I always have to smile of her turning the v vowel into a b vowel being hispanic where they don't have a v vowel as I understand it. But what a fabulous singer she was!

Always makes me laugh when people think of Caballe having a minimalist, lyric voice. Her voice was fucking HUGE. Listen to that final B. It engulfs the whole room,
What a remarkable singer, my introduction was through Barcelona and I have now viewed so many performances and enjoyed them. What a shame it took me so long to appreciate this wonderful performer.
I love her engagement with the piece and her multi-dimensional or textured voice. Shame about the recording quality - I had to really mess around with the silly little "soundboard" we get.
Having listened to Kiri te Kanawa, Maria Callas, etc, etc, Monstserrat is by far the better. Her voice is incomparable, pure silk, effortless supreme talent. Truly arouses emotion and goose pimples!!
Sheer perfection, amazing breath control, effortless high and low notes filled with emotion and feeling. Her voice floats, lingers and fades away like a magical and colorful angelical song.
what a video, monserrat is unique . to me she is the cleanest voice in the opera needless to mention her great interpretation in her roles. clear voice and neat interpretation
caballe sings and feels what she is singing, which is more than one could say about most "opera superstars" nowadays...not to forget about her perfection, tenderness and her ability to produce the best pianissimo the world has ever heard.caballe es y será una artista única y memorable, con un nivel único.
It would be very boring if everyone sang like Callas. She was unique. One Callas is enough. Same, ONE Caballe is enough. In the morning play Callas, that will wake you up, siesta with lovemaking Caballe, sleeping at night, Sutherland.
Love your comparison except I would wake up to, go through the day with and go to sleep with Sutherland. Have an innocent affair once and again with Caballe, Callas and Tebaldi.
Brava! Thank you for this wonderful video. I adore M.C. I agree with the NY Times: Callas + Tibaldi = Caballe! Artists at this level are like Olympians, they are ALL great; it comes down to style & personal preference. For me, M.C. is the ultimate voice. Plus remember singers are human, not machines, they have good & not so good days. I love Caballe's hand movements.. I think she uses them beautifully for dramatic effect , (especially the crossed arms) -- Do they aid the singer?
I have reacently found, that i can learn a lot about siging positions from her hands. Look at them clother. ofcourse, not all moovements are about singing position (especialy crossed hands on the neck:))
I find it offensive how people can interpret a beautiful soprano voice singing a beautiful aria as 'singing for herself'. People are never going to come to a consensous on who is the greatest soprano. People have different criteria which makes 'The best' singer, embrace the good and beauty in each aria, learn from it. Let it make you happy... not bitter or vindicitve or spitefull. Just wanted to get that out there
Your harsh remark on one of the greatest divas of the modern era does not show your knowledge, but your bigotry and ignorance. Judge her by her career as a whole. Listen carefully to the recordings of her work; there are plenty and easily available, if you have the 'ear'.
Her performance is magnificent. But anyone criticizing her voice from this one recording should listen to some of the other samples of her singing on here. Any faults that you might think are from her performance are actually due to the quality of the recording itself. Footage of music and even speaking from the black and white era doesn't always age well, and it's especially harsh on female voices because of the higher pitch. Most old films you are "cleaned up" but clips like these often aren't
This is my favourite aria, i've listened to many recordings by many singers and this is without doubt the best, Stunning and moving. the final "L'Aspetto" is perfect, Mme. you are a Goddess.
I totally believe that she's an exotic beauty of a very far land that is crying for a lover! That's the magic of opera, and Monserrat is a sorceress that mesmerizes with her incredible voice and passion!
I know that this is an unsophisticated way to judge the merit of a performance, but I had goosebumps from beginning to end. She's absolutely wonderful.
No comparison from today can be made. I swear, the singers rush and don't know how to project feelings in the right part. Caballe did a great job at the turn (Mi metto la sul...)
This is GREAT...cruddy film and crappy audio notwithstanding. Full marks.
Fight amongst yourselves if you disagree. Life is too short--you should enjoy instead of carp and whine. Because really, no one cares what the naysayers think. It doesn't make you famous or give you a good voice to criticize others, hiding behind a keyboard.
I think the culprit here is poor audio recording. The sound is uneven all over, especially when she's louder. I doubt Caballe was flat, like it may seem in a couple of parts here.
constructive criticism is good but comments like "stupid!" over something you probably do not appreciate (like this clip for instance) is totally uncalled for.
She really is fabulous. I saw her yesterday in live. She is not as good as years and years back. But if 75years old lady can still walk on a stage and perform, it is something. She is charming personality, and it was very emotional experience she gace us yesterday.
I think Puccini would be very proud to hear Caballe's performings...Just listen to some of her interviews, and you'll get that the music comes from within, it is not only a gift, but a reason for living this life...We love you Montsy, for all the music you gave us, for all of the feelings you revealed from within us...
I've always been a Caballe fan. Her voice has a very special quality that I just cant find in any other soprano. And those piannisimi! She does a great job in this area I thik, though at the begining she had problems with the entonation.

Sorry, i'm going to desagree with most here. Caballe is good, but her voice is way too heavy and inflexible for this aria. The best thing is her ability with pianissmi notes, and they're aren't many here. Her final note is strong, but still like a lead weight over the orchestra.
To all who have posted replies: VOICES DO AGE! It's not that her artistry and talent are any less, it's simply that things happen to the voice as one ages. Anyone trained in singing knows this much. Chemical changes affecting the body can change one's voice, and aging changes the voice. Quit worshiping the past and enjoy what she offers now. There are flat notes, there is tension, the voice is older, but G**D** she's still one of the artists of the century!
Tension on her face??That's bullcrap, face muscles play a role in singing, any great singer got those "tensions", and emotions contribute to it....whatever Wonderful!
Of course she can, and did. Nobody is perfect all the time, everybody has a bad time.
Opera watchers must follow closer the singers to understand that. Not just listen to the studio recordings.
There's a record of Caballé where she breaks a high C, and says a very very bad word (not reproduceble over here)... She keeps perfect, anyway. That's the real life.
I always have to smile of her turning the v vowel into a b vowel being hispanic where they don't have a v vowel as I understand it. But what a fabulous singer she was!

@siolaaduob this is not a fashion show, nor is it a weight watchers meeting.
her appearance and weight is not the issue here.
more than that: heavy weight supports the voice, giving it deepness of "body".
just remember Callas after loosing weight, also lost the "body" of her incredible beautiful voice and never gained it back.
Caballe is such a sweet tender person and a Diva of opera.
why not just listen and enjoy.

I think Price is the best Cio Cio San. She's the only one who captured the tragic fragility of the character...But Caballe and Callas are next!

Personally I like Price, but in this role I prefer bot Callas and Caballé.

She's not perfect, but i liked it very much, she's so emotional in her movements and expressions.

Tension on her face??That's bullcrap, face muscles play a role in singing, any great singer got those "tensions", and emotions contribute to it....whatever Wonderful!

Caballe can do nothing wrong.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
all the tension on her face weighs her voice down.
