@whisky110 I believe it was in memory of one of their crew or production team. It's juste a sad irony that this song became true for Neil years after.
@whisky110 Yes, it's specifically about Robbie Whelan. He was an asst. engineer on some of Rush's albums and was a friend of the band. "On his way to work at Le Studio one morning in early 1983, Robbie was killed in a car accident. "Afterimage," was written for him." - Neil Peart, Roadshow

was only a chap when this was out originially....what a terrific tune...was not a rush fan but my brother bought afterimage and I couldn't get over this song....amazing
@Vedkar and all the rest that lost their fathers, I also RIP my dad with this, I had to thumb up you. This song is so great to meditate about the lost ones, they will always be on our hearts. We can carry on, always, that's what they would like us to do.
Wow, what a great video (never seen it before)! Hats off to Louvers for posting it. Been a Rush fan since 1978 (Hemispheres) and even saw them on the Grace Under Pressure tour (at Madison Square Garden) and was very disappointed they didn't play Afterimage. While I love Grace, Afterimage is one of my favorites from the album and I think it would have gone over very well live.
Kid Gloves and Between the Wheels were also not played on the Grace tour, two additional big omissions in my opinion.
I love the old songs from the '70's/early '80's, but this song remains one of my all-time favorites from any band. It's an absolute schooling in how to play drums in a way that is right for the song, but with creativity, passion, and expression. Great lyrics, GORGEOUS guitar solo (as is usually the case with Alex Lifeson), and very nice use of keyboards; particularly at a time when many were abusing them in Rock. I will always love this band.
Just my opinion, but Signals and Grace Under Pressure are the absolute peak of Rush. Awesome songs, extremely strong (physically/emotionally) vocals, and, I think, all of the guys being at their technical best as instrumentalists and with ensemble playing.
His daughter died in 1997. He wrote this song before it was recorded in 1984. How could he have written this song about her death? Use your brain a little, man...
@bigtwit Of course I can? And? This volume of music from 3 guys. I can imagine other things as well? Kiss was good, classical has been done before. RUSH does classical on their own.
ok so i look at the right side and it says rush is playing at spikehill, brooklyn. i get all excited cuz im near brooklyn. when i click on it, its big time rush, FML
@Boogra no was his daughter lost control of her car going back to school a year later lost his wife to cancer but neil felt she lost the will to keep going on after they lost their daughter
0:00 I think Neil's swift sweeping drum/cymbol riff at the beginning is what turned my head to this song when I first heard it. 0:35 I think it would've been unearthly if Geddy's voice was double dubbed in the "suddenly you were gone." part. Or Alex had backed up in voc as in "subdivisions". it -was- the '80s.
Saw them twice on the GUP tour. A bad ass period for the band. At the very top of their game, and not giving a fuck about what anyone thought about their music. That takes some major balls, especially after the commercial success of MP.
Yes, Yes I know,0:00-5:02 is the best part of the song BUT at 3:16 its ...ah man words cant describe it AND AT 3:35 when Neil kicks in, its just... AAAAGGhhh its TOO MASSIVE!!!
It's brilliant how we can't see below Geddy's waist whenever the camera's on him. For all we know he could be on a bucking bronco in the video rather than playing keyboards...
The ooooh baby I wanna get your close off cause the room is hot er whatever nowadays crap music doesn't hold a candle to these gentelmen here. This is what talent and song writing will get ya. Rush will go down in the history books as one of the greatest bands that ever exsisted. Their talent is incalculable. Put some good headphones on, or just crank your speakers, sit here and watch, listen. It WILL blow your mind.
@nashimus595 Actually...Leave the volume at a moderate level, don't turn it up to the point that the sound is super loud, i.e. - with my studio system, I listen to this at real sound (so its like your actually there listening to the music in real life) and I have the Windows master volume at 100 and I listen to the music through Windows Media Player and have that at 25 on the 100 scale. I get the full dynamic scale of sound when it turned down at a natural volume level like that.
@nashimus595 And I tell you, when I listen to Rush like that, everything is so clear down to the very last detail...Just the dynamic rawness of the sound is amazing, a good example is a song like 'Double Agent'. That song utterly blows it out of the water for quality.
@mikeweit he's a genius. this is why i thought it was silly when they said that alex felt left out in this era and felt he had to make way for the synth. but he really showed a different way of playing that is spectacular
@scat4u yea dude i felt the same, i dont mean to sound jaded, because Beyond The Lighted Stage was something awesome for Rush getting recognized, but to me this 80's lifeson sound/approach to guitar and album making was his most genius as a performer and solidified him as a true jack-of-all trades guitarist who happens to also be able to rip guitar solos like jimmy page/gilmour then into eddie van halen styles (check out the solo on kids gloves), then into 12 string open acoustic style 90s
@mikeweit yeah. think about how many different sounds and genres rush has crossed over the years. what other band in past or present has shown something like that?? now they want to put the fucking BEASTIE BOYS in the hall of fame. not that i have anything against them, because i like their music, but come the fuck on. you can't even argue that rush wasn't commercially successful as they have sold millions of albums. i know the holy trinity known as geddy, neil, and alex don't care though..
This video only gets better for me as the years go by...And it also made me love the song even more. Lots of dramatic camera angles and emotional resonance in the editing and the guys' playing.
@darkpoet25 Ahh. I heard about Chronicles having a CD+DVD combo, plus saw it one time...Didn't actually know that it had music video though. Thanks for the heads up.
@LightningCat315 It only has a few videos on it: Closer to The Heart The Trees Limelight Tom Sawyer(studio version) Red Barchetta Subdivisions Distant Early Warning Red Sector A The Big Money Mystic Rythms Time Stands Still Lock and Key The Enemy Within(hidden) Afterimage(hidden) I would like to see all their music videos in one collection myself.
RIP Andrew McNaughton

LightningCat315 8 months ago
@nashimus595 And I tell you, when I listen to Rush like that, everything is so clear down to the very last detail...Just the dynamic rawness of the sound is amazing, a good example is a song like 'Double Agent'. That song utterly blows it out of the water for quality.

@mikeweit he's a genius. this is why i thought it was silly when they said that alex felt left out in this era and felt he had to make way for the synth. but he really showed a different way of playing that is spectacular
scat4u 5 months ago

Given the "popular" dreck @#$% they choose to recognize, I consider it a badge of honor that Rush isn't in the R&R Hall of Fame. @#$% 'em.

more energy captured in this track than in possibly any other Rush song. It is so raw

Maybe the idea of lost loved ones hits too close to home now, considering Neil's loss. Perhaps that is why this song is no longer played.
Lughnerson 10 months ago
@Lughnerson Considering that in this song, the opening lyrics were dedicated to Neil's wife and daughter.
