I would like to comment on all the vicious comments, but my mother told me, "if you can't say something nice about someone don't say anything at all!" Nuff said?
October 29, 1951 was a dark day for my family, especially my father. That is the day that his mother, my paternal grandmother died. I would never get to know her and her, me.
Thank you for posting this. It was great! I love Fanny Brice because she was talent and original. I only got to know about her lately, and I can see that she must have been really something in her day - Totally unique!
nice photos! Fanny sings best when she doesn't add the accent. Her market was the yiddish and immigrant audience. Fanny talent was bigger than this fan base. Too bad for Fanny. Too bad for the many possible fans she did not reach. I listened to"Want the Rainbow" and I knew Fanny could have been a popular singer as well as a comedienne.TY pax42 for all your videos!
@yogisuperman. I can't believe you think that ethnic performers at that time "chose" to act stereotypically to appeal to a particular audience. She faked the accent because she had to in order to work, just like Josephine Baker had to dance in a skirt made of bananas.
@ugha323a You like to revel in ignorance, huh ugha323a? Brice was a brilliant entertainer, and I'm SURE she didn't hand-pick her audiences. Jeepers Creepers, already.
She was in the Ziegfeld Follies, and the only people that could actually AFFORD the follies were rich people. Not that I care, but that is who she ended up entertaining.
Snooks was popular amongst the poor as well as the rich.
Nice video!

@mkl62 That's terrible, but are you saying that your paternal grandmother was Fanny Brice?

This is a pretty amazing recording considering that it is toitally acoustic.
That is to say, No electronics, no amplifiers, no vacuum tubes!
Just one lady singing into the large end of a huge megaphone while a stylus cuts into a wax cylinder.

She really shows up Streisand on this one for sure. I used to think a lot of Streisand but after hearing the original, there is really no comparison.
rhomp2002 1 year ago
@rhomp2002 This version is indeed great but that doesn't make Streisands less beautiful. I don't think they should be compared.

I like the Yiddish accent even though she didn't speak Yiddish. I guess she learned just enough vocabulary to get by.
