  • I'm a Political science grad student in the Czech republic and I must say that at our school most of the professors are quite conservative actually. Especially our former dean was an ironic sarcastic right winger..and the students love him. It's funny because we had an American teacher here for one semester and he was "horrified" of how many classical liberals and libertarians were among the students.

  • @Eternaldream00 That's just a geopolitical thing. As an American, I can say that that is typical of an American adjusting to life in Europe.

  • Wait what about colleges that are private institutions? Don't they have the property rights to control what is said on their grounds?

  • @RoyalAnarchist: "Don't they [private institutions] have the property rights to control what is said on their grounds?"

If they receive one penny of federal subsidies (and almost all do in one form or another; even as mundane as books, grants, clerical assistance, etc.) then the campus cannot prohibit free speech.

“Private” does not equate authority to muzzle speech.

  • @PoliticallyBlazed

Thank you, I knew there was a libertarian answer to the question I just needed someone else to put it in words for me.

  • PCU

  • Speech codes = Thought control

  • Sadly, 'education' is in the same laughable state in England. University is such a waste of time, effort and money, especially because it is even less of a guarantee of a good, professional career now.

  • "For those tuition prices, you'd think you would at least get free speech!" - John Stossel

  • How can a college violate your right to free speech?

  • @mixmastermeeks Uh, did you watch the video?

  • @theyoungmrt yes I did. But the right to free speech as defined in the 1st amendment only applies to government. Don't get me wrong, I think the lack of free speech is horrible on college campuses. But if they are private they have that right. Don't you think?

  • @mixmastermeeks You're 100% right, in that government can't restrict your right to free speech, and that right doesn't cover private institutions. The point is, universities (including public ones, which are ubiquitous and the target of this video) are conducting these unconscionable practices. UConn is definitely a public institution, and one of the prime targets of this video. Of course, you can always argue that the First Amendment only applies to the Federal government, not the States.

  • @theyoungmrt I think it is a sad time that the institutions (although not legally required) that are suppose to have the most free speech are bound. And I think it has a lot to do with gov funding. What do you think?

  • My university doesn't even keep the "pro-life" sickos from setting up 20 foot pictures of aborted and miscarried fetusses in the plaza. If there are any speech codes, I haven't heard of them.

  • @CamillaCalamity - You're utterly indoctrinated beyond stupid. You can't even understand that Feminism IS Marxism. And in your mind being a "sicko" constitutes anyone who believes that all innocent human life is worth saving.

    You're obviously a Leftover.

  • @CamillaCalamity Im pro-life but when i see that i just shake my head. That is not how you convince people to be pro-life, you have to argue the moral and science of pro-life, not use disgusting and emotional arguments like that. It just turns people from their cause.

  • 8:26 - "America is supposed to be about liberty."

    (Sound of buzzer) Wrong!

"America" is a fiction. It is an arbitrary line on a map indicating a geographical boundary in which a small group of people enjoy the "legal" right to initiate violence. There is absolutely nothing libertarian about the institution of government, no matter how small. Check out the LarkenRose channel.

  • @furyofbongos - You're a fucking idiot.

No wonder so many Libertarians sound like Marxists.

  • @thomaserossi - you're a perfect example of someone having no argument or anything intelligent to offer resorting to slander and ad-hominem attacks.

  • Paul - Stossel from President!

  • everyone laughed at 1:33

  • Stossels last line waas priceless...

  • This isn't an American problem. Here in Canada, my student union has these lovely policies telling me what can and cannot be said. I'm a councillor there, but my student union tries to tell me that I cannot engage in free discussion on whatever I feel like and instead has a set of policies actively prohibiting any student group from engaging in such discussions. It's ridiculous how things are here. Neighbouring uOttawa had protestors shut down Ann Coulter and got the Provost to side with them.

  • i saw this documantary and it was very good.

  • Left is the new nazi

  • @omennoecile - Left is the Old Nazi and the New Nazi.

Saying Nazis were Leftists and therefore not related to Marxists or Communists is like saying Sunni are not Muslims because they oppose Shia.

  • Another great vid, LibertyPen - thanks for doing such a great job.

  • Fuuuuck, that's insane, god damn elitists.

  • With every example given, I am reminded how laughable Liberal's claims are that it is only Conservatives who are closed-minded and hypocritical.

  • @DuaneEH

Conservatives, (the more modern "Neo-conservative"-kind) and liberals are pretty much 2 sides of the same coin. Both use force (government) to impose their believes on others

Liberals tax you and give it to others as they see fit. Conservatives want to use laws to prevent you from being a hippie or force Iraqi's 10.000 miles away to become democratic.

The funamental conservative priciple of Personal Liberty accompanied with Personal Responsibility has long since floated away :-(

  • @jccusell I agree, although to explain it quicker, i personally say liberals want to regulate how society works, conservatives want to regulate people work. Either way, you get reguation.

  • @jccusell I don't necessarily agree with your examples, but I certainly can't disagree with the premise.

  • @jccusell

I agree. Big government is big government. Neocons and Democrats are virtually identical. They both want to extract money from the general public and give it to their buddies. Government is a tool to be manipulated and to manipulate the masses. Obama's pandering is off the charts. Republicans refusal to raise taxes on the hedge fund managers that caused the economic collapse in the name of "jobs" is laughable.

  • And they wonder why people call them ivory towers.

  • @lordthawkeye eeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hehehehehehe, you said towers.
