  • To anyone, and more so guys, who think a series like this is too "girly" or "everyone is a lesbian"....just give it a try. Anime in the 90s WAS better and this is one of the best. This is coming from someone who has watched old anime series from the 70s up until a lot of new ones now and the 90s had a lot of good shows...but they all are overshadowed by crap like DBZ because it was on TV and more people watched it growing up.

  • Considering I'm a boy, even if people do not want to take time off to watch a show with Yuri and Bishonen themes, look on the bright side at least no one will be able to overrate this show like Naruto.

  • Its been a while since I watched Utena, but to explain the ending. Anthy and her brother was trapped in a curse and once in a while, they were given an opportunity to break it. Every time this opportunity comes, her brother will make a feeble attempt then give up. The way to break the curse was for the prince to sacrifice his own life but Anthy brother never figured this out. Utena sacrificed her life for Anthy, thus breaking the curse

  • So Akio is the bad side of Dios right?

  • There's a city named Utena in my country!^^

  • i might have to watch it again. But to me Utena became a " prince" to save Anthy * personally i dont like women being slapped around * they developed a strong bond * definitely not yuri* every person that Utena faced had to in some way grow up. * hence revolution* all except for Akio. if i missed anything please tell me. all in all i enjoyed watching it.

  • where can i watch the movie in japanese that's subbed?

  • This anime is by far the deepest psychological mind screw I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. I love it beyond compare. It's such a goody.

  • good video, and thanks for links you added :)

  • ok im gonna say it im in LOVE with utena she is one of the reasons i've tured she is my dream women

  • this anime was definitely one of the best from the 90s! definitely a mindfuck at it's finest! the depth of this series rivals evangelion even. before I even knew what this series was about, the thing that got me was the beautiful art.

  • I love this anime even though I don't completely understand it. The movie is very good. Also I like the relationship of Utena and Anthy. I love the creepy look on Anthy's face in the middle video (2nd opening?)

  • this seems like an anime tht would waste my time

  • Whoa...you put some great thought into this. Utena is probably the most complicated and symbolic anime I have ever watched, and it could easily be developed into a literary text. Good work here.

  • Wow

I didn't know she split him in two, thanks for answering!

  • So the prince who "turned" utena into a prince was Anthys brotherr? someone please reply if you know the answer :(

  • @yellogurl3 If you're referring to the tale when Utena was rescued, I'd venture to say yes, it was Dios, before Anthy split him into two people. If you are talking about the sword/power of Dios that Utena gains in duels, then that'd be the good half of Dios, but yes, still Anthy's brother.

  • I swear that i cried at the end cause it was sooo sad. It is my fav anime!!!

  • even if the two of us are ever torn apart - the picture of anthy / uthena hands remind me of the last episode when they hold hands and then - take my revolution - that´s what utena did in the end, she showed the path to anthy but was anthy who made the choice XD, i love UTENA

  • I love this anime! But I can't find it anywhere and I want to watch it again :(

  • The guys turn into girls and the girls turn into the guys. Im cso confused! @.@

  • I love this anime <3 :3

It's too bad that one can't find the DVD's anywhere anymore -cough- except for like 300 dollars. It was such an important part of my adolescence. It's definitely one of the best animes (in my opinion, the best and my absolute favourite).

I agree--the songs are there to add to the story rather than just as pretty music. I love all the duel songs, especially Juri's duel songs. -claps-

Although Missing Link is an amazing song too. I think it's the most haunting one.

  • when i was 4 this was my fav! :D

  • Im really loving this Anime, im watching it on Demand on my TV. so far, im on episode 19 i think.

  • lol I remember watching the first episode of this and actually getting EVERY part of the plot from the opening.

  • so this is yuri?

    o.o

  • ughhh i hate people who do this. my friend watched like 7 minutes of the anime and concluded that everyone at the school was a lesbian and the show was not worth watching.

sorry, no offense to you kikyogal. the anime has some yuri themes, but is far from a 'yuri'.

  • It's more like "everything, except made DEEP, deconstructed, subverted, deconstructed again, and then made even DEEPer."

In other words, it's nigh perfect.

  • I fail to see how someone can think that Utena is pretentious. Half the time it doesn't take itself seriously.

  • This is very true. Practically everything involving Nanami was hilarious/adorable. On the other hand, when it did take itself seriously (everything with Akio, on the other hand?), it was dead serious and extremely intense. The ending was crazy and filled with WHAM moments.

  • @Avessan I dunno if you know, but Utena has Yuri in it's purest, truest sense. People usually don't understand the strong sexual themes in Utena. Yuri isn't what the hentai lovers make us think. By saying it isn't Yuri, you're erasing half of the content. Yuri is just a storyline about girls that have an attraction for each other, and believe me, there's that attraction in the anime, along with other types. Also, it's purely symbolic. If ppl give it a bad connotation, they need to mature...

  • @Avessan most of the girls in this anime are too busy perving after their brothers to be lesbians

...but the ones who aren't doing that are pretty much lesbians

  • LMAO! XD Noooooooo

  • I'm convinced the opening is from Anthy's viewpoint. You might see it as Utena's, but when you think of it it's more logical that it's Anthy who thinks all that. (She's locked up in her role as the Rose Bride.) The ending of the series is more or less Utena's point of view - she desires truth and justice.

I'm not sure what to tie the credits of the movie to, though.

  • @ 2:40 I want to know what the significance of them both thinking of themselves as princesses with that mysterious prince is b/c that doesn't help me entirely know how they ended up as a romantic couple. Could anyone help me? [haven't seen anime]

  • MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD : long story short the mysterious prince is the one Utena is talking about in her story (at the beginning of the episode). He is also end of the world and Anthy's brother. Utena falls in love with him, and Anthy knows he can never be her prince but wants him anyway. Basically he's an evil bastard, I think that's close enough.

  • Thank you :)

  • You're welcome ;)

  • this serie is ful of sexual simbolism. in the op, whe utena appears is near a tower, and when anthy appear is near a door. (penis/vagina(

  • The opening basically sums up the series lol. The ending...well more forshadowing

  • Finally a sane person!

(is kinda tired of people whing about not understanding RGU... It can be confusing, but when common sense is put in to use... It's clear to understand)

  • wow. thats changed alot! it makes more sence now!!! hehe!!

  • Utena was a masterpiece of music and symbols, not every1 is able to apreciate it's meaning or value, all I can say is that while it was almost an underground anime on the west it was an epic one in Japan.

  • they are..its a huge part of it

  • I personally will argue that the credits will give pretty substantial evidence that the two fall in love in the end.

  • I really like the music on this show.

  • This is amazing, thank you :3 RGU is my over-all favorite because of this complex wonderful story, which has so many sides.

In my opinion, Utena really became a Prince, a 'grown-up' (seeing as she left the academy, which represents childhood) because she was always noble, always trying to save Anthy and free her (the other were selfish and unnoble, trying to win the Bride just to get the power got get what they want, like spoiled kids)

And you're so right, the songs sum it up perfectly n_n

  • Wow it does make everything clearer... Utena was able to save Anthy because she only cared for Anthy (sure she had her friends and stuff) and wasn't distracted by anything else. This is why it is HER that brings the revolution, because every other character can't cope with something in their life (Juri regarding Shiori, Saionji regarding his competitiveness with Touga) and it all prevents them to get a move on and change the world, thought at the end they seem a little more at peace.

  • And i'm pretty sure that was Dios' goal by giving Utena that ring, so that Anthy would have someone actually able to grow up with ''nobility'', someone that would help Anthy throught the end.

I'm pretty sure Akio was aware that Utena had someething special, explaning why he manipulated everyone to get Utena (like in the manga), unaware what the real goal of the revolution was.

  • it doesnt matter if u fucking like the song or not. it does summarize, its in a poetic rhetoric in lyrical form retard. every needs to stop saying 'the story's messed up" because you sound like a dumbass. all animes has their 'messed up' moments. naruto-sasukes family got killed by his brother

dbz: goku dies all the time...all series are fucked up, thats what strengthens the characters and makes the story shit wit.

  • im talking to the people that said that not u steffiereggie or anyone who liked the series, just the people that contridicted you guys. thank you much for posting this.

  • its just stating an opinion about likeing the song jeesh o_o

  • Someone ELSE who gets the intense symbolism in Utena!

The only reason why I think the anime ending was sad was that the others weren't able to exit the prison that the academy was.

  • Actually, a little revolution happened inside everyone (except Akio) which is why Anthy disagreed with him when he said Utena failed to bring a revolution.

If you look around my response to Nano022289X here in the commentary of this video, you'll see the list I made :)

Of course, greatest revolution was Anthy leaving Ohtori =)

  • In both the movie and the anime, Akio willfully remained a living corpse inside his coffin, which to me means that he basically refused to see the possibility for change.

  • Not only that but the reason in the movie that Akio could not find the "Key" he ranted about before stabbing Anthy, means Utena was no longer a pawn in a game for anyone as well as another "free ride" for Akio anymore

but she gave her self to Anthy and only Anthy

    a key to one's heart

I almost got the notion of a subtle feeling of giving one's virginity to a lover IE utena to anthy.

  • that's why they both broke free, they fought akio together this time, anthy finally found utena, and they realized their true love for each other and the will to move on in life, --with each other.

  • Wow, nice overview about the key, I never gave it that much thought in both the movie AND the series (the key was the sword in the series which Akio broke)

  • I agree with anacondatiger. very well played!!!

You're one of the very few people that actually GET IT!! I used this video in one of my English classes and my professor didn't get it at all. So..looks like I was right!

  • You probably are one of the few who actually understand the Utena symbolism in the series, songs, and I assume movie. Very well done. For an Utena fan you make me proud!

  • I think you did great in pointing that out. I think I got the meaning of the story from the second ending scenes, and to the jerkoff who was saying it sucked, it isn't like you made them anyway, but they are better than anything he or she could do.

    Erin

  • *Slaps forehead* Oh brother, did you read the details I gave? I tried dissecting the meanings of the song, and from the songs themselves (meaning of these songs) you can get the full story of the anime itself.. There are 4 links, see 3rd link.

  • Wow, the details you gave were really astute! :D I knew that SKU was full of layers upon layers of meaning, but I never really thought that hard about the opening and ending credits! However, I have to detract a point from you for writing "pigment", the word's actually "figment"...with an "F", y'know...n_n;

  • That's cool but I had the complete opposite reaction. The anime series was awesome if extremely disturbing. The movie was just ridiculous. However, the movie was very beautiful to look at.

  • Well, we have our different opinions....

  • Well, fans of Utena usually say comments like that, about the movie being messed up n "WTF Utena turned in2 a car!"

1st of, the anime itself is made of pure "SYMBOLISMS" everything there isn't suppose to be literally taken (Like Anthy being stabbed by 10K swords, wouldn't you think she would have died by that? So will Akio? And if you asked, no Utena DIDN'T DIE.. :P)

Utena being turned into a car and Anthy the driver, it means that Utena can help show Anthy the way, but it's up to her to DRIVE

  • The reason Ikuni (Director of Utena) made Utena into a car, was because 'princes' saving 'princesses' from an evil villain in a sword fight or something like that, is so COMMON, so he wanted to change it a bit, he said so in the interview.

  • Man i never knew that the ending meant that much. i just thought utena survived those swords andanthy just went to look for her. by the way what does it mean when the swords strike utena?

  • Hmm, actually I still haven't gone thorough with the last episode, so swords striking her are a mystery to me.. But I'll get to it soon! n_n

As for ending, you can also see everyone left the coffin, (except for Akio, who unnoticeably thought nothing happened)

  • *Kozue is playing the piano! (OMG! LOL!) but Miki is not paying attention to it, means he has moved on from the past, and the blonde kid is learning to be mature..

*Nanami's brother won the duel! But Nanami is calm and not "Ohh, BROTHER!!" means she has gotten over her obsession with her bro, and the two guys are friends again.

*Juri and Shiori are friends :)

*Wakaba is not a sidekick anymore, and all clingy to a friend.. She is now independent.

  • And as for himemia, she left the school(in reality her coffin) in search for utena, thats a preety good ending. Oh yeah come to think of it heres my theory over the swords:

the swords represented Himemias pain, and so when she was liberated from her pain because of utena, utena became the vesel for that pain, and so himemia left to free her from that pain.

  • Hmm, but why would pain be transferred? I don't think that's it..

I think the 1000 swords hit Anthy *again* cause her bro had no concern to her, so it repeats *again*

As for Utena getting hit by 1000 swords, she thought she didn't get to save Himemiya, so the swords represented her failure.. I guess..

As for Utena's tear being the key to open the gate.. Could it have meant that the key to Anthy's grave is her heart? :)

She did say, she was only truly happy when she was with Himemiya.. n_n

  • Dang youre better at this stuff than i am!!

  • I think the swords where the million swords of hate, which represented humanities feelings betrayal from the prince being locked away. The prince being taken away from them caused them anger; by Anthy locking away Dios she became his 'prince,' by saving him.

When Utena became princely enough herself, the swords found a more noble thing to hate, and their grudge was passed on to her.

Although, none of this mattered until Anthy was willing to let herself be saved.

  • They were the swords of human hatred. In fairy tales, a girl can only either be a princess or a witch and since Anthy's prince is now the End of the World, she is a witch. She is experiencing a hatred that supposedly accompanies the experience of being a woman without a man (as Touga said, "all girls are Rose Brides.")

    That's all I can guess.

  • XD woah, I knew the ending meant something but damn. dude ur interpritation is great!

  • Thank you! n_n

  • Actually, I'm thinking whether the "You still just can't see anything" also correlates to what Anthy said to Akio at the end.

  • From what I heard, you're usually not suppose to get everything in your first watch.. The more you watch it, the more the viewer is surprised how much he/she missed.. :D

  • I'm sure there's more meaning to these OP/ED than what I interpreted it.. Don't let the director's comments of 'nothing much' fool you, there IS a lot going on in every series.. EVERY song, EVERY episodes, EVERY colors or items or actions, there IS a meaning far deeper than usually regarded (Not sure about Nanami fillers, lol)

  • Nanami fillers, some of them, discuss some of the teen issues, I think. The egg laying could actually be talking about teen pregnancy, and the cowbell, well, one being that it shows Anthy can be a bitch if she wants, and another shows the consequence of being a fashion victim.

  • Lol, yes but of couse! n_n

I was thinking about the elephant dropping on them in the cliff.. *hehe*
