Just wanted to say an infinite thank you for introducing me both to Weiss and Robert Barto. I've picked up 5 of the 10 Barto volumes of Weiss lute sonatas in the past 10 days. I'll get the rest soon. Not enough time in the day to listen. Just incredible. Do you know anything on the specifics of the woods in this lute? I would guess an ebony fretboard and spruce top but I'm sure you can tell I'm a guitar player talking here. No idea about characteristic lute woods. Well, thanks again.
What kind of lute is that? By the way, the music he plays is incredible... please answer me... I want to play this music too...!!! Regards from México
WOW... I know how bloody good Barto is but he still continues to blow my mind. This is nothing short of incredible. Thanks again and always for the posts kidneykutter!
@Eldejot, Segovia plays the guitar: a far more widely available, less expensive instrument with far more teachers and instructional material. Also the guitar is a bona fide living instrument meaning music is still regularly written for it by amateurs, professionals, even kids. I do like the lute but this is the current reality.
Wonderful sound and subtle changes in articulation. I think this is the best performance of Baroque lute I've seen. Very seamless playing and most importantly very musical playing.
He is such a virtuoso and the music comes to life! Thank you for posting these, kidneykutter; it is possible to notice an influence, Weiss to Bach but in which direction is not obvious. At 21 seconds begins a little motive heard in a Brandenberg Concerto...
The composers did meet, and afterwards Bach had two special harpsichords built to emulate the sound of the lute. Many of Bach's "lute suites" seem to have been composed on these instruments.
Number 36 in d minor. The other movements of his in d minor that I have uploaded (allemande, bouree, menuet) are all from the same sonata. Again, it's available on Naxos on his Weiss disc number 8.
It's marevellous to see Barto's hands dancing on the strings of his lute! Thanks to kidneykutter for this wonderful video. But how could you have these videos of Barto recording Weiss? Do you have more videos?
Bob provided these videos to me. I've posted the ones he asked me to. With any luck I may have more this summer after the next Lute Society of American Festival in Cleveland.
Kidneykutter, thanks for answering. I'm really looking forward to see new videos from this great poet of the lute. Do you know if he is going to play in Europe somewhere in the next future? I'd really like to see him playing live...

I have every one of his recordings. I can't believe Barto doens't have the following of Segovia. His playing is perfect.
theseus816 2 years ago
Which makes me wonder why Segovia has any following at all. Seems quite unfair, doesn't it?

what instrament is it
is it a gutiar
nabisco561 2 years ago
No: Its called a baroque lute. If you hear the same piece played on a guitar, it would sound very different.
ZoieRag 2 years ago 2
Complete mastery. The piece itself and the mastery of Robert Barto are something that make this performance totally epic.

Sylvius Leopold Weiss is amazing!
Around 650 of Weiss works have survived-
The largest collection in lute music history.
His music is so beautiful.
