Hey do u want to know why the gipsies are great?? because also they have never studied the flamenco as well they can play it, for that reason they are great and they play also better than some flamenco's guitarrist, I'm a hugr fan of flamenco but is the true
Tomatito has done some records like "Spain Again" witn Michel Camilo wich are not flamenco.
Most of his recordings are flamenco, one of the most important guitarrist in it.
Why do you think he is not flamenco? He comes from one traditional family and has been thought on it since a little boy, and has travelled the world with camaron, duquende, el cigala and many others.
Saying tomatito does not play flamenco is like saying miles davis doesn´t know jazz.
It is gypsis who came from india, not flamenco. there are gypsis all over the world and none of them play flamenco, but the ones in south Spain.
Flamenco originated in Andalucia (where i´m from) as a mixture of morish, jewish and spanish northen music (la jota) wich is dated 300 years before gypsis arrived to spain through barcelona.
Even though they played a very important part in it´s evolution.
The most important thing in flamenco is "el compas" wich is usually, and depending on the style(palo), a 12 beat cadence that only occurs in this kind of music.
Manitas plays 4/4 cadence like any other musician in europe.
The Spanish that left to france where the ones in Barcelona, wich already had a very, very limited knowledge of flamenco, playing only rumba( a 4/4 degradation of flamenco)
Also the technical knowledge of manitas is very, very, very, very poor compared to Rafael Riqueni, Vicente Amigo, Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar, Jeronimo Maya, Pepe Habichuela, Juan Habichuela, Chicuelo, Juan Maya Marote, Niño de Pura, Niño Josele, Tomatito, Gerardo Nunez, Moraito Chico, Rafael Amador....... Shall i continue? there are even hundreds of none professional like me that play better than this fake
Ja ja ja de nuevo contigo!!! Esos que mencionas!!! Siempre siempre siempre!!! Cantan lo mismo lo mismo!!! Por eso no triunfan en el mundo entero!!! Lo mismo canta uno que el otro!!! No componen nadita de nada!!! Solo cantan lo del otro!!! Acaso te vas a atrever a negarlo y a contradecirme???!!!
Si no afina!!! De nada sirve!!! Estamos hablando de lo más importante o sea número uno!!!ja ja já!!! Lo que haces por denigrar al gran manitas!!!
Even though only Spanish Gypsies play flamenco, their Indian origin must have played a part, it seems to me. For example, "el compas" is like a mini-version of the rythmic cycles in Indian classical music. Nowhere else in Europe do you find anything like that (to my knowledge). Although, that may have come from the moorish influence, as you mentioned.

you are completely right about that, but this is also true about non-gypsis that didn´t study flamenco.
Not all flamenco traditional family are gypsis, nor all gypsis play flamenco.
I don´t belive in racism. a black man can play flamenco, but it is got to be flamenco ta call it flamenco.

Entiende loco entiende!!!
El flamenco de esta región es único!!!
No le pide nada a nadie!!!

Flamenco style is perfectly studied by musicologists since 1850, many, many, many years before Franco was born.
Try searching for Agujetas de Jerez, Chano Lobato, Rancapino, and maybe after a few moths listening to them you´ll understanding.

but I doubt that, I don't think middle-eatern music uses cycles in the same way-not sure though...

Andalusi music was already divided in "palos" 24 for of them.
they were supossed to be one for each hour of the day.
The ai,aiaiaai is still heard on them.
Do morocans come from gypsis? that would be a great teory! ;)
Jota+andalusian music+jewish music=flamenco
The same word Flamenco is thought to come from the arab (worker without land)
Gypsis are one of the most important part of flamenco, but they did not invent it, as Django Reinhart did not invent swing music.
