  • RIP Andrew McNaughton

  • @maximaman380 Completely agree. The passion in their playing and Geddy's singing is what makes the song so great.

  • rush has too many good songs to play in a show. my god, can all the good rush songs be played in one day? XD

  • I love this song and video because their emotion about their friend really shows, especially in Neils eyes. Maby ive watched it too many times but thats how i feel

  • 中学生で、はじめて、Rushに出会った曲。

  • One of the best albums ever!

  • One of my favorite songs means alot

  • i love neil but he kinda messed up from 0:17 - 0:20, another proof that he's human :)

  • @MTLguitarist98 shut up

  • @MTLguitarist98 that was more like a little Richard shut up!!

  • pure emotion - lyrically and instrumentally

    From Canada, with Love

    RUSH - Canada's Greatest Export

  • Can't get enough of Rush. For me, the best prog rock band ever.

  • The most... Original, talented, inspiring band on the planet..... Most of the songs that dont make on the radio are some of their best ones.....

  • @ xxxx15us Thanks for the info, I knew it had to be about something real.

  • what amp did lifeson use during this time period?

  • Thumbs up if Rush should resurrect this song again live.

  • @74jailbreaker 1,000 thumbs-up. Probably my favorite song, and maybe one of two Rush songs that brings me to tears.

  • @74jailbreaker Ooooooh yes man!

  • Awesome song, awesome album.

  • RIP Joe I miss u & think of you every day

  • Brilliant.

  • im proudly the 500th person to like this video, what an honor, to the best band ever!

  • Despite the awful events that Neil went through years after this, does anyone know if he wrote this from a first hand bereavement experience ?

  • @whisky110 I believe it was in memory of one of their crew or production team. It's juste a sad irony that this song became true for Neil years after.

  • @whisky110 No. This was written circa 1993, well before his wife and daughter passed away.

  • @whisky110 Yes, it's specifically about Robbie Whelan. He was an asst. engineer on some of Rush's albums and was a friend of the band. "On his way to work at Le Studio one morning in early 1983, Robbie was killed in a car accident. "Afterimage," was written for him." - Neil Peart, Roadshow

  • haha good song ..good video but the shots are way too long its like 1 minute of geddys face cmon

  • RIP Joe LaChance. I love you to infinity and beyond

  • geddy lee kind of looks like my mom right here

  • *love you to infinity and beyond

  • RIP my beautiful, witty, intelligent, kind son. I loe you to infinity and beyond!!

  • Why they are not in the hall; "This is something that can not be understood."; until now; talk the truth; these pussy/limp-dick/cock-gobbling/jew assholes have no clue!

  • Grace Under Pressure-one of Rush's greatest albums-glad I have it in my collection.

    Robert Nix Rock/Pop Artist

  • It seems like the director intentionally went out of their way to not show Geddy playing the synth. Maybe he/she was not a fan of syth era Rush?

  • was only a chap when this was out originially....what a terrific tune...was not a rush fan but my brother bought afterimage and I couldn't get over this song....amazing

  • @Vedkar and all the rest that lost their fathers, I also RIP my dad with this, I had to thumb up you. This song is so great to meditate about the lost ones, they will always be on our hearts. We can carry on, always, that's what they would like us to do.

    :)

  • Wow, what a great video (never seen it before)! Hats off to Louvers for posting it. Been a Rush fan since 1978 (Hemispheres) and even saw them on the Grace Under Pressure tour (at Madison Square Garden) and was very disappointed they didn't play Afterimage. While I love Grace, Afterimage is one of my favorites from the album and I think it would have gone over very well live.

Kid Gloves and Between the Wheels were also not played on the Grace tour, two additional big omissions in my opinion.

  • It's RUSH!!! Best band ever! Get them into the R'n'R Hall Of Fame! Canada ROCKS!!

  • I think of my late best friend growing up in the 80's evrytime I hear this song. Long live Billy-Though RUSH

  • Rush+Disco=Rusko.

    Just in case anyone

    knows v

  • @RuskoVEVO No...one is pure talent and one is mostly trash..Rush is the talent obviously

  • Has Neil ever revealed whose death to whom he is referring in this song? Definitely, my favorite on Grace Under Pressure.

  • @myerssa7 Yes he has, it was written for an assistant engineer at Le Studios in 1983

"On his way to work at Le Studio one morning in early 1983, Robbie was killed in a car accident. "Afterimage," was written for him."

  • Did this video receive any airplay back in the day? Took me 30+ years to discover it. Arguably the best song on the album.

  • @sirscroddy Make that 27 years. :)

  • I love the old songs from the '70's/early '80's, but this song remains one of my all-time favorites from any band. It's an absolute schooling in how to play drums in a way that is right for the song, but with creativity, passion, and expression. Great lyrics, GORGEOUS guitar solo (as is usually the case with Alex Lifeson), and very nice use of keyboards; particularly at a time when many were abusing them in Rock. I will always love this band.

  • Just my opinion, but Signals and Grace Under Pressure are the absolute peak of Rush. Awesome songs, extremely strong (physically/emotionally) vocals, and, I think, all of the guys being at their technical best as instrumentalists and with ensemble playing.

  • @mahajohn maybe signals, but g.u.p. sucked. their best is the perm. waves and moving pics era

  • @metzepp I like how you read the comments for a song from an album that "sucked."

Seriously though, I hated g.u.p at first, but trust me, it can grow on you. Now I really like it.

  • @poddish Agreed. This is probably my favorite album. Perfect mix of guitars and synth, IMO. Every song is a winner.

  • Neil Peart has the greatest braid ever!

  • *is 81337th viewer

  • Every band has thier own sad songs, i think this is Rush's.

  • Geddy is rocking that scarf.

  • this song reminds me of my late son...It couldn't be said in a more perfect way....

  • Probably one of my favorite Rush songs.

  • how can't you love this song?

3 people do not understand anything about music, I guess

  • @navyton1

His daughter died in 1997. He wrote this song before it was recorded in 1984. How could he have written this song about her death? Use your brain a little, man...

  • Rush = Our modern composers. The question is when will the boys grant us the privilege of hearing their songs with an orchestral accompaniment.

  • @ThePatriotMuckraker Can you imagine Subdivisions being played by an orchestra!

  • @bigtwit Of course I can? And? This volume of music from 3 guys. I can imagine other things as well? Kiss was good, classical has been done before. RUSH does classical on their own.

  • ok so i look at the right side and it says rush is playing at spikehill, brooklyn. i get all excited cuz im near brooklyn. when i click on it, its big time rush, FML

  • Amo esse som.

  • 4o\m/

  • Neil Peart wrote this song for a good friend who passed away.

  • @Boogra no was his daughter

  • @Boogra no was his daughter lost control of her car going back to school a year later lost his wife to cancer but neil felt she lost the will to keep going on after they lost their daughter

  • @navyton1 no, his daughter died in the 90's. This song was written in the 80's.

  • zajebiste!!!

  • 0:42 too 1:00 is it just me or does geddy look like he's trying ride a bike under the screen drunk idk it's just becuase you can't see the synth

  • Om Om ini masih tetep gahar ....

  • Rush is 'totally 80's' here but in a great way,I remember buying 'Grace Under Pressure' and cranking this track in particular up.

    Robert Nix Rock/Pop Artist

  • @onthemoveagain I love this song. I guess I'm getting old because they look so young here and this is not even their early stuff, ROCK ON!!!!!

  • 0:00 I think Neil's swift sweeping drum/cymbol riff at the beginning is what turned my head to this song when I first heard it. 0:35 I think it would've been unearthly if Geddy's voice was double dubbed in the "suddenly you were gone." part. Or Alex had backed up in voc as in "subdivisions". it -was- the '80s.

  • RIP my smart, funny, creative, handsome and kind son. I miss you so very much, Joe.

  • R.I.P. Dad, I miss you every day. You're 7 years gone and it still feels like yesterday you would drum along to this song with me in your lap.

    Happy birthday, old man.

  • @Vedkar ITS STRANGE. MY DAD IS 4 YEARS GONE.I HAVE THE SAME FEELING ABOUT THAT SONG,FRIEND.RUSH IS PART OF WHAT FEEL ABOUT LIFE.

  • @Vedkar My condolences!

  • I don't usually say "amazing guitar solo" since I like to look at songs as a whole, but man, AMAZING GUITAR SOLO.

I love Alex's guitar sound from this album, so cool

  • Never knew they made a video for this tune. Great song and one of my favs off this album!

  • Those 3 idiots disliking this song should be put like that guy in mechanic orange only with headphones listening Rush for maybe.... 6 months 24x7

  • This is just a jewel . What a piece of art they played. Rush is the best no doubt.

  • RIP To my best friend in the world, Albert Spurlock. "Suddenly you were gone.." indeed, and I wasn't ready. :( :( :(

  • Saw them twice on the GUP tour. A bad ass period for the band. At the very top of their game, and not giving a fuck about what anyone thought about their music. That takes some major balls, especially after the commercial success of MP.

  • god geddy lee looks so bad ass in this song, <3 rush

  • Yes, Yes I know,0:00-5:02 is the best part of the song BUT at 3:16 its ...ah man words cant describe it AND AT 3:35 when Neil kicks in, its just... AAAAGGhhh its TOO MASSIVE!!!

  • where your job

    /watch?v=Lu9Ycq64Gy4&feature=related

  • the rockinghorse winner

  • no one understands growing up to be the second best drummer in the world ffs

  • all the echoes home to geddy

all the victors go to Olivia

    and the livers keep living

  • God these guy's have a cool sound during the 80's i usually only listen to 1981 and under that but they are awesome in both decades.

  • That final shot on Neil is kind of prophetic.

  • One of the greatest guitar solos ever conceived in my opinion!

  • grace under pressure has a lot of hidden treasures on it i think that this album is far better than signals but thats my opinion

  • neil is the man look how serious he is in this video and LMFAO yea for all we know getty could be rideing a bucking bronco

  • Excellent song : )

  • This takes me back to high school...

  • It's brilliant how we can't see below Geddy's waist whenever the camera's on him. For all we know he could be on a bucking bronco in the video rather than playing keyboards...

  • perhaps the ugliest band ever.. what is going on behind Neil's head ?

  • @idektron Knock off your role playing crap, don't comment unless I give you instructions to.

  • @Zahn that is the funniest thing i have heard all day ! good work !

  • The ooooh baby I wanna get your close off cause the room is hot er whatever nowadays crap music doesn't hold a candle to these gentelmen here. This is what talent and song writing will get ya. Auto tune.... come on now, that just let the wrong people in the door that arent talented. These guys worry about more in life then just girls and hair and sh!t ya know. Smart rock.

  • i love how geddys dancing lol

  • GGOOOONNNNGGGG! The power chords in this tune and in several other RUSH songs sound like great surrealistic bells to me.

  • I imagine this is how Bam Margera is feeling about Dunn right now.

  • Is it me or does Neil look like Tom Hanks in this video?

  • @fryzie13 He looks sad. Really, really, sad.

  • @fryzie13 You just tipped me off didn't you?

  • @fryzie13 I seriously thought the exact same thing before I read this comment

  • after you see red you brood on it. That's "afterimage". I'm not joking. Cell phonies and cars do NOT mix!

  • It's been mentioned earlier, but for those who don't want to scroll through the ton of comments, the lyrics were written by Neil as a tribute to Robbie Whelan, the asst. engineer at Le Studio (where Rush recorded several albums). Robbie and Neil were close and Robbie had taught Neil how to cross-country ski. Neil took the loss hard, and the Neil holding his head down at the end of video was a nod of respect and sorrow for the passing of his friend.

  • This whole album is awesome, and this song in particular is a haunting sound. Red Sector A is also a scary song. For a band that is known for being upbeat and optimistic, this is a very ominous album, especially for the 80s. I didn't even know there was a video for this song, thanks for posting.

  • This is on my funeral soundtrack!

  • and also its like when geddy bobs his headleft and right he takes on the persona of a muppet lol

  • lol yea i know its so funny watching this video w the facial expressions omg lol

  • Love the way Neil kinda puts his head forward at end ! Been looking for this Video for a while!Got video in my house but crashing burds fur ah while! This was kinda one of the first song i learned when i got back into guitar again after spending a few years copping E`s and going to raves back in the early to midnineties !(Wouldn`t change a thing!) So i stuck VHS "Through The Camera Eye"!And Alex might as well be teaching ye his self !! Really like solo by the way ! Thanks Rush!Peace Ye`All

  • geddy's trying to look so intense, but we all know he's a goofball...

  • the drummer looks like tom hanks

  • I listened to this album SO MUCH when it came out! Damn.

    Such a great song.

  • I listened to this album SO MUCH when it came out in '84! Damn.

    Such a great song.

  • what a remarkable, tough song

  • The 80's: Nobody's hair could escape them.

  • This theme is awesome! I heard and saw it after the dead of my wife, and a was shocked for the images of the boy near his mother, the same situation I was lived days ago!

On the other hand, the song and the performance of the Gods (Rush) is perfect!!!

Sorry for my bad english, I am a chilean fan of Rush.

  • In response to hamjamnspamalot.. 97 and 98 were bad years for all of us Rush fans... i took 2 of my best friends to see the T4E tour.. well both of them died within the year along with my Mom... Soo it was devistating to me as well as Neil but i had all the Rush albums to keep me going!! Thank someone for their return to the stage and producing more great music!!

  • RIP...Robert A Johnson.. My brother who passed away this week...He was a devoted Rush fan since i said..listen to this in 1980!! He listened to me and heard the Magic!!! We all went to the show in Baltimore and had a very memorable night!!! Love and Miss U my brother!!!!! Never will forget U!

  • @ThunderThornton19 My condolences.

  • @ThunderThornton19 RIP fellow Rush fan.

  • @ThunderThornton19 Those are great memories to have of your brother. The association to good music helps a bit too doesn't it?

  • Rush will go down in the history books as one of the greatest bands that ever exsisted. Their talent is incalculable. Put some good headphones on, or just crank your speakers, sit here and watch, listen. It WILL blow your mind.

  • @nashimus595 Actually...Leave the volume at a moderate level, don't turn it up to the point that the sound is super loud, i.e. - with my studio system, I listen to this at real sound (so its like your actually there listening to the music in real life) and I have the Windows master volume at 100 and I listen to the music through Windows Media Player and have that at 25 on the 100 scale. I get the full dynamic scale of sound when it turned down at a natural volume level like that.

  • @nashimus595 And I tell you, when I listen to Rush like that, everything is so clear down to the very last detail...Just the dynamic rawness of the sound is amazing, a good example is a song like 'Double Agent'. That song utterly blows it out of the water for quality.

  • 3:16 in alex lifesons part is sick i know its just a rythmic strum of some powerchords but its fucking fitting perfectly

  • @mikeweit his solo on this makes the hairs on my arms stand up

  • @mikeweit yeah i have this on dvd and i think i burned that part out with all the rewinding the dude just gets into it and so does neil peart.

  • @stangfever04 the rewinding whats that all about

  • @gratefuldank sorry dude i meant replay,i'm old school you know? LOL.

  • @mikeweit totally agree

  • @mikeweit he's a genius. this is why i thought it was silly when they said that alex felt left out in this era and felt he had to make way for the synth. but he really showed a different way of playing that is spectacular

  • @scat4u yea dude i felt the same, i dont mean to sound jaded, because Beyond The Lighted Stage was something awesome for Rush getting recognized, but to me this 80's lifeson sound/approach to guitar and album making was his most genius as a performer and solidified him as a true jack-of-all trades guitarist who happens to also be able to rip guitar solos like jimmy page/gilmour then into eddie van halen styles (check out the solo on kids gloves), then into 12 string open acoustic style 90s

  • @mikeweit yeah. think about how many different sounds and genres rush has crossed over the years. what other band in past or present has shown something like that?? now they want to put the fucking BEASTIE BOYS in the hall of fame. not that i have anything against them, because i like their music, but come the fuck on. you can't even argue that rush wasn't commercially successful as they have sold millions of albums. i know the holy trinity known as geddy, neil, and alex don't care though..

  • @mikeweit oh yeah!

  • @mikeweit yeah it is so sick, i just love that part of the song, such raw emotion

  • NP the best drummer ever !!!!!! no shit!!!

  • aahh Geddy Lee is moving around so much!

  • This video only gets better for me as the years go by...And it also made me love the song even more. Lots of dramatic camera angles and emotional resonance in the editing and the guys' playing.

  • Yup, this is definitely one of my all-time favourites!

  • Rush refuse to grow up

  • @sysrq120

do u mean tht in a good or bad way??

  • Damnit Rush! Don't you guys have a DVD of just your music videos!!!

  • @LightningCat315

The only one I can think of is Chronicles. This was a hidden video on that disc.

  • @darkpoet25 Ahh. I heard about Chronicles having a CD+DVD combo, plus saw it one time...Didn't actually know that it had music video though. Thanks for the heads up.

  • @LightningCat315 It only has a few videos on it: Closer to The Heart The Trees Limelight Tom Sawyer(studio version) Red Barchetta Subdivisions Distant Early Warning Red Sector A The Big Money Mystic Rythms Time Stands Still Lock and Key The Enemy Within(hidden) Afterimage(hidden) I would like to see all their music videos in one collection myself.
  • Best Canadian band ever arguably the best band ever.

  • creepy seeing them so young lol,,,,,yup afterimage

  • 3 people are afterimage

  • I have a video with its lyrics. please watch. thanks

  • Yes, a very underrated tracks - some of Peart's best lyrics,

  • Great song

  • I play this one on the drums, those off beat china patterns can be tricky!

  • 2 people don't feel the way he would.......

  • I am really getting into this song! Love it!!! God Bless RUSH!!!

  • Given the "popular" dreck @#$% they choose to recognize, I consider it a badge of honor that Rush isn't in the R&R Hall of Fame. @#$% 'em.

  • Comment removed

  • more energy captured in this track than in possibly any other Rush song. It is so raw

  • I love this song!

  • Maybe the idea of lost loved ones hits too close to home now, considering Neil's loss. Perhaps that is why this song is no longer played.

  • @Lughnerson Considering that in this song, the opening lyrics were dedicated to Neil's wife and daughter.
