Awful chorus. I thought the Chinese could do better. Even the choir of Shanghai Conservatory is better. The orchestra was okay, I think the problem was upon the conductor - not his techniques but his aggressive interpretation of Mozart.
It is simply awful. The choir is yelling, often it is out of tune, the beginning is heavy and square without any feeling of style and no mysterious quality at all. The conductor waves like crazy. The music is not supposed to be aggressive. Sorry, fellas, go hear some better recording, this is just hideous. The pope is being polite, of course.
I was also going to say something nasty to you for saying the performance is hideous, but you're at least partly right. The first instance of "et lux perpetua" is indeed horrible. The soloists are much better, though. The orchestra is fine, too.
@s: And "politeness" extends to music that has no business being offered in a Catholic Church at all. Using Mozart in any liturgical context is part and parcel of the error that if ideas, books, Music, Anything can stay around long enough it is therefore "classical" and Traditional, and therefore OK for Church too. Mozart certainly hasn't changed his mind since 1791, when he died as an ardently anti-Catholic, 33rd degree Mason. The changes brought in since '68 haven't fixed his Masses, either.
