I wonder if they knew that quarry was half full ? it was empty at one point after they drained it looking for Paul Gooch who died jumping right about where they are jumping from ....when it was empty you could see cars in the bottom they looked like little match box cars ! but the quarry filled up again on it's own over the years until they filled it with the "Big Dig" dirt .... I also wonder if they knew the kid who died there was never found in there pretty creepy!!!
@RingneckDoveFan ----that's to break the water so you don't hurt your feet for the most part ...ya know so you don't slap it with your feet ....I just usually wore sneakers but that make it pretty tough to swim sometimes
@mrwheelie100000 ---- that is probably well over 100 feet ....that quarry was already drained at that point & had already started filling in again ....before they started draining the jumps where they are standing were about 70 - 80 feet & from so with the amount of water missing if you look good you can see the old water line in the different color of granite (faded) so atleast 125 ft
That looks like so much fun. The really high jump is crazy. I wouldn't do that unless I saw someone do it before me. I would try to talk someone out of doing that cause I'm sure my first reaction would be, if you jump you're gonna either die or be hurt.
I heard of this one. My whole family is from Boston. People say you had to throw rocks in first to break the surface tension. Unfortunately, you'd have to jump immediately after tossing them, otherwise, it's totally ineffective.
probably 13 years since i last jumped till the other nite! Went up to "Little Granite" i think its called, cud be wrong. Its no Swingles, maybe a couple 40+ jumps, but even tho im 30, it felt pretty awsome to jump. Of course, it was 1am, probably not the best idea, but my middle name is , Bad decisions, lol. Just wanted to let u guys know, its on the left side of the road up to the Hills Golf course an Quincy Auction. bout half way up on the left, RIGHT next to the road, plenty of parking, lol
This is a great piece of history preserved. I loved Swindles it was cleaner and less crowded than Badgers and the Rail (in '70's). The water kept rising and in the 80's this jump (Hobrook) was less than 40' before the full drained. I never went above 70' - these jumpers had some balls. It's a real shame that Quincy's finest man made recreational treasure and tribute to it's past has been robbed from future generations. Where else now can they learn to swim and learn to fly.
@headfang2 not at either the of those. Swingles is completely filled in and Granit rail is filled up to the old water line. Now its a big rock climbing spot. Pretty cool to go up and look at. Swingles was so massive its crazy that they filled it in. It puts the size and scope of the big dig into perspective.
@SuperChris405 They filled in the two quarries in this video with the dirt from the big dig. It sucks these were the best quarries in the northeast to jump at by far.
@SuperChris405 scroll down to one of my comments, theres one i know of u can jump at, only some 40+ foot jumps, but its still nice, if you wanna get crazy, theres a spot with a tree at the edge, you can get up 100+ feet if you wanna pretend youre fuckin Rambo!
lolol,, I remember BREAKIN THE WATER!!! haha,, what a myth,,, throwin rocks in the water to soften it,,, kinda funny, but man, im so happy i was lucky enough to have gotten in the IRonworkers union as an 18 year old kid in 1999-2000,, we had so much work around, now im so pissed that the Quarries are all filled in with the landfill from the DIG...i would KILL to be able to go hang up roof tops on a hot summer day with a happy box fulla frosties, few buddies,, radio blastin some ZLX classics
My friends and I use to jump there in the late 80s, we use to hide our sneakers in the rocks so we would not ruin our boots. I saw alot of close calls of people almost hitting the wall or just being stupid but those were great times being there, to bad they filled most of it in.
well if there were no waves in a standing body of water, its at its highest resistance, which is called surface tension. when you throw a rock down, it causes waves and ripples in the water, lowering the surface tension and lessening the impact on your feet when you go in.
i cant stop watchin this,, memories,, i had a nice video from 1996, brought my huge ASS 1980s camera up there, the size of a VCR, and made the mistake of lettin someone borrow the damn tape, then they let someone borrow it and so on,, then i forgot about it,, now im BUMMIN
I called it SWINDLES for the longest time too, till like 1997 when i realized i was Swingles,, lol i was talkin about jumpin and my old man was like,, "You lil dickhead, its not swindles,, its SWINGLES,, thanks asshole, lol old man
God this brings back some Great memories,, fuckin shame they filled em in,, Generations of Quincy families jumped up there,, i rember the first time i went up and jumped,, was around this time 1993-94. and seeing my dads and uncles names all over the place was awsome,, i jumped in swingles a few times, i fell in love with roofop in the G-rail quarry,, NICE backflip off roofs by the way,,
Wow this brought back a lot of memories. My fiends and U would get a cab to Mr. Tux at the bottom of the hill. Ships was a cool jump.

you toss a rock down and it breaks the surface so its not as hard to hit
