One of the oldest secrets in NES video games history. But watch out, if you get more than 99 lives, your game is actually over, atleast on the NES version. I never knew they carried this over into the GB version. But I used to use this all the time. I'd always warp straight to world 3 lol!

World 5-1 - stomp one of the two Green Koopa Paratroopas to get the 1UPs. However, I consider this to be one of the hardest places to get the 1UPs as you not only have to contend with two Green Koopa Paratroopas to kill but there's also some Bullet Bill Cannons firing Bullet Bills and they'll do so if you're within their range.

World 5-2 - There's actually three places where this trick can be done. However, the other two ways are only unlocked after you've beat the game once.

Now that Amateur Hour is over, Koopa Troopas aren't the only ones that can be used for the 1UP Shell trick. In some spaces, Koopa Paratroopas and Buzzy Beetles can also be used for the trick. Also, to be nice, I'm going to give a list of places in SMB, VSMB, ANNSMB, SMB2J, and SMBS where this trick can be done. Here's the beginning of the list:

SMB: World 3-1, near the end of the level, stomp either one of the two Green Koopa Troopas to obtain the 1UP.

It's probably an overflow error. Your life counter hits the maximum value and, because nobody thought it would happen, nothing stops the game from trying to add another life. Depending on how it's stored, that wraps it around to either zero or, worse, a negative number slightly larger than the maximum value.

I believe in this case the max is 127 and getting one more life puts you at -128. On death, it probably checks if your lives are less than 1 rather than equal to 0.

You can do it in world 8 level 2, you've only got one shot at the beginning because you have to be big + it involves jumping over or under the first jumping turtle, then jumping on the edge of the 3rd block to bounce off the 2nd jumping turtle to kill the cloud attacking thing, and then you have to jump on the 2nd jumping turtle before it gets past the blocks. You can also do it again at the end of the level + you can get a free life on every retry by jumping on the spring near the beginning
