Pretty extraordinary ... and THANKS, dancedarlingdance, for the many photos of Ms. Ponselle! Some (or more) of us have NEVER seen them, before! The great voice is as-solid as ever, ever-expressive, and most unique. :)
@65attila This is much better than the Tetrazzini-Caruso sing-a-long since Ponselle still had a beautfiul voice. I agree it is a pity there are no studio recorded duets, unless there are one or two buried in the vaults awaiting discovery. One never knows for sure. Thanks, John, for sending, and thanks to dancedarlingdance for posting.
If they ever recorded together ir would have had to be a private recordings as until Caruso's death he was an RCA exclusive artist snd she a Columbia exclusive artist..
@CurzonRoad Oh, they wanted to, but she was talked into going with Columbia by Romano Romani who argued that she wold be the star with that label rather than one among many with Victor. Actually, Columbia's recordings were better in many ways. victors often sounded very muddy. Of course she did end up with Victor in the electric era.
first i must thanks naxos for the 1954 PONSELLE recording we can found them on CD -Ponselle sings on a Caruso recording -like you can hear Tetrazzini doing so on a video
i never said the video was a naxos cd i just thanks naxos for the 1954 last Ponselle recording that you can listen now on CD- sorry and after i say on this video ponselle sings on a Caruso record-like did Tetrazzini on a video
I've added this video to my Favorites list. Your combining the two voices was an inspired act. Ponselle WAS, indeed, one of the greatest singers of the xx century...and her Orthophonic recording of Casta Diva would be in my desert island packet! Thanks for this posting.
What a delight! I've read that their voices were beautfilly balanced in every respect in performance. This may be accounted for by the fact that Ponselle's family originated in the same area in Italy as Caruso's. This is discussed in the Mary Jane Phillips-Matz biography, Rosa Ponselle - American Diva.
He did discover her, in a sense and he was the one who insisted for her to perform with him and convinced the then manager of the old Met Opera to let Rosa perform.
This video is a true jewel. Ponselle was the greatest singer of the XX century. It's a pity she had not the opportunities that digital recording is giving to present singers. Thanks for the song and the pictures.
it is so real.

This was a private recording made in Ponselle's home. (1950's 60's?) She was singing along with Caruso's record.
Which is why it syncs so well.
I long ago heard this recording existed, but neber heard it until now. Thanks very much.

Wonderful !
Quote from Geraldine Farrar:
"There are two singers you must put aside, one is Enrico Caruso, the other is Rosa Ponselle. Then you may begin to discuss all the others!"

Also, as far as I know, Caruso discovered Rosa.
She auditioned for him when she was without opera experience (21 or 22 years old)
and she got to sing Leonora from La forza del Destino, her Met debut.
