I have to add my two cents. My favorite lineup was MK2, with Deep Purple In Rock my favorite album. Just listen to "No One Came"; great lyrics and a great riff that no one seems to remember.
So as I was saying . . . I love Deep Purple, but the things they did in "Concerto for Group and Orchestra", "In Rock", "Machine Head" and at many live concerto(especially Stockholm, Sweden 12 November 1970) were simply the best stuff I've heard from any group from any era - ALL Mk2 stuff.
So my vote is in ~ Mk2 for me.
Having said that; I can very easily listen to Mk1 ALL DAY LONG but am limited on Mk3 and can't cop anything they've done after 1989!!!!
In 1971 as an 9 year old, I remember my father playing 'DP' cassettes in the car with the speakers blasting full bore through the back of my skull. I had to listen to everything from 'Shades' to 'Concerto' & then 'In Rock' before 'Machine Head' came out a couple of years later.
Anyway, I used to block my ears & complain. Dad simply said "One day, this will be all you ever listen to!" How right he was.
I love Deep Purple but let me say this . . . . . . SORRY ~ see next comment for closure!!!
who ever dont recognise mark 1 as deep purple.maybe its time to break your mark 2 records specially stop playing smoke on the water.i mean mark 2 was great as much as it was mark 1.but most people when you talk about purple they think about smoke on the water.who ever saying mark 1 is great is because you either way listen things from its roots.and have a wider open knowledge in music.
Funny comment coming from some braindead fool that listens to trance music. You are too stupid to appretiate good rock music anyway, so there is no loss really.
Jeez SUPER -just because Jon Lord accidently wrapped his cock around your mothers tonsils and yanked her eyes out through her mouth while simultaneously blasting a couple of quarts of steaming jizz into her mouth is no reason to be so hostile...even you have to admit how funny it was watching you worriedly ran to her side while bubbling semen poured from her empty eye sockets and lathered your hair like a shampoo comercial gone wrong.
It is unknown where Rod Evans currently is. After he left Deep Purple in 1969, he was in Captain Beyond. Around 1973 or so, he left that band and became a doctor. In 1980, he took part in a fake Deep Purple and was sued, losing his royalties to the first three D.P. albums. Since then, his whereabouts have been unknown. Many, many people including myself would like to know where he's at...
Rod is still alive, some said he died in a drowning accident a few years back, but that is a lie. Rod does not live and work in California at some Hospital, as some claim, at least not anymore. His current wherabouts is a mystery, and within the "inner circle" of the Deep Purple fanbase, those who know where he lives, keeps it to themselfs, and respect Rod that all he wants is to be left alone. Ian Paice said a interview a few years ago, that Rod struggled with alcohol and his health in general.

Could somebody explain me more about this, for me confusing things, at the time when this album was made, Ian Gillan was singer of DP, or.....And, what is MK1, etc....When did Rod Evans sing in DP...Thank you!
Everybody are welcome to send me informations here or if is more on my inbox....
Mk1 is Deep Purple with Rod Evans as a singer and Nick Simper as a bassist. When Rod Evans was replaced by Ian Gillan and Nick Simper was replaced by Roger Glover, Mk2 was born. "Mk" is just a term used to describe which lineup the band was in at a given time.
Thank you vary much...I would like to know, when did it happen, because I though that Ian Gillan was The First Singer of DP, and I would bet that I heard some his songs from '68, or a little earlier...
well... I believe MK1 was with rod evans and nick simper, then, MK2 with roger glover and ian gillan, then, MK3 with david coverdale and glenn hughes, then, MK4 with tommy bolin on guitar, and the history comes to the reunion with the MK2 line-up, then with joe lynn turner MK5 and back to gillan to the MK2 and later with the MK6 with steve morse and now MK7 with don arey on keyboards.... sorry for my bad english, Regards... Danny Rock.
Yeah lol. Its funny how it works out chronologically. DP has always been a great band throughout their lineups, but I still think they got progressively weaker as the lineups went by.
Man...mk.I has to be the second best DP version, aside from mk.II,atleast in my opinion.I first got Shades of,finally i got Taliesyn, and still tryin to find Deep Purple III!
Deep Purple the album is not as hard to find as you may think it is. Used record shops, Amazon. If you really want it, it's out there. And a damn good album too at that. Worth your time seeking it out.
I erased your "-1" from the vote count. Though I'm a huge Mk 1 fan, I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I know plenty of people who prefer Mk III and that's fine.
Thanks for the feedback. I like Mk1 and Mk2 a lot more than Mk3 though. I think Purple lost it at that point, but the early stuff is still great. If any of you have heard their first self-titled album, give it a listen. Great stuff on there
Rod Evans sounded like Elvis.
I wish MRK 1 stayed together my favorite Purple.
The greatest investment I made was ordering Purples first three albums from Amazon.

Well, as a matter of fact, he did.
And I don't think this is a stupid son. It was written by Jimi Hendrix. And if you don't like it, you shouldn't watch and/or listen to it.

Love MK I. Definately the most under-rated line-up even if not the best
