this should be what music is all about like EJ spare his time to compose what music really is..not some craps. sounds sweet to the ears....YOUR HIGHNESS
I didn't think I'd ever say this, but overall, Eric Johnson is probably better than Eddie Van Halen. I say this knowing that Eddie laid down the law with "Eruption". Johnson is still better.
Try driving through the canyons of Eastern Oregon with this song on the speakers. See if you don't want to cry, folks. Hail Maestro Eric Johnson! Baron von Tone!
@worldcitizenforever Yeah bullshit. I love EJ. But he ripped off Hendrix's "May This Be Love" in this song. Hendrix also had a tone similar to this 20 years before this came out.
@metalliczombie So EJ "rippped off" Hendrix by using a tone "similar" to something used in one of Jimis songs? Does Hendrix have exlusive rights to this particular tone, or what? Saying this about a guy like EJ that has one of the most original tones and techniques in the world is kinda harsh imo...a bit funny really...love EJ too, but that comment was just plain silly.
@slados1 I said a similar tone. I never said he owned the "copyrights" to this tone. I'm just stating that Hendrix was able to get this tone with a max of 4 pedals and nobody else could have done that. This solo in this song also sounds directly influenced by "May This Be Love". There's nobody better to emulate than Hendrix.
@metalliczombie You said EJ "ripped off" Hendrix with this song, didn't you? And you also implied that using a similar tone to what Hendrix used a whole 20 years before this song came out was part of this supposed act of stealing other artists material and tone. Perhaps "ripped off" was simply a poor choice of words on your part, just sounded all wrong to me..
@slados1 Maybe "ripped off" was a strong phrase to use. I'm just saying that Johnson's awesome tone was also achieved by Hendrix over 20 years before. It was probably meant as an homage to Hendrix in some way given that Johnson is a mega Hendrix fanatic and also performs on the Experience Hendrix Tour. Either way both these guys are great.
Several observations on your comments, respectfully:
First, no artist creates in a vacuum. They take characteristics of those that inspired them and, if they're really good, amalgamate those characteristics in such a way as to create a style that sounds new. Hendrix combined the styles of Curtis Mayfield, Wes Montgomery, Albert King and other blues guitarists to create 'his' style. He DIDN'T play or combine musical notes in a way no other player ever had before him.
Hmmm ... I'm not sure why you'd say Hendrix "could play anything." I don't know of any classical, country, or true jazz, for example, ever played by Hendrix (he borrowed some basic characteristics of Wes Montgomery, but Hendrix was no jazz guitarist). If you analyze the melodic & rhythmic structure of Hendrix's music, you'll see he was a soul/blues player, period. He then took that amalgamation & added a unique combination of effects, distortion and feedback.
Second, we could say Hendrix "ripped off," to use your term, Clapton when he sat in with Cream one day & discovered Eric's new Marshall amps and switched over to them (from Fender & Vox).
Third, the sound he got owed a lot to playing a right-handed Strat strung upside down, making the high E string mellower and the low E brighter. He took that, played his amalgamation of Mayfield & others' licks/styles thru some effects pedals & Marshalls, and went ape w/feedback . That's it.
@Ken5244 Just because he used the same amps as Clapton doesn't mean he copied him. His music sounds nothing like Clapton, at all. Hendrix is original, Clapton isn't. I was saying that Johnson's tone sounds a lot like Jimi's. Not necessarily his equipment.
I didn't mean he copied Clapton's style. You said, "Johnson's awesome tone was also achieved by Hendrix over 20 years before." So I responded by pointing out that a key to Hendrix's tone, or overall 'sound,' was his use of Marshall amps. He never had that sound playing thru the Fender & Vox amps he used before. And he discovered those Marshalls by sitting in with Cream and playing thru Clapton's rig. My point is Hendrix didn't create the tone by himself, that's all. :-)
That may be true, but I might rephrase your sentence to say, "Nobody else got that tone in the 60s." It could've been "gotten," mostly, in the sense that the key equipment that made up his sound were the Vox wah wah pedal, the Arbiter Fuzz Face, the Univibe and, of course, Marshall amps. So, equipment-wise, the tools were there to create the sound.
What made Hendrix unique was how he PLAYED thru that equipment. The combination was new -- no doubt about it.
@Ken5244 Either way it's the same thing. Nobody else could get his tone, play like him, do all that flashy stuff, and still sing at the same time. He's head and shoulders above everyone else.
No, " ... could have gotten that tone ...." isn't the same as "... got that tone ...." As I pointed out, the equipment existed for others to use. And plenty did -- just not in the particular combination Hendrix did.
Re "head and shoulders above everyone else," I disagree but that's another subject. I think your hero worship of Hendrix has more emotion behind it than reason, but we all do that sometimes. I like a lot of Hendrix's playing; I just don't put him on a pedestal.
That's fine. We all have our favorite players. The last thing I'd add here is that you might wanna consider separating the man from the artist. As a person, he wasn't exactly a role model. He slept around with a lot of women, smoked dope and took a lot of LSD, and was by many accounts a violent drunk who assaulted women & friends a number of times when plastered. That doesn't detract from his playing ability, but it's part of why I don't put him on too high a pedestal.
@Ken5244 No one was a role model in those days. Clapton, Beck, Page, anybody. None of them were role models. If I was that famous and could get that much action I would sleep around too. I don't care if people use drugs, at all. It's not my deal but I could see how others like "recreational" drugs. He was also surrounded by thieves and so-called friends. I would lose my shit too if I was only aware of it when I was drunk.
I agree that a lot of artists back then weren't role models either (and many still aren't), but I don't justify bad behavior by pointing to others' bad behavior.
FWIW, I'm not aware of any particularly objectionable behavior on Beck's part.
Re sleeping around, I guess my morals differ from yours. Not much else to day there, I guess (no offense, of course).
I'm not into drugs either, but it bothers me when artists are either too weak or too untalented to make it without them.
Re Hendrix being surrounded by thieves & so-called friends, that was probably true. Whether or not the people he assaulted (while drunk) fit into that category, I simply don't know. I wasn't there. But if they were, then I'm with you -- few things bother me more than seeing some slimeball betray a friend's trust. Unfortunately, the rock music industry has always attracted crooks that take advantage of young artists' naivete and/or trust. Many sad stories there ....

Eric Johnson is THE greatest guitar player of our time, and one of the most elegant, tasteful songwriters on the planet. Thank you, Eric, whereever you are, for all of the enjoyment you've brought to us with your extraordinary gift! You are loved!
very true on what u say ndzordz.. eric's pieces should be written on books and other informative mediums. this one of a kind musician should be given a lot of credits for he has an incredible talent when it comes to song writing and creating music... hell yeah mr. johnson!!
great video, you catched the spirit of the song. great!. i have no words for eric johson. he is simply the best musician and songwriter i have ever seen. ill show this to my kids. thanks!
I bought Venus Isle in 1996 and it really got me through some hard times when I was younger. There are so many gorgeous and inspiring songs on the album, and this is just one of them. Still, I love this. Everything about this is love and relaxation.
We have to be proud because we're living in same generation with Eric Johnson.. In my opinion he's the greatest musician of all time.. I hope that after 200 years he'll be in the student's books as Mozart and Beethoven are in ours. Legend!!
@ndzordz Hey man I totally agree with your comment but we need to remember David Gilmour also, but being this is an Eric Johnson vid, I should leave other musicians out of the comments, just couldn't help myself. Peace to all, Surfer Joe
@sgtdarkness1 Hey Surfer Joe. Just remember, whenever we think about other musicians, compare who's "better", etc, we can't fully enter into what we're listening to & enjoy it. Music definitely is not about competition, every song & artist is a unique expression of spirit & stands on its own. David Gilmour is great, but I wouldn't be able to fully appreciate Eric's songs if I was thinking about him (or anyone else) at the same time... Give yourself up to the song & let it speak to you... Peace!
@bookguitarguy I hear u brother, its funny, I actually own an Eric Johnson signature acou/electric gitfiddle but am no where near his playing abilities. Eric is his own man and plays his style as he pleases, which is what every musician should do. All is well in the guitar universe.........Peace my friend.
Is EJ the most underrated guitarist and musician out there? I think so. I never heard this song, but all I can say is wow! Thanks so much for posting this!
@ndzordz yes. especially when these young kids are blinded by guys like vai, malsteen, gilbert and vomit metal guitarists. when i was growing up, i thought rock guitarists were gods! guys like van halen, randy rhodes. it wasn't until i started expanding my search and discovered that ej was thee most complete guitarist.
no, ej is far from the most complete guitarist. one of the most complete, but definitely not the most. i can name quite a few more complete than him. plus vai isn't metal and paul gilbert, rhandy rohads, and van halen are all excellent guitarists. calling them "vomit metal" is incredibly stupid.
@Fluffypopcicle i wasn't implying those guys were vomit metal guitarists. i said other vomit metal guitarists. as far as ej not being the most complete according to you, name me one that is more complete than eric. love to hear it your opinion. ej has tone, composition, melody, rhythm, harmony and plays virtually every style...except metal of course.
i can name a handful, but i will focus on one. shawn lane. shawn lane is technical unsurpassed and possibly technically unsurpassable. he has "blazing amazing phrasing" like paul gilbert once said and a handful of guitarists including buckethead, paul gilbert, rusty cooley, and michael romeo practically worship him. he plays jazz fusion, shred, and indian fusion. i can name quite a few genres that ej doesn't play, but i don't have enough room and buckethead plays more anayways.
you're comparing shawn lane and gay gilbert to eric johnson? yeah, those guys can shread but so can vai and malsteen. you call that music? you determine how a great a guitarist is based on speed? you might as well add michael angelo baito to the equation. i think ej is the best because of how he puts everything together within the context of his songs...songs you can actually listen to. but then again, some love ghostland observatory...if you can call that music.
instead of being musically ignorant and judging a guitarist by random shred vidoes wh don't you listen to their music? look up epilogue or lisa by shawn lane, it's a beautiful song. eric johnson himse;f said he wished he could solo like shawn lane now go and get a brain.
@Fluffypopcicle You're right. In my opinion, Vai, Satch, etc.. are technical but don't shine in the musical side. Shawn Lane is God to me, maybe more than EJ, Andy Timmons is incredible too, and they play with their souls. Don't get me wrong, there are Vai-satch good songs, with very interesting ideas, but don't touch my heart like EJ, Andy Timmons and Shawn Lane.
dont mean to disrespect shawn lane but has he written a song that you can actually listen to? not only is ej a great guitarist but his music is bad ass. that's the mark of a true artist. steve vai shreds but i have yet to hear one song i can listen to from beginning to end.
@voodooalchemy sure has--at least to me. like you, i can't stand vai. but that's neither here nor there...
some SL songs that I love: "Not Again," "Epilogue for Lisa," "Tri-7/5," "One Note At a Time," "Get You Back," etc etc etc. If you can't listen to those...hey, whatever floats (or sinks) your boat! EJ was one of Shawn's favorite guitarists, and I can hear the influence. I can also appreciate both of them for what they've done--given me hours upon hours of musical bliss!
@alspageddi I agree with voodoo in most cases. Shawn Lane's "Temporal Analogues of Paradise" is a very nice mutli-movement piece. Alot of the other music of his and all the other shredders just serves as a vehicle for lead guitar. Johnson's music is well composed, melodic, structural, and serves a purpose much more like a Hendrix song.
@TheElectromagnet Good for you! And as far as his songs being vehicles for a lead guitar...I disagree. He utilized the instrument the same way an orchestra would utilize the first violin. Just because it's the lead in the song doesn't mean there aren't lots of other things going on in the background. But it's obviously you like what you like, and I like what I like. No reason we have to defend or justify our tastes to others.
Nicely done! Good images to gaze upon while listening. Though, with this song, you could post a video of a cow taking a dump and it would stil shine like the stars. One of my favs.
Excellent Photos xyzkerry!!! Outstanding Song! Eric Johnson - THANK YOU!

Eric is his own man and plays his style as he pleases, which is what every musician should do. All is well in the guitar universe.........Peace my friend.

@voodooalchemy But rated enough by us.. people who knows what real music is. Right?
ndzordz 1 year ago
@ndzordz yes. especially when these young kids are blinded by guys like vai, malsteen, gilbert and vomit metal guitarists. when i was growing up, i thought rock guitarists were gods! guys like van halen, randy rhodes. it wasn't until i started expanding my search and discovered that ej was thee most complete guitarist.
voodooalchemy 1 year ago 2
@voodooalchemy
no, ej is far from the most complete guitarist. one of the most complete, but definitely not the most. i can name quite a few more complete than him. plus vai isn't metal and paul gilbert, rhandy rohads, and van halen are all excellent guitarists. calling them "vomit metal" is incredibly stupid.
Fluffypopcicle 1 year ago
@Fluffypopcicle i wasn't implying those guys were vomit metal guitarists. i said other vomit metal guitarists. as far as ej not being the most complete according to you, name me one that is more complete than eric. love to hear it your opinion. ej has tone, composition, melody, rhythm, harmony and plays virtually every style...except metal of course.
voodooalchemy 1 year ago
@voodooalchemy
i can name a handful, but i will focus on one. shawn lane. shawn lane is technical unsurpassed and possibly technically unsurpassable. he has "blazing amazing phrasing" like paul gilbert once said and a handful of guitarists including buckethead, paul gilbert, rusty cooley, and michael romeo practically worship him. he plays jazz fusion, shred, and indian fusion. i can name quite a few genres that ej doesn't play, but i don't have enough room and buckethead plays more anayways.
Fluffypopcicle 1 year ago
@Fluffypopcicle
you're comparing shawn lane and gay gilbert to eric johnson? yeah, those guys can shread but so can vai and malsteen. you call that music? you determine how a great a guitarist is based on speed? you might as well add michael angelo baito to the equation. i think ej is the best because of how he puts everything together within the context of his songs...songs you can actually listen to. but then again, some love ghostland observatory...if you can call that music.
voodooalchemy 1 year ago
@voodooalchemy
instead of being musically ignorant and judging a guitarist by random shred vidoes wh don't you listen to their music? look up epilogue or lisa by shawn lane, it's a beautiful song. eric johnson himse;f said he wished he could solo like shawn lane now go and get a brain.
Fluffypopcicle 1 year ago
@Fluffypopcicle You're right. In my opinion, Vai, Satch, etc.. are technical but don't shine in the musical side. Shawn Lane is God to me, maybe more than EJ, Andy Timmons is incredible too, and they play with their souls. Don't get me wrong, there are Vai-satch good songs, with very interesting ideas, but don't touch my heart like EJ, Andy Timmons and Shawn Lane.
jacobrodriguez1986 1 year ago
@jacobrodriguez1986 Amen! Shawn Lane is my favorite guitarist as well, with EJ and a select few others being close ties for second!
alspageddi 1 year ago
@alspageddi
dont mean to disrespect shawn lane but has he written a song that you can actually listen to? not only is ej a great guitarist but his music is bad ass. that's the mark of a true artist. steve vai shreds but i have yet to hear one song i can listen to from beginning to end.
voodooalchemy 1 year ago
@voodooalchemy sure has--at least to me. like you, i can't stand vai. but that's neither here nor there...
some SL songs that I love: "Not Again," "Epilogue for Lisa," "Tri-7/5," "One Note At a Time," "Get You Back," etc etc etc. If you can't listen to those...hey, whatever floats (or sinks) your boat! EJ was one of Shawn's favorite guitarists, and I can hear the influence. I can also appreciate both of them for what they've done--given me hours upon hours of musical bliss!
alspageddi 1 year ago
@alspageddi I agree with voodoo in most cases. Shawn Lane's "Temporal Analogues of Paradise" is a very nice mutli-movement piece. Alot of the other music of his and all the other shredders just serves as a vehicle for lead guitar. Johnson's music is well composed, melodic, structural, and serves a purpose much more like a Hendrix song.
TheElectromagnet 1 year ago
@TheElectromagnet Good for you! And as far as his songs being vehicles for a lead guitar...I disagree. He utilized the instrument the same way an orchestra would utilize the first violin. Just because it's the lead in the song doesn't mean there aren't lots of other things going on in the background. But it's obviously you like what you like, and I like what I like. No reason we have to defend or justify our tastes to others.
