The reason that they didn't say "I love you" to each other is because they didn't want to finalize her death; they didn't want each other to think that this was a last goodbye. Ryan wasn't smiling or laughing, it just looked like that because of the lighting.

it was sad when marissa died, but that didnt ruin the whole season 4. I agree with raexz. Without Marissa things became really different but that doesnt mean everybody forgot about her or stopped caring. It just means that they had to cope with it and move on with their lives. I think season 4 is very good =] Ryan and Taylor werent as remarkeble as Marissa & Ryan but they were alrite. Seth and Summer are the cutest. <3

its just the whole way that everyone dealt with marissa's death. it was so poignant, and saddening.
