shoo - Veri

  • Great review and insight man. I want to add something, not to offend you, but for clarity: The traditional hold for any tanto blade is a upward 45 degree hand grip. This means that your index knuckle will rest within space of the guard and handle, and your thumb will hold firm support in the middle of the handle-rear. This hold ensures that the blade is controlled utmost, utilizing speed for flicking slices from the elbow and wrist.

  • if i'd did not have that blade a year ago in a gun fight i wood have bin dead cus my gun jam'd up

  • would nut n fancy go with a cold steel tanto kobun made with stailess steel aus as 80

or a cold steel gi tanto made with 1055carbon (im afraid of rust for it and if so how can i prevent )(the knife will be used mainly for survivale and throwing)

  • @TheOriginalSourBanan Keep it well oiled

  • can u throw it?

  • @VLesPaulV the gi model wich is a cheap crabon 1055 model is good for throwing so im guessing yes go check out the cold steel website they have demonstration on almost evry balde and other weapons

  • @TheOriginalSourBanan thanks dude

  • Great review! I am a big fan of this blade. Exceptionally lightweight for the size of the blade. Plus you can not beat the price point on this one. BTW my sheath was actually very secure and I did not experience any of the issues that you addressed, but I understand that you can only review the knife in your possession. This knife gets a lot of negative hits on the blade forums, but I really dig it! Take care!

  • Made a video response to this with my Kobun. Primarily the 550 cord handle I put on it. You should check it out Nutn and let me know what you think.

  • I know this is a old video. i would just like to know if it actually fits in a boot. the sheath looks really wide, and would like to know if its comfortable to wear. thx

  • I bought one and I agree with Nutn, this is a high value knife. I first felt that the grips was narrow and small and I have small hands. Once I had it for a while I realized the beauty of this knife is super small and light but a very nice and just right sized blade, what a great value

  • It is sharp but not sharp enough for me so i sharped it ".... shread ... shread ... shread"

I didn't know there is some one on the planet that need's sharper blade than CS prevents

  • i ordered a cold steel SRK got this one in error after checking it out i kept this one and reorded the SRK. this KOBUN is a great knife and love the balance

  • $40!? Wow.. I got mine for $27 off Amazon.

I guess they have come down a lot over the years. But all that aside it is an amazing knife, i also touched mine up. It will shave now lol. Also, i guess this varies from knife to knife. But, mine was VERY tight in the sheath, almost didn't get the damn thing out when i first got it lol.

  • Just ordered one of these yesterday, you gave a great review of it. Now comes the wait for the fed-ex man!

  • how do you think this blade stacks up against the sog tsunami? looks like the tsunami has more aggressive geometry.

  • Hey Nutnfancy!

I'm thinking about getting this knife, but I am wondering about the sheath. How do I go about carrying that on my right hip? Would the sheath itself just go on the inside of my belt, with the clip pointing outwards? Also, can you make a video showing how to tie the sheath to MOLLE or a belt using paracord?

  • Love this knife! I got it for about 9 bucks after a coupon on ebay!

  • Man, if that thing had 2 inches of serration, I would carry one on my gear! I don't need the defensive characteristics of the knife (I'm a paramedic) but if it came with serration, it would be the perfect utility knife!

  • Good review, but if you have issues with the handle I would recommend the cold steel recon tanto, the kobun was designed as a boot knife so that is why the handle is thin.

  • looks like a sword... cept better! keep it up nutn! :D

  • looks like a sword... cept better!

  • I got mine when the old version ( better quality ) was on closeout sale also. I have two of them, one with full serrations and one with the razor edge like in the review here. With regards to a tactical self defense blade that would not be used for any utility reasons I prefer the serrated blade. It is wickedly sharp and would do severe damage with little force exerted. Great knives. Vey concealable.

  • @themrpanda1 That kind of comment is unwelcome here. Its only a 10 min review, extremely short by TNP standards. If you cannot absorb 10 minutes of knife talk....walk on and don't look back. Another hissy fit like that and I'm blocking you.-- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • @nutnfancy GJ Veri.

  • @nutnfancy does it rust?

  • @erickr1980 no, i din`t think so.

  • @nutnfancy great looking knife!

  • @nutnfancy although i disagree with how he reacted, i'm afraid i feel the same way. Sometimes Nutn just gets so absorbed with talking about his experiences with the knife, he forgets to show us the knife until late in the video! And yes, it is very frustrating. xD At least the wait is usually worth it. If you are impatient, just fast forward 2/3rds the video, guys! Problem solved.

  • @nutnfancy can you make video on how to sharpen the kobun ?

  • @nutnfancy Well said Veri! Good on ya!

  • @themrpanda1 It adds to the tention man. don't you get it

  • I love this guy he keeps on goin

  • Good God, show the damn knife already!

  • can some onee link me to some tek-loks that fit this knife's sheath? pretty please thank you.

  • This is just an awesome carry everywhere knife i just got mine yesterday it fits on my belt really nice and also on my Army boots i just love it and its a really good steel for the price AUS 8A so if you have about 35.00 dollars laying around go to Amazon.com and get yours you wont regret it!

  • when coming out of the shealt, does the blade dull?

  • toys

  • I went to Fallujah! In Nov. of 04, not April. I didn't make it all the way to the end though! Keep on Keepin on Nutn'!

  • "It could probably use a little steel work to be honest"

*watches jagged rip form through the paper*

    yes, yes it could

  • The blade steel is junk. I have a carbon v kobun.

  • Very good review.

  • 6 minutes 29 seconds to show the blade WOW

  • good boot knife?

  • I think a civilian is more likely to get into a knife fight than a professional soldier in Iraq. I love my kobun.

  • I bought this and it is amazing for it's price, great for hiking on dry trails. Thanks for backing up my buy. :D

  • Herp derp I knows weapons alots cuz I r operator. Hyuk hyuk hyuk.

  • Like.

  • Sheath sucks, good knife.

  • The clip is not on the wrong side, it's designed to be worn iwb inside the waist band or inside a boot.

The tanto blade shape of the kobun lends itself best to a fighting knife, as a survival knife, it just won't work as well for skinning and other tasks. Also it's 1/8th of an inch thick, that is pretty thin for a "survival" knife.

There is no best blade steel, manufacturers come out with the "best" magic metal all the time. Allot of it is preference. I personally like my fixed blades to be

  • Is this a knife review or a sheath review?

  • @whitethronebooks You wouldnt carry a pistol without a holser, you cant have a fixed blade without a sheath, its an important part.

  • 6:30 to see the knife

  • what is the best steel to make a knife

  • Thank you for this review. I understand you are saying it is a great knife as a backup weapon BUT - 1. the handle might get in the way 2. notwithstanding that the handle is not substantial enough 3. the cross guard might allow your thrusting hand to slip up on the blade. 4. You better practice with it.

It seems that all those concerns are covered with the CS Safe Maker 1 with the

4 1/2" blade. - Same AUS - 8 but with foolproof thrusts and weapon retention:

    youtube.com/watch?v=OO8i5d4NE3I

  • Blade length?

  • would this be good as a survival knife

  • Jeez, 6 min and 26 seconds into the 10 min vid and you havent drawn the blade yet.

  • Why is the clip on the wrong side of the sheath?

  • @nutnfancy I couldn't read the backside of the blade. Where was that particular kobun made? I have 2 kobuns of different steels. And bought one from a source other than ColdSteel. I want to be sure i have a aus8. current model. Also do you know what the model number on the box was? 17T maybe? Yours should be made in taiwan. The first kobun's I think came in aus8 w/ matte finish.

  • great review

  • i keep this knife in my chest rig, with my kershaw blur.

  • i had to skip 70% of the video just to see the knife, lol.

  • this sucker is 27$ currently

  • I LOVE THE OSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! However I will be deploying the Kobun sometime soon : )...

I found this knife on yourcornerstore (dot) com for only $27... It was around $45 everywhere else I looked...

  • you should make a review on the master tanto from coldsteel i think a lot of people would appreciate that, its a great knife in my opinion

  • where can you get the Tech Lock fasteners, Anyone?

  • hey nutn, what do you think of kabar's tanto? thanks

  • yourcornerstore just got some of these in stock and they're selling them for $27. For just a few bucks more than the GI tanto and you get a kraton handle, AUS-8A stainless steel and a secure-ex sheath. What a deal!

  • Do civilian need this kind of knife ???

What is your suggestion for survival / emergency knife? I am so far looking at...

I am looking to buy SOG Elite Pup, but what are the difference among... SOG seal pup elite E37T-K, M37T-N, E37-N, E37S-K, E37S-N, E37TS-N, SE37-M Team? and what is Tini, ??

I thought SOG Elite PUP was the only ONE model, now I am so confused which one to buy ? For everyday utility / survival / emergency purpose

  • wow the kobun has belly

  • all talk, no blade

  • just like goldey locks!

  • Just ordered one and a Ti-Lite.

  • cold steel just released a version of this in san mai III steel

  • @haruu111 actually that was of the recon tanto.

  • nope

  • They just brought it back man! Go get one while they last.

  • They just brought the Kobun back so I'll have a chance to get it. :)

  • And the new versions is in AUS8A as well.

  • I dont know i love tando knives but somehow the cold steel tanto fix blades remind me of a kitchen cucamber cuting knife.

  • Dude you went six and a half minutes with out enven showing the blade

  • So... skip forward...

  • I'd carry this as EDC just cuz it looks so nice, haha.

  • I carry one as well. Not everyday, but its an amazing concealed tactical knife. Inside the waistband for me. Low profile and light.

If you can get your hands on one people, do it. Getting rarer and rarer.

Even if you get a 420 Sub-zero quench, with a matte finish, you wont regret it.

  • I have owned and used a kobun for about four years now and i totally agree with your comments, even after all this time i still struggle to find fault with this knife. the blade has a lot of penetrating power and is exelent for slashing and even fine work is a pleasure with the kobun. 5/5

  • dam that knife looks sexy

the tip looks like a katana

  • lol 3 minutes in: ok now lets start with the sheath.

  • like goldilocks just right lol

  • R.I.P to the 6 Italian soldiers died in Afghanistan.. always with us, you Folgore boys

  • i love this knife i only wish the handle was longer and had an exposed shull crusher.

  • Has anyone been able to find one of these anywhere lately?

  • Ka-Bar has a few on their website and I think A.G. Russell does as well.

  • as if this video wasn't awesome enough for the content/quality. You throw in little funny sayings like WROL and "just like goldie locks, just right".

    5/5

  • A guy has one for 20 bucks, brand new in box...should I buy it?

  • Hell to the YES.

  • @67mustangreg you need to examine it first. make sure it real and not a counterfeit

because if your friend has any sense he can sell it for at least what he bought it for

  • Buddy u give great reviews on all equipment and I hope I can see more of them in the futureI have a request though, could you make a comparison between Tanto blade and Spear blade knives? I think it would be worth to give a review on advantages and disadvantages of one and another so that one could match the type of blade vs demands of application

  • this is a good knife. i used it several times in my daily patrols. can do lots of thing on and off roads. good review.

  • You can get these for like 30 bucks now.

  • really?? where??

  • Rocky national just sold me one. Shop around, google it.

  • what kind of oil is suitable?

  • what kind of oil is suitable? baby oil...

  • I would love to see a review of the cold steel UWK which i have tried to destroy and the Oyabun which is the big brother to this knife. My CS UWK I have had for about 6 years and I have cut small trees, used it fishing and wadeding rivers when it was submerged for hours , I have also used it for a hammer ,and batoned with it .This is the best knife I have ever owned. it's a great knife. Anyway I love nutnfancy you have the best reviews i have every seen and keep up the good work my friend

  • fallujah if it isnt hell its in the same zip code... so i have heard

  • i was gifted this knife from a friend, it was discontinued before my time i guess, Its a hell of a knife, i keep it on me as my EDC. Its light, its small, but not too small. overall its a hell of a knife and its a shame they discontinued it.

  • Great review! The "a" in tanto though is more like an "ah" so it is more pronounced 'tahn-toe'.

  • 45! in australia they charge $340. u got lucky

  • the original tanto from c. steel was a hell of a piece - nowdays, they are made by the chicoms.

  • hey i want to get one of those and am big into hunting and camping and was wonderin if u would recamend it for that or not

  • I have this knife, and I can say that it is certainly performs well. When I went camping, I cut down a sapling that was over an inch wide with this knife, dulled very little, edge was undamaged. Very nice knife.

  • DANG that knifes Killer!

  • nice vid ;)

  • why did you chose the kobun and not the recon tanto

  • It's lighter and cheaper.

  • @nutnfancy i have both and love the kobun, light and compact . just butchered a deer and it was great covered with tallow after easy to clean and the steel beads when water hits it. love this knife and for the price its a no brainer.

  • @sonjenruiu41 it's fire power versus mobility

  • wow o.O i must have really small hands if, when i grip the knife, i still have the section from the lanyard hold down free

  • you could be saving soilder lives

  • oss or tanto?? srry i yust wanna know

  • OSS=Better reach
