  • Sam John Hopkins (March 15, 1912 – January 30, 1982

  • This sound is unreal.

I must admit that I'm still very new to R&B..

After frustrations with the mainstream I decided to take a glance into my past, to the classic rock I grew up with. But I've always been compelled by blues and finally found what I've been looking for.

It might be soft to claim that I'm merely a student of the blues, but I'm curious...

Curious about the stories and meanings behind the song, the words, the family connection to the music.

Pouring the soul through six strings.

  • @eskerton Right on, bro. I'd say just about ALL of us are still "students of the blues", no matter how long we've been studing, or how hardcore we are or feel about the blues...

Welcome to your new lifelong obsession, eskerton.

  • if you like the blues check out my channel

  • is there a dvd with this stuff?please tell me

  • Ghettoslut69, BAHAHAHA.

  • Thank you, ghettoslut69.

  • Im proud to be part of the few teenagers who still understand the good ol blues

  • haha wow, life was definitely simpler back then...that would have been cool to live like that in the 60's. And then the 70's and 80's. lol

  • that is real oldschool !!!

  • me to red rider

  • I searched for "lonesome road ending" and this is what I get.

  • Thumbs up if Fallouts DLC got you here!!!!!

  • this would sound so good while actually playing the fallout dlc lonesome road

  • Awesome

  • "Travel to the Divide; sink my feet in Old World ash."

  • no editing here, thats what real music is

  • @WaldoJeffers25 People like you complain that kids these days don't listen to real music, then when those kids say "I'm young and I like this" you go on telling them "No one gives a shit"...

  • Cool cat

  • "And at the Divide, he and I...there, we'll have an ending to things."

    -Ulysses

  • Love me some Lightnin. Thank you for posting this vid

  • The blues was there for me, During the worst of times.

  • can't w8 for the DLC :(

  • "Lord i'm gonna keep on travelin till i find some place to go"....perfect!

  • I'm a middle-aged, middle-class white woman. I'm probably as far from the kind of life this music is about as you can get. But I love it. It resonates in my soul, somehow or other. But I guess every human being on earth knows the blues in their own way. As someone once said to me ... you don't get da blues, da blues get you!

  • how could people dislike this??? what is there to not like?

  • fallout new vegas?

  • @BurningEffect lol i also googled "lonesome road" because of the fallout new vegas DLC

  • It's so awesome that this performance is on here, delta blues is unfortunately a dying art. The first truly american form of art. Its amazing to see one of the true masters plying his trade.

  • True Blues... I cannot express how much this music has to be preserved. People don't get lost in the electronic bullshipe. This is music raw and real!!

  • There's never enough Mississippi Delta in one's life. i hope one day, someone will reignite this primitive, beautiful music that ACTUALLY CAME FROM INSIDE. :D i dig me the blues. Makes me want to pull out my grandpa's old harp and blow until i can't anymore.

  • if you like delta blues, check out our band Rat Stomp :)

    youtube.com/user/ratstompmusic

  • Thx a lot for this vid,....great...!!!

  • wtf... at 1:12 when we see the guy holding the dominos, for a sec i thought it was a mobile phone -____- anyway, great music :D love blues

  • Anyone know what film this is from? I love playin' bones!!

  • これ以上のストリートライブがあるのか?!

    タオルがイナセだぜ!兄貴~

  • @alainhammond okay good to see I will hear you later, alligator !!

  • oh sorry videomaker, I love this vid..

  • @alainhammond what do you mean ? Was someone supposed to kill me, or something>> I was here Saturday, had to move up the lone hill, & travel 2 the computer. I could use MY NEW PC !! but some road apple brain keep virusing the computers, so I have to use public ones, that know how to keep the scum away. Sorry I am in a bad mood because I just found out the one I am hooked has been In LA for the last 1 1/2 years>>> Am I an idiot, or what.. yeah, if you say so, I am alive, Didn't U get my mail?

  • @alainhammond understood ((CA

  • @alainhammond the road can be fun, can be rough, by myself is the hardest, but I gotta do what I gotta do, yes ?? Happy Saturday ~Noah's Ark Day, now that was one lonesome guy //

  • I'm gonna keep on travelin', yes indeedy,

somewhere there is no guitar wars goinng on..

    Wonderful vid, videomaker !!

    Thank you

  • What's pathetic to me is the people who feel like only they are entitled to this type of music. Who cares if anybody listens to it to brag, to admire, to rip-off, or just to enjoy? We're all listening to it because we want to so get off your high horse.

  • its any footage, picture of him whitout glasses?

  • Is that a square and compass purposely present in that scene 1:05 ? Maybe just a coinky dinky.

  • 1:24 wow it's crazy to think I have a 20 dollar bill in my wallet that looks just like that *maybe* it's the same one, wouldn't that be a trip.

  • Comment removed

  • Is his lower E a bit out of tune, or it's just my ears???

  • @InfinityTracer yup - probably really old strings... still sounds great though...

  • So good to hear Lightnin' Hopkins again. Nobody else plays guitar like that.

  • 10 people dont know nothin from nothin

  • im not american or tend to have the racist outlook of alot of ( not all i know ) americans seem to have. But couldn't this music be shown to the massess of american racists to maybe nick their soul and shake there bigoted outlook on an array of issues? these brothers helped many depressed, lonely people with their music cause they understand what it is like to suffer and be unheard and judged. it is so embarrassing to hear racists rant about things they brought up to say.not what they may think

  • old souls

  • Thank you ghettoslut69 for posting this gem

  • Lightnin makes it look so easy. ...like all the greats.

  • This music for me is freedom.....all twisted up in a sound and lyrics.

  • A great Blues

  • what's that in his pants?

  • love Lightnin' Hopkins, Son House, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf...But Robert Johnson is the father of blues.

  • Best goddamn clip on youtube!!

  • muddy got me into the blues

  • damn he is awesome man! i have to buy some of those thumb picks

  • hahaha! well the man said what he had to say and he said it good!

the best thing about these guys is they never stop to count the bars in the blues, if it fits or not in the white teacher's pattern of 12.

it's only as long or short as relevant for comunicating the idea!

  • @analogic10

What are you dragging race into this for?

  • @WSWarthog chill out dude, I meant it nothing like that.

Nowadays when they "teach" blues in schools they emphasize the "correct" number of bars on each chord, like it's mathematics :D.

It's enough to see these old blues daddies here to realize it has not as much to do with form, but with feeling.

  • @analogic10

Doesn't matter to me, you're politicizing a song that otherwise has nothing to do with politics.

  • SON HOUSE. all others next

  • holy shit this guy is legit!

  • There's something about this music that demands respect; that says I've been to the edge and back.

  • Shine on moon . Shine on . RIP Sam

  • hey everyone state how old you are! cause that's what blues is all about, how young you can be and still appreciate it...

  • This is great stuff. Forget all the modern day blues players that just shred and play fast, that's not blues, this is blue - Lightnin' is the man!

  • unbeatable blues and some pretty sharp domino playing. thanks for this!

  • Lightnin Hopkins. An AMERICAN MASTER! RIP

  • what guitar is that? gibson or something else? can't quite make out the writing on the headstock...

  • @willadlard90

I'm not familiar with that model but It appears to be a Silvertone or Harmony, the big "L" in the middle of the headstock leads me to believe it's a Silvertone.

  • @gassertrucks Thanks alot, I was thinking that could be the "b" in Gibson, but you're probably right. Amazing guitar anyway!

  • @gassertrucks Absolutely cool guitar! If you look at the pickups and compare them with say a Harmony H-62 or the Hollowbody Silvertones of the 50's you'll see the same pickups, that's what tipped me off.

  • This is real music... raw, polished, and powerful! I dig their domino table as well. Everyone keeps their own score. Can't pen one out 'round these boys...

  • How could someone "dislike" this!!!

    Awesome upload!

  • I'm nostalgic for a dominoes game i'd never 've attended or been invited to attend. I'm nostalgic for the authenticity that doesn't exist today. (Says a man posting on youtube, perhaps the loneliest, desperate, most unauthentic acts.)

  • Hopkins revolutionized blues on such a grand scale. Just a remarkable talent in such a great era, this guy could make a guitar cry. Such a shame this form of music does not exist anymore. Thank you Hopkins for your contributions, Texas blues would never exist without you.. One of the greatest PERIOD.

  • this s0ng is still speaking the truth. I'm travelling the l0nes0me r0ad. I l0ve this s0ng and I'm drinking black c0ffee and sm0king cigarettes. peace and blessings.

  • what an awesome fella

  • This is the true essence of the American spirit. The human spirit and the holy spirit!

  • damn the sound of those domino games are annoying

  • @justwanttouploadvids When your playing bones you gotta slam the dominos on the table lol

  • The only annoying things about these great videos is the kids that come here just to say "hey, I'm only 12 and I love this, I'm so grown up and so mature and so unlike the other kids of my age"

Yeah, we get it. No one cares.

Musical taste shouldn't be used for bragging,

  • @WaldoJeffers25 That is the best Youtube comment, I ever read. You say whats on my mind! Thank you.

  • @WaldoJeffers25

Im with you on that one. We log on to hear music. Not to hear people tell they are hardly old enough to drink beer. Ity's get on my tits everytime.

  • @WaldoJeffers25

Man, are you kidding? That;s how young blood define themselves. Don't be so elite. That was you, one time when. Celebrate, don't denigrate, friend.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 You are a fucking douchebag.

  • @TTmaniax What? That can't be right.

I'm young and I listen to the blues, therefore I'm awesome.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 I would've explained it in more refined language, but why waste time explaining something to an egotistical asshole? Yeah, let's hate little kids for stating they are different from their peers. There was a time when I would smack you kind in the mouth without the slightest hesitation, and with excellent effect too.:)

  • @WaldoJeffers25

    THUMBS UP X 1 MILLIONNNNNN

  • @WaldoJeffers25 yur an asshole...let the kids shine

  • Comment removed

  • @WaldoJeffers25 I can fully appreciate where you're coming from. I'm just happy to see that there are youth that can still appreciate good music, and not the bulk of the crap that's being passed off as music.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 Its one thing if their braggin but honestly it gives me hope. I can't imagine a world where everybody's bumpin' Lady Gaga and queer ass Justin Beiber

  • @WaldoJeffers25 - Gotta be nice to the kids, we want them to keep this music alive, and they deserve credit for wading thru the tsunami of bullshit between them and this music to get to it. All respect to them, they've had to find this on their own, hope some insanely great bands come out of it.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 it's just an honest opinion; there's always room for that.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 I think what those kids are trying to say is "this music is timeless and kicks ass, glad to have discovered it". Don't just assume the worst and judge from on high. I don't give a hoot about how old someone is if they show a great musical taste.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 I care. Better they have a little pride in listening to this, than listening to lady gaga.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 Dude, let 12 year olds be what they are. That's par for the course at that age. They're still just kids. I'd rather them come here bragging knowing that they don't listen to Bieber. They'll grow up with a great foundation in music.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 I agree.Yeah, it is good when they listen to such great music, but they neednt say it. They should think it. They just want to say "I am not mainstream and i´m one-of-a-kind". They´re just arrogant!!! Not everybody, of course, but somebody.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 better them to like this than gaga and kesha and whatever else the hell is being produced now a days..

  • @WaldoJeffers25 amen.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 I see your point, but the bigger picture is we should encourage those kids to continue to explore REAL music, rather that existing solely on a diet of Justin Beiber, and/or whatever manufactured bullshit MTV tells them is cool this week. If the only drawback is that I have to read a silly comment about it here and there, so be it. It's a small price to pay...besides, there are WAY more annoying comments made about every single video on Youtube.

  • @chrisjackson1 very well said.

  • @chrisjackson1 What are you talking about? REAL music? This was music back then, but my friend, music evolves. It's not static. Were those fine musicans in the video suposed to play like, let's say: Bach, Mozzart, Bethoven? No. They did something diferent, something new. Beiber is not something new. Folks just like to listen to him, and that is all.

  • @WaldoJeffers25 Yes those comments are somewhat annoying, but did you know that 10 idiots disliked this video?

  • @WaldoJeffers25

If any 12 year-old kid wants to attach himself to old blues instead of new pop crap, he IS cool in my book... more power to him.

  • @pendy16 Does 17 count? :D

  • Fantastic stuff

  • One statement sums it up.

    "Real Music."

    This is so good.

  • @acdcfantic I´m 15 and i like this stuff! I like Muddy Water and I like Willi Dixon too.

    Please shout up!

    Sorry my english isn´t good.

  • love this!

  • Cool ole jam.

  • who are the 7 fags that didnt like this song? lol

  • @ElDiabloEastSida I think they come from Fraggle rock county.

  • @ElDiabloEastSida

me you got a problem with that ?

  • @hardlawd ...........sure...y not lol

  • Doesn't get any better than that! Great job

  • wtf in wich cd is this song????????????

  • im 11 i luv him :) and i like elvis

  • Glad to see so many young people commenting positively on this genre of music. I listened to this stuff back in the day as when I was a teen, DISCO was it. I'm 46 now and think it's great that kids go to youtube to see stuff I never would have imagined you would see. This kills everything MTV ever tried to be. This is real music, no light shows, no backup dancers, no smoke, no fog, just music....Keep it alive............

  • @karmabites1 a-fuckin men pally, well said. not a single wasted note here

  • I would follow him down any lonesome road...

  • must...learn...to...play....guitar....Now. I thought the couple of blues riffs I knew sounded pretty cool. But this made me realize there is this whole new level of skill that I haven't even tapped or can imagine playing. this is incredible!

  • the first music video???

  • @redneckfootbal check out blind willie johnson trouble soon be over...thats an old video for sure

  • Thats real good stuff! Thank you soooooooooooooo much!

  • Folks are too spoiled to sing blues like this now-days.

  • lonesome-ass blues right there

  • Besides the musical virtue, we really need to bring these types of hats back.

  • @slate42

    hehe..yeah right!

  • I love how the lyrics reflect on his life and soul, the songs are great stories.

  • i want that chalkboard bones table

  • It's sad that this isn't the music of today. This shit is glorious.

  • This is the best blues musician, what I heard!

  • slammin bones.

  • oh black america, whatever happened to you. the last 50 years must've been a proper fuck up in order to go from this to lil wayne.

  • @SpaceBambino

    I'll second that.

  • @SpaceBambino I agree. People like Duke Ellinton and Lightnin` Hopkins would roll over in their grave if they heard black music today.

  • I've been listening to a lot of technical classical and shredding stuff lately, but ain't nothing can compare to that good old southern fried blues. NOTHING IN THE WORLD!

  • lonesome is lonesome-

when you travellin' this road by yourself.

  • Cor Blimey! cheers mate for the video where ever did you get the clip?

  • Only you f---k boys would notice anything but Lightnin's playin

  • Only you F---k sissies would notice antthing other than his music

  • Look at that fat cock!

  • HAHAHAHA!!! Jezus Christ! You ain't lyin, Lightnin is a knee slapper!

  • @Blazer348 only a F sissy would notice anything but Lightnin's playin

  • @Blazer348 probably just a bottle of whiskey in those old man pockets--

  • I first heard the magic in Sept 1959 .... It's even better today

  • he's sittin in that chair.. nd theres about 3 people there.. maybe a couple more. but now.. he'd have 10s of thousands standn around... oh where'd you go Mr. Lightnin' Hopkins, where have you gone? and let me follow that lonesome sound

  • El maestro Relampago Hopkins

  • excellent music

  • beautiful man thanks for posting peace out

  • Lightin Hopkins

    that dude is the greatest

  • Outstanding!

And most kids think that music videos started with MTV or The Midnight Special!

  • Amazing! This would have been put on wax at that time with the most primitive equipment! Thanks 4 sharing!

  • hopkins got the bules all the down to his bones

  • Thank you ghettoslut69.

  • Nothing like sidewalk blues.

  • Man I dig that 12-fretter.

  • This is the blues god.

  • damn, I love everything Mr.Hopkins did. R.I.P. to the King of raw-blues(besides R.Johnson)

  • wow just awesome and with that cool doco style film as visual track classy as
