just to put you straight. the camera is a twelve times OPTICAL zoom camera not digital after 8x as you say. it goes up to 28x zoom if you use the extra digital zoom but your pictures are down sized to only 3 megapixel using just the centre of the sensor.
hey man the 780 is will deliver quality pics, cos i am using it , and HD video that is enough to quality videos with crisp sound, and the panasonic really looks ugly!, since both uses small sensors there is very less sens to think which has more quality, its a fact.
for anyone who is planning on buying a point and shoot, go check out the canon powershot sd4000. The sd4000 is about the size of the sd780, but with a 28mm F2 lens and a CMOS sensor. With a CMOS sensor you can take better low light photos. The SD4000 will outperform the any panasonic point and shoot.
What a great review - honest - I have been comparing Canon's SD90 with Panasonic Lumix TS6/7 and Nikon Coolpix. Your vid tells the story so much better. Showed it to my friend to help her make a decision - life got easier. Thank you. Susan
For corrections, the panasonic has 12x optical and 4x digital. Its not (screen) mode, its scene mode. While a Leica lens is good, you have to remember that Canon specializes in lenses. The Canon uses a AU lens. The SD780IS also shoots HD720p video. To do a review you have to compare the both products pros and cons, in this case it was only about the ZS1 that got a review.
I just picked up a ZS3 after having the TZ5 for a couple of years. Panasonic makes an excellent P&S, although I'm hearing unfortunate things about the next model, TZ7. I do see some amazing shots on Flickr done with the 780, and I recently saw a friend with the red one. Very nice. As you said, I think the 780 is the party/gathering camera and the Panny is for long distance and 'hobbyist' shots.
interesting that these were my top 2 choices for a new camera aswell. the wide angle 12x zoom won out over great style and portability for me and i bought the zs1 but still think the 780 looks so cool
yes i bought the zs1 i couldnt justify the extra $100 for the zs3 just for hd video. check out my latest video and see what you think of the quality. the previous 2 were with my old nikon 5600
Note that you are also comparing two completely different cameras. You also might want to try to use the cameras first and test its capabilities before you start a review like this.
He says that it switches to digital zoom after 8X. Wrong. It'soptical zoom all the way to 12X and digital zoom after that (if you have digital zoom selected). I had one and loved it. I took dozens of excellent action shots of my son's football games even zoomed all the way out to 12X (300mm equivalent). One thing that could be improved is the mode dial tends to get knocked off its setting rather easily. It should havemore solid click stops.
I don't notice image quality to be any better really on the Lumix VS the sd780... It has marginal advantages... However, the Lumix is bigger and like most Lumix cams over the past few years, they have that annoying wave bump on the one side... The Lumix can't shoot 720p HD video, with face detection, color b&w video.. The Lumix also costs more on average. I'd think its a good camera, but doesn't come close to the awesome sd780 overall... The lumix has the exact same design as my 2mp Lumix!! lol
Did you buy the camera bag separately or did it come with the camera?

wait, before you leave my office
You believe you cannot zoom in in video mode?
Hmm, let me think, it's in your hand, in video mode, it's on, and you're doing a review. PUSH THE RECORD BUTTON AND SEE IF IT ZOOMS!
It does, of course, zoom in video mode. Why wouldn't it anyway?

it says in two places on the front of the camera "12x optical zoom" and you say that you think it goes optical to 8x and digital after that
You're fired.

Did you purchase the ZS1 just recently because I know the ZS3 is out and is a much better upgrade compared to the ZS3.
I have the SD780 and I am loving how compact it is plus the fact that it is Canon which captures excellent quality images.

I see. You also have the SD780 as well correct? If so, how come you're not using it for your video recordings?

@blahface420 That "annoying" wave bump on the right side affords a good grip and makes this camera very comfortable to hold (IMHO).
